TL;DR 🦄
  • ⚖️ -(으)ㄴ/는지 안 -(으)ㄴ/는지 means whether or not / whether A or not A.
  • 🧠 It is an indirect-question pattern used with verbs like 알다 “to know,” 모르다 “not to know,” 확인하다 “to check,” 궁금하다 “to be curious,” and 결정하다 “to decide.”
  • 🧩 그 사람이 오는지 안 오는지 모르겠어요. [geu sa-ra-mi o-neun-ji an o-neun-ji mo-reu-ge-sseo-yo] = I’m not sure whether that person is coming or not.

🌈 The Big Picture

-(으)ㄴ/는지 안 -(으)ㄴ/는지 lets you talk about checking, knowing, wondering, deciding, or asking whether something is true or not.

It is not a direct yes/no question. It turns the question into a noun-like information chunk:
  • Direct question: 그 사람이 와요? = Is that person coming?
  • Indirect question: 그 사람이 오는지 모르겠어요. = I don’t know whether that person is coming.
  • Whether-or-not pair: 그 사람이 오는지 안 오는지 모르겠어요. = I don’t know whether that person is coming or not.

The repeated negative half makes the “or not” explicit. It is useful when you are comparing two possibilities:
  • yes/no
  • true/not true
  • going/not going
  • expensive/not expensive
  • finished/not finished

🎨 The Core “Whether or Not” Family

1. Action verb present: V-는지 안 V-는지

  • 오다 → 오는지 안 오는지 = whether someone comes/is coming or not
  • 가다 → 가는지 안 가는지 = whether someone goes/is going or not
  • 먹다 → 먹는지 안 먹는지 = whether someone eats/is eating or not
  • 듣다 → 듣는지 안 듣는지 = whether someone listens or not

2. Descriptive verb/adjective: A-(으)ㄴ지 안 A-(으)ㄴ지

  • 비싸다 → 비싼지 안 비싼지 = whether it is expensive or not
  • 좋다 → 좋은지 안 좋은지 = whether it is good or not
  • 어렵다 → 어려운지 안 어려운지 = whether it is difficult or not
  • 춥다 → 추운지 안 추운지 = whether it is cold or not

3. Past action/state: 았/었는지 안 았/었는지

  • 끝나다 → 끝났는지 안 끝났는지 = whether it ended or not
  • 먹다 → 먹었는지 안 먹었는지 = whether someone ate or not
  • 도착하다 → 도착했는지 안 도착했는지 = whether someone arrived or not

4. Noun + 인지 아닌지

For nouns, the negative half is usually 아닌지.
  • 학생인지 아닌지 = whether someone is a student or not
  • 진짜인지 아닌지 = whether it is real or not
  • 문제인지 아닌지 = whether it is a problem or not

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 오는지 아니 오는지 → ✅ 오는지 안 오는지.
  • 비싼는지 안 비싼는지 → ✅ 비싼지 안 비싼지.
  • 학생인지 안 학생인지 → ✅ 학생인지 아닌지.
  • 갔는지 안 가는지 if both sides mean past → ✅ 갔는지 안 갔는지.
  • ⚠️ If the negative half is obvious, Korean may use only -(으)ㄴ/는지. The full paired form emphasizes both possibilities.

⚖️ Bottom line: -(으)ㄴ/는지 안 -(으)ㄴ/는지 is your “whether or not” scanner: it checks two possibilities and plugs them into a bigger sentence.
