TL;DR 🦄
- ❓ Use -냐고 하다 [-nya-go ha-da] to report a question: “asked whether/if…” or “asked what/where/why…”
- 🧩 For many everyday learner sentences, attach it after the question form: 어디예요? [eo-di-ye-yo] “Where is it?” → 어디냐고 했어요 [eo-di-nya-go hae-sseo-yo] “asked where it was.”
- 🚦 Do not use -다고 하다, -(으)라고 하다, or -자고 하다 for questions. Questions get the question-quote lane: -냐고 하다.
🎧 Iru Helper Note — If a reported question feels twisty in your mouth, open Korean Helper Widgets and listen to the sentence a few times. Your ears are basically the grammar GPS. 🧭
🌈 The Big Picture
-냐고 하다 [-nya-go ha-da] is the indirect-quote pattern for questions. It lets you report what someone asked without repeating the original question exactly. 🕵️
Direct question:
- 지금 바빠요? [ji-geum ba-ppa-yo] — Are you busy now? 🗓️
Reported question:
- 민수가 지금 바쁘냐고 했어요. [min-su-ga ji-geum ba-ppeu-nya-go hae-sseo-yo] — Minsu asked whether I was busy now. 🗓️
Think of 냐고 as the little flag that says, “Hey, the thing being reported was a question.” 🚩
🎨 The Core -냐고 하다 Family
The learner-friendly core pattern is:
- question content + 냐고 하다 = to ask whether/what/where/why/how…
Useful forms:
- -냐고 해요 [-nya-go hae-yo] — asks…
- -냐고 했어요 [-nya-go hae-sseo-yo] — asked…
- -냬요 [-nyae-yo] — short spoken form of -냐고 해요, like “they’re asking whether…”
Common shape by question type:
- Yes/no question: 지금 바빠요? [ji-geum ba-ppa-yo] “Are you busy now?” → 지금 바쁘냐고 했어요 [ji-geum ba-ppeu-nya-go hae-sseo-yo] “asked whether I was busy now.”
- Question-word question: 어디예요? [eo-di-ye-yo] “Where is it?” → 어디냐고 했어요 [eo-di-nya-go hae-sseo-yo] “asked where it was.”
- Noun question: 학생이에요? [hak-saeng-i-e-yo] “Are you a student?” → 학생이냐고 했어요 [hak-saeng-i-nya-go hae-sseo-yo] “asked whether I was a student.”
🛠️ How It Works in a Sentence
- 친구가 이름이 뭐냐고 했어요. [chin-gu-ga i-reu-mi mwo-nya-go hae-sseo-yo] — My friend asked what my name was. 🪪
- 친구 = friend, 이름 = name, 이 = subject marker, 뭐 = what.
- 선생님이 숙제가 어렵냐고 해요. [seon-saeng-nim-i suk-je-ga eo-ryeop-nya-go hae-yo] — The teacher asks whether the homework is difficult. ✏️
- 선생님 = teacher, 숙제 = homework, 어렵다 = to be difficult.
- 지우가 내일 만나냐고 했어요. [ji-u-ga nae-il man-na-nya-go hae-sseo-yo] — Jiu asked whether we meet tomorrow. 👋
- 지우 = Jiu, 내일 = tomorrow, 만나다 = to meet.
🧩 General Formation Rule
For this beginner lesson, keep the practical rule simple:
- If you are reporting a question, use -냐고 하다.
- With nouns, use 이냐고 after a consonant-ending noun and 냐고 after a vowel-ending noun.
- 학생 [hak-saeng] “student” → 학생이냐고 했어요 [hak-saeng-i-nya-go hae-sseo-yo] — asked whether I was a student. 🎒
- 의사 [ui-sa] “doctor” → 의사냐고 했어요 [ui-sa-nya-go hae-sseo-yo] — asked whether I was a doctor. 🩺
- With past-tense questions, keep the past marker before 냐고.
- 먹었어요? [meo-geo-sseo-yo] “Did you eat?” → 먹었냐고 했어요 [meo-geon-nya-go hae-sseo-yo] — asked whether I ate. 🍚
📚 Cross-check note
The question-quotation use of -냐고 하다, noun form (이)냐고, and past question form -았/었냐고 were checked against korean.go.kr and standard Korean grammar references. ✅
🪞 Synonym Alert
- -냐고 하다 [-nya-go ha-da] — neutral reported-question pattern.
- -냬요 [-nyae-yo] — short spoken form of -냐고 해요. Friendly and common in conversation. 🗨️
- 묻다 [mut-da] — “to ask.” More vocabulary-like; it can appear with reported questions, as in 뭐냐고 물었어요 [mwo-nya-go mu-reo-sseo-yo] — “asked what it was.” ❓
⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
- ❌ 뭐다고 했어요 → ✅ 뭐냐고 했어요. Questions need 냐고, not 다고. ❓
- ❌ 학생냐고 했어요 → ✅ 학생이냐고 했어요. Consonant-ending nouns need 이냐고. 🎒
- ❌ 먹냐고 했어요 for “Did you eat?” → ✅ 먹었냐고 했어요. Keep the past marker when the original question is past tense. 🍚
- ❌ 가라고 했어요 for “asked whether I was going” → ✅ 가냐고 했어요. 가라고 reports a command: “told me to go.” 🚦
- ❌ Treating -냬요 as formal writing → ✅ Use -냐고 해요 when you want the full, clear form. 📝
🎉 Now you can report questions without sounding like you’re reporting statements, commands, or group plans. Grammar traffic lights: obeyed. 🚦✨
