상황 means situation, circumstance, or state of affairs.
 
When Korean places a noun-modifying clause before 상황, it creates a phrase like:
  • the situation where A happens
  • the situation in which A is true
  • the situation of being A
  • the circumstances where A applies

  • 비가 오는 상황에서는 천천히 운전해야 해요.

Compared with 경우 “case,” 상황 often feels more concrete and real-world. It focuses on the overall circumstances, not just the logical condition.
 

🎨 The Core “Situation Where” Family

1. Action verb, present/general + 는 상황

Use this for an action/event that is happening, repeated, or generally possible.
  • 비가 오다 → 비가 오는 상황 = a situation where it is raining
  • 사람들이 기다리다 → 사람들이 기다리는 상황 = a situation where people are waiting
  • 문제가 생기다 → 문제가 생기는 상황 = a situation where a problem occurs
  • 연락이 안 되다 → 연락이 안 되는 상황 = a situation where contact is not possible
 

2. Action verb, past/completed + -(으)ㄴ 상황

Use this when the situation is the result of something that already happened.
  • 문제가 생기다 → 문제가 생긴 상황 = a situation where a problem has occurred
  • 회의가 취소되다 → 회의가 취소된 상황 = a situation where the meeting has been canceled
  • 길이 막히다 → 길이 막힌 상황 = a situation where the road is blocked
  • 준비가 끝나다 → 준비가 끝난 상황 = a situation where preparation is finished
 

3. Descriptive verb/adjective + -(으)ㄴ 상황

Use this when the situation has a certain state or quality.
  • 어렵다 → 어려운 상황 = a difficult situation
  • 위험하다 → 위험한 상황 = a dangerous situation
  • 복잡하다 → 복잡한 상황 = a complicated situation
  • 시간이 부족하다 → 시간이 부족한 상황 = a situation where time is insufficient
 

4. Noun + 인 상황

Use this when the situation is identified as a noun/category.
  • 비상 상황 → 비상 상황인 상황 = a situation that is an emergency situation (grammatical but repetitive)
  • 문제 → 문제인 상황 = a situation where something is a problem
  • 첫 회의 → 첫 회의인 상황 = a situation where it is the first meeting

When the noun already contains 상황, avoid repeating it.
 
  • Awkward: 비상 상황인 상황
  • Natural: 비상 상황 / 비상 상황에서는
 
But for other nouns, N인 상황 is useful: 문제인 상황, 처음인 상황, 회의 중인 상황.

1. Situation + 에서 = in a situation where...

  • 모두가 기다리는 상황에서 혼자 먼저 갈 수는 없어요.

2. Situation + 을/를 설명하다 = explain the situation

3. Situation + 이라서 = because it is a situation where...

4. Situation + 이 아니다 = it is not a situation where...

  • 지금은 농담할 상황이 아니에요.

Build a noun-modifying clause before 상황.
 

Action verbs — present/general → 는 상황

  • 오다 → 오는 상황
  • 기다리다 → 기다리는 상황
  • 연락하다 → 연락하는 상황
  • 도움이 필요하다 → 도움이 필요한 상황 (필요하다 is descriptive, so 필요한)
 

Action verbs — completed/past → -(으)ㄴ 상황

  • 생기다 → 생긴 상황
  • 끝나다 → 끝난 상황
  • 취소되다 → 취소된 상황
  • 막히다 → 막힌 상황
 

Descriptive verbs/adjectives → -(으)ㄴ 상황

  • 어렵다 → 어려운 상황
  • 복잡하다 → 복잡한 상황
  • 위험하다 → 위험한 상황
  • 부족하다 → 부족한 상황
 

Nouns → 인 상황

  • 문제 → 문제인 상황

🚨 Exception Rule(s)

  • ㅂ-irregular adjectives change before -(으)ㄴ:
    • 어렵다 → 어려운 상황
    • 춥다 → 추운 상황
    • 무겁다 → 무거운 상황
  • ㄹ-ending adjectives drop ㄹ before ㄴ:
    • 멀다 → 먼 상황
    • 길다 → 긴 상황
  • Action verbs use 는 상황 for present/general situations:

    • ❌ 비가 온 상황 if you mean “a situation where it is raining now/generally”
  • Past/completed actions use -(으)ㄴ 상황:

  • ⚠️ Do not translate every English “situation” as 상황. Sometimes 경우, 상태, or a simple -는데 sentence is more natural.
