TL;DR 🦄
  • -(으)ㄴ/는 사실 means “the fact that…” and turns a whole clause into a clearly stated fact.
  • Use it when you want to confirm, admit, reveal, emphasize, or react to a fact: 늦은 사실 “the fact that someone was late,” 어렵다는 사실 “the fact that it is difficult.”
  • It overlaps with -는 것, but 사실 sounds more explicit, factual, and sometimes heavier: “the fact itself.”

to hear the rhythm of 제가 실수했다는 사실, 그 사람이 온다는 사실, 문제가 없다는 사실, and 한국어가 어렵다는 사실. The key sound is often -다는 사실 after a full quoted-style clause.

🌈 The Big Picture

사실 means fact. When Korean puts a clause before 사실, it creates a noun phrase like:
  • “the fact that someone did something”
  • “the fact that something is true”
  • “the fact that a situation exists”
  • “the fact itself”

This pattern is useful when the truth of the clause matters.

Compare:
  • 그 사람이 왔어요.
    • [geu sa-ra-mi wa-sseo-yo]
      That person came.
  • 그 사람이 왔다는 사실을 몰랐어요.
    • [geu sa-ra-mi wat-da-neun sa-si-reul mol-la-sseo-yo]
I didn’t know the fact that that person came.

The second sentence is not just reporting “they came.” It makes the fact that they came the object of knowing, admitting, revealing, forgetting, confirming, or emphasizing.

You will see it often with verbs like:
  • 알다 — to know
  • 모르다 — to not know
  • 인정하다 — to admit
  • 깨닫다 — to realize
  • 확인하다 — to confirm
  • 밝히다 — to reveal
  • 잊다 — to forget

🎨 Formation Rules

There are two common ways learners meet this pattern.

1. Action verb present: V-는 사실

Use this when the action is present, repeated, habitual, or future-like depending on context.
  • 오다오는 사실
    • the fact that someone comes / is coming
  • 공부하다공부하는 사실
    • the fact that someone studies

However, in many natural sentences, Korean often uses the quote-style form -다는 사실 instead:
  • 그 사람이 온다는 사실을 알았어요.
    • I knew the fact that that person was coming.
  • 민수가 매일 공부한다는 사실이 놀라워요.
    • The fact that Minsu studies every day is surprising.

2. Action verb past: V-(으)ㄴ 사실 or V-았/었다는 사실

Use this for completed actions.
  • 가다간 사실 / 갔다는 사실
    • the fact that someone went
  • 먹다먹은 사실 / 먹었다는 사실
    • the fact that someone ate
  • 만들다만든 사실 / 만들었다는 사실
    • the fact that someone made it

3. Descriptive verb/adjective: A-(으)ㄴ 사실 or A-다는 사실

For adjectives and descriptive verbs, use the adjective modifier or quote-style form.
  • 어렵다어려운 사실 / 어렵다는 사실
    • the fact that it is difficult
  • 중요하다중요한 사실 / 중요하다는 사실
    • the fact that it is important
  • 없다없는 사실 / 없다는 사실
    • the fact that there is none / it does not exist
💡
Learner shortcut
In real intermediate Korean, -다는 사실 is extremely useful because it clearly marks a whole clause as “the fact that…”

  • 그가 왔다는 사실 = the fact that they came
  • 비가 온다는 사실 = the fact that it rains / will rain
  • 문제가 없다는 사실 = the fact that there is no problem

🛠️ How It Works in Real Sentences

1. Knowing or not knowing a fact

  • 저는 그 사실을 몰랐어요.

As a result of the investigation, the fact that there was no problem was confirmed.

🔍 Nuance: 사실 vs vs -(으)ㅁ

-는 것 = the thing/action/fact of doing

This is broad, conversational, and flexible.
  • 한국어를 공부하는 것은 중요해요.
    • Studying Korean is important.

-(으)ㄴ/는 사실 = the fact that...

This sounds more explicit. It highlights the truth or reality of the statement.
  • 한국어를 공부하는 사실이 중요해요.
    • The fact that someone studies Korean is important.
More “fact-focused,” less like a general activity.
  • 한국어 발음이 중요하다는 사실을 알았어요.
    • I learned the fact that Korean pronunciation is important.

-(으)ㅁ = formal written fact

This is compact and official.
  • 문제가 없음을 확인했습니다.
    • I confirmed that there is no problem.

Quick decision box

  • Daily “doing something is…” → -는 것
  • Emphasize a truth/fact → -(으)ㄴ/는 사실 or -다는 사실

4. 중요한 사실은 ...다는 것이다

This is a common explanatory structure.
  • 중요한 사실은 우리가 아직 시간이 있다는 거예요.
    • The important fact is that we still have time.
  • 가장 큰 문제는 아무도 그 사실을 몰랐다는 거예요.
    • The biggest problem is that nobody knew that fact.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 그 사람이 오다 사실 → ✅ 그 사람이 온다는 사실 / 그 사람이 오는 사실
    • Use a proper modifier or quote-style form before 사실.
  • 어렵는 사실 → ✅ 어렵다는 사실 / 어려운 사실
    • Adjectives do not use -는 this way.
  • ❌ Treating 사실 as always “actually” → ✅ 사실 can mean “fact,” while 사실은 often means “actually / to tell the truth.”
  • ❌ Overusing 사실 for simple daily actions → ✅ Use -는 것 for ordinary “doing…” sentences.
  • ❌ Forgetting particles → ✅ 사실이, 사실은, 사실을 depend on the sentence role.

Bottom line: -(으)ㄴ/는 사실 and especially -다는 사실 let you package a whole statement as a clear fact. Use it when the truth itself matters: knowing it, admitting it, confirming it, revealing it, or being surprised by it. 📌✨

  • Pick the particle after 사실 based on sentence role: 사실이, 사실을, 사실은.

🎉 Fact-packaging unlocked. With -다는 사실, you can sound more precise when you know, admit, confirm, reveal, or react to the truth of a whole statement. 📌✨
