TL;DR 🦄
- -(ㄴ/는)다 style is a plain written declarative style used in diaries, essays, reports, explanations, news-like writing, summaries, and textbook-style descriptions.
- Action verbs usually use -ㄴ다/는다: 가다 → 간다, 먹다 → 먹는다. Descriptive verbs/adjectives usually keep dictionary-style -다: 크다 → 크다, 좋다 → 좋다.
- It is not polite conversation style. Use it mainly for writing, narration, general truths, diary entries, observations, or concise explanatory prose.

🌈 The Big Picture
Korean has a special “plain style” often used in writing. In this lesson, we focus on the declarative written style commonly called -(ㄴ/는)다 style.
Think of it as Korean’s written narrator voice:
- diary: 오늘은 비가 온다. — It rains today. 🌧️
- report/summary: 이 자료는 중요한 정보를 제공한다. — This material provides important information. 📄
- general truth: 시간은 빠르게 흐른다. — Time passes quickly. ⏳
- description: 서울은 사람이 많다. — Seoul has many people. 🏙️
It is plain, direct, and written. It does not sound like everyday polite conversation.
Compare:
- 저는 학교에 가요. — I go to school. (polite conversation)
- 저는 학교에 갑니다. — I go to school. (formal polite/business)
- 나는 학교에 간다. — I go to school. (plain written/narrative)
🎨 The Core Written-Style Family
1. Action verbs: -ㄴ다/는다
Use -ㄴ다 after vowel-ending stems and ㄹ-ending stems. Use -는다 after most consonant-ending stems.
- 가다 → 간다 — go/goes
- 오다 → 온다 — come/comes
- 보다 → 본다 — see/watch
- 먹다 → 먹는다 — eat/eats
- 읽다 → 읽는다 — read/reads
- 살다 → 산다 — live/lives
2. Descriptive verbs/adjectives: plain -다
For descriptive verbs/adjectives, the written declarative form usually looks like the dictionary form.
- 좋다 → 좋다 — is good
- 크다 → 크다 — is big
- 많다 → 많다 — is many/much
- 어렵다 → 어렵다 — is difficult
- 바쁘다 → 바쁘다 — is busy
3. 이다 and 아니다
Nouns commonly use 이다; negative noun statements use 아니다.
- 그는 학생이다. — They are a student.
- 이것은 문제이다. — This is a problem.
- 이것은 정답이 아니다. — This is not the correct answer.
4. Past tense: -았다/었다/했다
Past written style uses the plain past ending.
- 가다 → 갔다 — went
- 먹다 → 먹었다 — ate
- 공부하다 → 공부했다 — studied
- 좋다 → 좋았다 — was good
5. Future/guess: -(으)ㄹ 것이다
Written future or prediction often uses -(으)ㄹ 것이다.
- 내일 비가 올 것이다. — It will rain tomorrow.
- 문제가 더 커질 것이다. — The problem will become bigger.
- 결과가 곧 나올 것이다. — The result will come out soon.
🛠️ How It Works in Written Sentences
- 사람들은 매일 스마트폰을 사용한다.
[sa-ram-deu-reun mae-il seu-ma-teu-po-neul sa-yong-han-da] — People use smartphones every day. 📱
- 이 글은 한국어 문어체를 설명한다.
[i geu-reun han-gu-geo mu-neo-che-reul seol-myeong-han-da] — This writing explains Korean written style. ✍️
- 오늘 날씨는 맑다.
[o-neul nal-ssi-neun mak-tta] — Today’s weather is clear. ☀️
- 그 학생은 어제 도서관에 갔다.
[geu hak-saeng-eun eo-je do-seo-gwa-ne gat-tta] — The student went to the library yesterday. 📚
- 노력은 좋은 결과를 만든다.
[no-ryeo-geun jo-eun gyeol-gwa-reul man-deun-da] — Effort creates good results. 🌱
Notice the feeling: these sentences sound like narration, essays, records, or explanations — not like chatting with a cashier.

🧭 When to Use -(ㄴ/는)다 Style
Use it for:
- diary entries and personal records 📓
- essays and TOPIK-style writing ✍️
- news/report-style summaries 📰
- textbook explanations 📘
- narration and storytelling 📖
- general truths and observations 🔍
- concise bullet-point descriptions in formal notes 📌
Avoid it for:
- polite daily conversation with strangers
- customer-service requests
- direct emails where the reader expects polite endings
- talking to teachers, clients, elders, or bosses in real time
In conversation, 간다 can sound casual, blunt, or like self-talk depending on context. In writing, it can sound clean and standard.

- dictionary: 먹다 — to eat
- written sentence: 아이가 밥을 먹는다. — The child eats rice.
Modifier forms -(으)ㄴ/는 N
Do not confuse final written endings with noun-modifying endings.
- final: 아이가 밥을 먹는다. — The child eats rice.
- modifier: 밥을 먹는 아이 — the child who eats rice

- Speaking politely? 먹어요 / 가요 / 좋아요 / 학생이에요.
- Speaking formally? 먹습니다 / 갑니다 / 좋습니다 / 학생입니다.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
- ❌ 먹다 as a present written sentence for “eats” → ✅ 먹는다. Action verbs need -ㄴ다/는다.
- ❌ 좋는다 → ✅ 좋다. Descriptive verbs/adjectives usually keep -다.
- ❌ 살는다 → ✅ 산다. ㄹ-stems drop ㄹ before ㄴ다.
- ❌ 공부하다 as “studies” in plain writing → ✅ 공부한다. Action 하다 verbs become 한다.
- ❌ Using 간다 to politely tell a stranger “I’m going” → ✅ use 가요 or 갑니다.
- ❌ Confusing final 먹는다 with modifier 먹는 → ✅ final sentence needs 다.
You now have the written narrator voice: 간다, 먹는다, 좋다, 학생이다, 갔다. This is how Korean can sound clear, direct, and essay-ready without sounding like a polite conversation. ✍️✨
