1. Define an abstract noun

🧩 Formation Rules

1. Noun ending in consonant + 이란

  • 행복 → 행복이란
  • 책임 → 책임이란
  • 교육 → 교육이란
  • 환경 보호 → 환경 보호란 is also common in writing because the full phrase ends in a vowel sound or is treated as a term.
 

2. Noun ending in vowel + 란

  • 문화 → 문화란
  • 자유 → 자유란
  • 기회 → 기회란
 

3. Definition part + 것을 말한다

The definition can be a noun phrase or a verb phrase turned into a noun with -는 것.
 
Noun phrase definition
  • 행복이란 마음이 편안한 상태를 말한다.
      • Happiness means a peaceful state of mind.
 
Verb phrase definition
  • 환경 보호란 자연을 지키는 것을 말한다.
      • Environmental protection means protecting nature.
 

4. Written style ending

This pattern often ends in 말한다, not 말해요, because it belongs to explanatory written style.
