and listen to contrast chunks like 서울과 달리, 예상과 달리, 작년과 달리, and 친구와 달리. Listen for the comparison rhythm: “unlike A → B is different.” 🎧

🌈 The Big Picture

달리 comes from 다르다, meaning to be different.
-와/과 달리 points to one thing and says the next thing is different from it.

It says:

“Unlike A, B is different.”

Examples:
  • 예상과 달리 시험이 쉬웠어요.
    • [ye-sang-gwa dal-li si-heo-mi swi-wo-sseo-yo]
Unlike what I expected, the test was easy. 📝
  • 작년과 달리 올해는 눈이 많이 와요.
    • [jang-nyeon-gwa dal-li ol-hae-neun nu-ni ma-ni wa-yo]
Unlike last year, it is snowing a lot this year. ❄️
  • 친구와 달리 저는 매운 음식을 잘 못 먹어요.
    • [chin-gu-wa dal-li jeo-neun mae-un eum-si-geul jal mot meo-geo-yo]
Unlike my friend, I can’t eat spicy food well. 🌶️

Use this grammar when the first noun is a comparison point:
  • person: 친구와 달리 = unlike my friend
  • place: 서울과 달리 = unlike Seoul
  • time: 작년과 달리 = unlike last year
  • expectation/plan: 예상과 달리, 계획과 달리
  • previous statement: 이와 달리 = unlike this / in contrast to this

🎨 The Core “Unlike” Family

1. Vowel-ending noun + 와 달리

Use after a noun ending in a vowel.
  • 친구 → 친구와 달리 = unlike my friend
  • 학교 → 학교와 달리 = unlike school
  • 어제 → 어제와 달리 = unlike yesterday
  • 계획 → 계획과 달리 because 계획 ends in a consonant

2. Consonant-ending noun + 과 달리

Use after a noun ending in a consonant.
  • 서울 → 서울과 달리 = unlike Seoul
  • 작년 → 작년과 달리 = unlike last year
  • 예상 → 예상과 달리 = contrary to expectations
  • 설명 → 설명과 달리 = unlike the explanation

3. Common fixed chunks

  • 예상과 달리 = unlike expectations / contrary to expectations
  • 계획과 달리 = unlike the plan / contrary to the plan
  • 평소와 달리 = unlike usual
  • 보기와 달리 = unlike how it looks
  • 생각과 달리 = unlike what someone thought
  • 이와 달리 = unlike this / in contrast to this

🛠️ How It Works in Sentences

1. Expectations
  • 예상과 달리 결과가 좋았어요.
    • [ye-sang-gwa dal-li gyeol-gwa-ga jo-a-sseo-yo]
Unlike expectations, the result was good.
예상 = expectation, 결과 = result.

2. People
  • 언니와 달리 저는 아침형 인간이에요.
    • [eon-ni-wa dal-li jeo-neun a-chim-hyeong in-ga-ni-e-yo]
Unlike my older sister, I’m a morning person. 🌅

3. Places
  • 서울과 달리 이 동네는 조용하고 한적해요.
    • [seo-ul-gwa dal-li i dong-ne-neun jo-yong-ha-go han-jeo-kae-yo]
Unlike Seoul, this neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. 🏘️

4. Usual pattern
  • 평소와 달리 오늘은 사람이 별로 없어요.
    • [pyeong-so-wa dal-li o-neu-reun sa-ra-mi byeol-lo eop-seo-yo]
Unlike usual, there aren’t many people today. 👥

🧩 General Formation Rule

Nouns → N와/과 달리

  • vowel-ending noun → 와 달리
    • 친구와 달리
    • 어제와 달리
    • 학교와 달리
  • consonant-ending noun → 과 달리
    • 서울과 달리
    • 작년과 달리
    • 예상과 달리

Clause-like ideas

If you want to compare with a whole situation or idea, Korean often turns it into a noun-like phrase:
  • 생각한 것과 달리 = unlike what I thought
  • 들은 것과 달리 = unlike what I heard
  • 본 것과 달리 = unlike what I saw
  • 기대한 것과 달리 = unlike what I expected

Examples:
  • 제가 생각한 것과 달리 일이 빨리 끝났어요.
    • Unlike what I thought, the work ended quickly.
  • 들은 것과 달리 그 식당은 별로 비싸지 않았어요.
    • Unlike what I heard, that restaurant wasn’t very expensive.

Related word: 다르다

Use 다르다 when you simply say “A is different from B.”
  • 제 생각은 친구 생각과 달라요. = My idea is different from my friend’s idea.
  • 작년과 올해는 달라요. = Last year and this year are different.

Use -와/과 달리 when you want to start a contrast sentence:
  • 작년과 달리 올해는 바빠요. = Unlike last year, this year is busy.

🚨 Exception Rule(s)

  • Choose / by the final sound of the noun:
    • 친구와 달리
    • 서울과 달리
  • Do not use 에 달리 for “unlike”:
    • 서울에 달리
    • 서울과 달리
  • Do not attach it directly to a plain verb dictionary form:
    • 생각하다와 달리
    • 생각한 것과 달리
  • 달리 already contains the “different” idea, so don’t translate it as “different from differently” in English. It usually becomes unlike / contrary to / differently from.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 서울와 달리 → ✅ 서울과 달리.
  • 친구과 달리 → ✅ 친구와 달리.
  • 생각하다와 달리 → ✅ 생각한 것과 달리.
  • ❌ Using 달리 for simple “but” when there is no reference point → ✅ use 지만.
  • ⚠️ -와/과 달리 usually needs a clear thing being compared: unlike Seoul, unlike last year, unlike what I expected.

🆚 Bottom line: -와/과 달리 is your “unlike A…” tool. First name the reference point, then explain what is different.
