and listen to 맛있지만 비싸요, 가지만 공부하지 않아요, and 작지만 좋아요.

🌈 The Big Picture

The connector 지만 lets you connect two ideas that push against each other. It is similar to but, however, or although in English.

Use it when you want to say:
  • one good thing + one downside: 맛있지만 비싸요 = It is delicious, but expensive.
  • one action + a surprising second action: 학교에 가지만 공부하지 않아요 = I go to school, but I do not study.
  • one description + a contrasting description: 작지만 좋아요 = It is small, but good.

The first part sets up an idea. The second part gives the contrast.

🧩 Core Pattern

Start with the dictionary form, remove , then add 지만.

  • 좋다 → stem 좋지만
  • 작다 → stem 작지만
  • 크다 → stem 크지만
  • 비싸다 → stem 비싸비싸지만
  • 먹다 → stem 먹지만
  • 가다 → stem 가지만
  • 공부하다 → stem 공부하공부하지만

🛠️ How to Build 지만 Sentences

  1. Choose the first action or description: 맛있다, 가다, 읽다.
  1. Remove to get the stem: 맛있, , .
  1. Add 지만: 맛있지만, 가지만, 읽지만.
  1. Add a second idea that contrasts:
      • 커피가 맛있지만 비싸요. = The coffee is delicious, but expensive.
      • 학교에 가지만 공부하지 않아요. = I go to school, but I do not study.
      • 책을 읽지만 재미없어요. = I read the book, but it is not interesting.

🔍 Actions vs Descriptions

지만 can attach to both action verbs and descriptive verbs.

Action verbs
  • 먹지만 안 마셔요 = I eat, but I do not drink.
  • 가지만 공부하지 않아요 = I go, but I do not study.
  • 읽지만 이해하지 않아요 = I read, but I do not understand.

Descriptions
  • 맛있지만 비싸요 = delicious, but expensive
  • 작지만 좋아요 = small, but good
  • 재미있지만 길어요 = fun, but long

⚖️ What Counts as Contrast?

A good 지만 sentence usually has two ideas that feel different from each other.

Strong contrast:
  • 싸지만 맛없어요. = It is cheap, but not delicious.
  • 비싸지만 좋아요. = It is expensive, but good.

Weak contrast:
  • 맛있지만 맛있어요. = It is delicious, but delicious. ❌

The second half should add a real twist, limitation, downside, or surprise.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 좋아요지만 → ✅ 좋지만
  • 먹어요지만 → ✅ 먹지만
  • 맛있지만 맛있어요 → ✅ use a real contrast like 맛있지만 비싸요.
  • ❌ Using 지만 for simple “and” → ✅ use it for but / however / although.
  • ❌ Ending after 지만 with no second idea → ✅ add the contrasting follow-up.
