리 is a dependent noun that means something like reason, possibility, or likelihood in this pattern.

Verb/adjective + -(으)ㄹ 리가 없다
= “There is no reason/possibility that...”

Use it when something sounds impossible or unbelievable.

      There is no way it already ended.

2. Strong trust: “They would never...”

Use it when you trust someone or know their habits.

      There is no way Suji would forget the promise.
  • 선생님이 틀릴 리가 없어요.

3. Logical impossibility: “That cannot be the case”

Use it when the facts do not support the idea.
  • 문이 잠겨 있는데 누가 들어왔을 리가 없어요.

      The door was locked, so there is no way someone came in.

🧩 Formation Rules

Use the future/adnominal modifier -(으)ㄹ before 리가 없다.
 

Vowel stem + ㄹ 리가 없다

  • 가다 → 갈 리가 없다 — there is no way someone would go
  • 보다 → 볼 리가 없다 — there is no way someone would see/watch
  • 비싸다 → 비쌀 리가 없다 — there is no way it is expensive
  • 하다 → 할 리가 없다 — there is no way someone would do it
 

Consonant stem + 을 리가 없다

  • 먹다 → 먹을 리가 없다 — there is no way someone would eat
  • 읽다 → 읽을 리가 없다 — there is no way someone would read
  • 늦다 → 늦을 리가 없다 — there is no way someone would be late
  • 없다 → 없을 리가 없다 — there is no way there is none
 

ㄹ stem + 리가 없다

For stems ending in ㄹ, keep the ㄹ and add 리가 없다.

Past: -았/었을 리가 없다

Use this when you strongly deny that something happened.
  • 갔을 리가 없어요. — There is no way they went.

Use 일 after nouns.
