• “I was going to do A, but then B.”

• “I intended to do A, but changed/stopped.”

• 옷을 사려다가 너무 비싸서 안 샀어요.
[o-seul sa-ryeo-da-ga neo-mu bi-ssa-seo an sa-sseo-yo] — I was going to buy clothes, but they were too expensive, so I didn’t. 👕
옷 = clothing; 사다 = to buy; 비싸다 = to be expensive.

• 밥을 먹으려다가 전화가 와서 나갔어요.
[ba-beul meo-geu-ryeo-da-ga jeon-hwa-ga wa-seo na-ga-sseo-yo] — I was going to eat, but a call came, so I went out. 🍚📞
밥을 먹다 = to eat a meal; 전화가 오다 = for a call to come.

• 친구에게 전화하려다가 그냥 메시지를 보냈어요.
[chin-gu-e-ge jeon-hwa-ha-ryeo-da-ga geu-nyang me-si-ji-reul bo-nae-sseo-yo] — I was going to call my friend, but just sent a message instead. 💬
그냥 = just; 보내다 = to send.

🎨 The Core -(으)려다가 Family

1. Vowel stem + 려다가

• 가다 [ga-da] — to go → 가려다가 [ga-ryeo-da-ga] — was going to go, but...

• 사다 [sa-da] — to buy → 사려다가 — was going to buy, but...

• 보다 [bo-da] — to see/watch → 보려다가 — was going to watch/see, but...

• 전화하다 [jeon-hwa-ha-da] — to call → 전화하려다가 — was going to call, but...

2. Consonant stem + 으려다가

• 먹다 [meok-da] — to eat → 먹으려다가 [meo-geu-ryeo-da-ga] — was going to eat, but...

• 읽다 [ik-da] — to read → 읽으려다가 — was going to read, but...

• 찾다 [chat-da] — to look for/find → 찾으려다가 — was going to look for, but...

3. ㄹ-ending verbs: keep ㄹ + 려다가

🛠️ How It Works in a Sentence

• 카페에 가려다가 비가 와서 집에 있었어요.
[ka-pe-e ga-ryeo-da-ga bi-ga wa-seo ji-be i-sseo-sseo-yo] — I was going to go to a cafe, but it rained, so I stayed home. ☔
카페 = cafe; 비가 오다 = to rain; 집에 있다 = to stay/be at home.

• 책을 읽으려다가 너무 피곤해서 잤어요.
[chae-geul il-geu-ryeo-da-ga neo-mu pi-gon-hae-seo ja-sseo-yo] — I was going to read a book, but I was too tired, so I slept. 📖😴
피곤하다 = to be tired; 자다 = to sleep.

• 문을 열려다가 손님이 아니라서 안 열었어요.
[mu-neul yeol-lyeo-da-ga son-ni-mi a-ni-ra-seo an yeo-reo-sseo-yo] — I was going to open the door, but it wasn’t a guest, so I didn’t open it. 🚪
문 = door; 손님 = guest/customer.

Useful sentence patterns

🚨 Nuance: Intention + Change

• 공부하다가 잤어요.
[gong-bu-ha-da-ga ja-sseo-yo] — I was studying and then slept. / I fell asleep while studying.

• 공부하려다가 잤어요.
[gong-bu-ha-ryeo-da-ga ja-sseo-yo] — I was going to study, but ended up sleeping.

-(으)려다가

• 사려다가 안 샀어요. — I was going to buy it, but I didn’t.

-(으)려고 하다

• 사려고 해요. — I’m planning to buy it.

-(으)려던 참이다

• 사려던 참이었어요. — I was just about to buy it.

-다가

• 사다가 친구를 만났어요. — While buying/on the way buying, I met a friend. (context dependent)

-(으)ㄹ까 하다

• 살까 해요. — I’m thinking of buying it.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

• ❌ 먹려다가 → ✅ 먹으려다가 (consonant stem + 으려다가).

• ❌ 할려다가 → ✅ 하려다가 (standard 하다 form is 하려다가).
