-다가 connects two events when the first action is in progress, then something else happens.
Think of it as:
“while doing X, Y happened”
“I was doing X and then changed to Y”
“in the middle of X, Y happened”
“X was interrupted by Y”

The first action usually does not finish normally before the second action appears.

🧠 Core Meanings

1. Interruption: “while doing… something happened”

Use it when something happens in the middle of an action.
  • 책을 읽다가 잠이 들었어요.

      I fell asleep while reading a book. 📖
  • 요리하다가 손을 데었어요.

2. Change of action: “was doing… then switched”

Use it when the first action stops and another action begins.
  • 공부하다가 영화를 봤어요.

      I was studying and then watched a movie. 🎬
  • 청소하다가 쉬었어요.

3. Chance event: “while going/doing, I happened to…”

Use it when something unexpected happens during an activity.
  • 집에 가다가 민수 씨를 봤어요.
      • [ji-be ga-da-ga min-su ssi-reul bwa-sseo-yo]
      I saw Minsu on my way home. 🏠
  • 시장에 가다가 비가 왔어요.

4. Cause from an ongoing action

Sometimes the first action creates the situation for the second event.
  • 뛰어가다가 넘어졌어요.
      • [ttwi-eo-ga-da-ga neo-meo-jyeo-sseo-yo]
      I fell while running. 🏃
  • 말하다가 실수했어요.
      • [ma-ra-da-ga sil-su-hae-sseo-yo]

Feeling
-다가 often has a “something changed/happened in the middle” feeling. It is not just “and.”
  • 먹고 잤어요. = I ate and slept.
  • 먹다가 잤어요. = I fell asleep while eating / while I was eating, I ended up sleeping.

🎨 Formation Rules

Attach -다가 to the verb stem.

1. Action verbs + 다가

  • 가다 [ga-da] → 가다가 [ga-da-ga] = while going / on the way
  • 오다 [o-da] → 오다가 [o-da-ga] = while coming
  • 먹다 [meok-da] → 먹다가 [meok-da-ga] = while eating
  • 읽다 [ik-da] → 읽다가 [ik-da-ga] = while reading
  • 공부하다 → 공부하다가 = while studying

2. Short form: -다

In some fixed or casual expressions, -다가 can shorten to -다.
  • 갖다가 버리다 → 갖다 버리다 = take and throw away
  • 가져다가 놓다 → 가져다 놓다 = bring and put down
For learners, it is safest to first learn the full form -다가.

3. Past action + -았/었다가

Use -았/었다가 when the first action is completed and then reversed, changed, or followed by another state/action.
  • 문을 열었다가 닫았어요.
      • I opened the door and then closed it. 🚪
  • 옷을 입었다가 벗었어요.
      • I put on clothes and then took them off. 👕
  • 구두를 신었다가 발이 아파서 벗었어요.
      • I put on dress shoes, but my feet hurt, so I took them off. 👞

4. -다가 보니 / -다가 보면

These related patterns mean “while doing it, I realized…” or “if you keep doing it…”
  • 한국어를 공부하다가 보니 재미있어졌어요.
      • As I kept studying Korean, it became fun. 📚
  • 계속 하다가 보면 익숙해질 거예요.
      • If you keep doing it, you’ll get used to it. 🌱

Tense warning
For “while doing X, Y happened,” the first verb usually stays as the plain stem + 다가.
  • ✅ 운동하다가 다쳤어요. = I got hurt while exercising.
  • ❌ 운동했 他가 다쳤어요 for simple “while exercising”
 
Use -았/었다가 when the first action was completed, then changed/reversed.

🔍 -다가 vs -(으)면서 vs -고

-다가 = interruption/change during an action

  • 공부하다가 잠들었어요.
      • I fell asleep while studying.

-(으)면서 = simultaneous actions

  • 음악을 들으면서 공부했어요.
      • I studied while listening to music.

-고 = sequence/listing

  • 공부하고 잤어요.
      • I studied and slept. / I studied, then slept.
Daily learner tip: If the first action is interrupted or changes into another event, use -다가. If both actions continue together, use -(으)면서.

🧩 Common Patterns

1. 가다가... = while going / on the way

  • 집에 가다가 친구를 만났어요. = I met a friend on my way home.
  • 회사에 가다가 커피를 샀어요. = I bought coffee on my way to work.
  • 학교에 가다가 비가 왔어요. = It rained while I was going to school.

2. 자다가... = while sleeping / in the middle of sleep

  • 자다가 깼어요. = I woke up while sleeping.
  • 자다가 전화가 왔어요. = A call came while I was sleeping.
  • 자다가 꿈을 꿨어요. = I had a dream while sleeping.

3. -다가 보니 = while doing it, I realized...

  • 공부하다가 보니 재미있어졌어요. = As I kept studying, it became fun.
  • 걷다가 보니 바다에 도착했어요. = As I kept walking, I arrived at the sea.
  • 살다가 보니 이런 일도 있어요. = As you live, things like this happen too.

📚 Cross-check note

Korean.go.kr also notes another usage where another action appears while an action is in progress, and gives guidance that -았/었다가 can show a completed action followed by a change or reversal.
Practical lesson choice: teach -다가 as “while doing… then something happened/changed,” and separately teach -았/었다가 as “did once, then changed/reversed.”

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • ❌ Using -다가 for two actions that peacefully continue together → ✅ Use -(으)면서.
  • ❌ 음악을 듣다가 공부했어요 when you mean “I studied while listening to music” → ✅ 음악을 들으면서 공부했어요.
  • ❌ 먹고 전화가 왔어요 when you mean “a call came while I was eating” → ✅ 먹다가 전화가 왔어요.
  • ❌ Using -았/었다가 for every past sentence → ✅ Use it when the first action was completed and then changed/reversed.
  • ❌ Thinking -다가 always means an accident → ✅ It can show interruption, change, chance events, or a new action during an ongoing action.
Bottom line: -다가 is the “in the middle of doing X, Y happened” connector. Use it for interruptions and changes: 공부하다가 잠들었어요, 가다가 친구를 만났어요, 요리하다가 다쳤어요. 🔄✨
