🌈 The Big Picture

-는 데다가 is the grammar of stacking extra information.

It says:

“A is true, and on top of that, B is also true.”

Examples:
  • 이 식당은 맛있는 데다가 가격도 싸요.
    • [i sik-dang-eun ma-sin-neun de-da-ga ga-gyeok-do ssa-yo]
This restaurant is tasty, and on top of that, it is cheap too. 🍽️
  • 오늘은 비가 오는 데다가 바람도 많이 불어요.
    • [o-neu-reun bi-ga o-neun de-da-ga ba-ram-do ma-ni bu-reo-yo]
Today, it is raining, and on top of that, the wind is blowing a lot. 🌧️
  • 길이 막히는 데다가 버스도 늦게 왔어요.
    • [gi-ri ma-ki-neun de-da-ga beo-seu-do neut-ge wa-sseo-yo]
The traffic was bad, and on top of that, the bus came late too. 🚌

This grammar is especially useful when you want to make a situation feel stronger:
  • good + good = stronger praise
  • bad + bad = stronger complaint
  • reason + additional reason = stronger explanation

  • 전문가 → 전문가인 데다가 = on top of being an expert
  • 인기 상품 → 인기 상품인 데다가 = on top of being a popular item

4. Common shorter form: 데다

You may also see -는 데다 without . It has the same basic meaning.
