What is -라고 하다? 🤔

When you want to tell someone what another person commanded or requested, you use -라고 하다! ⚡
It's like saying "They told me to..." or "They said to..." in English! 📢
This is part of the indirect quotation family in Korean, joining its siblings -고 하다 (statements) and -냐고 하다 (questions)! 👨‍👩‍👧

How to Form It 🔨

For Commands (-라고 하다) 💪

Verb stem + -(으)라고 하다
  • If the stem has a final consonant → add -으라고 하다
  • If the stem has no final consonant → add -라고 하다
Examples:
→ 먹다 → 먹으라고 하다 (told me to eat)
→ 가다 → 가라고 하다 (told me to go)
→ 읽다 → 읽으라고 하다 (told me to read)
→ 쉬다 → 쉬라고 하다 (told me to rest)

For Suggestions (-자고 하다) 🤝

When quoting "Let's..." suggestions, use -자고 하다 instead! 🌟
Verb stem + -자고 하다
Examples:
→ 먹다 → 먹자고 하다 (suggested we eat)
→ 가다 → 가자고 하다 (suggested we go)
→ 놀다 → 놀자고 하다 (suggested we hang out)

Past Tense 🕐

You can also quote past tense commands! Just use the past tense form before adding -라고 하다: ⏰
Verb stem + -았/었/였으라고 하다
→ 어제까지 끝내라고 했어요. (They told me to finish by yesterday.)
→ 10시까지 왔으라고 했어요. (They told me to come by 10 o'clock.)

Negative Commands 🚫

To quote "Don't..." commands, use -지 말라고 하다: ⛔
→ 엄마가 늦게 오지 말라고 했어요. (Mom told me not to come home late.)
→ 선생님이 떠들지 말라고 하셨어요. (The teacher told us not to talk.)
→ 의사가 술 마시지 말라고 했어요. (The doctor told me not to drink alcohol.)

Exceptions ⚠️

Honorific Commands 👑

When quoting honorific commands (시 form), the pattern changes slightly! Use -(으)시라고 하다: 🎩
→ 선생님이 앉으시라고 하셨어요. (The teacher told them to sit down.)
→ 사장님이 들어오시라고 하셨어요. (The boss told them to come in.)

하다 Verbs 📝

For 하다 verbs, you can drop the 하다 and just add -라고 하다: ✨
→ 공부하다 → 공부하라고 하다 or 공부라고 하다
→ 청소하다 → 청소하라고 하다 or 청소라고 하다
Both forms are correct, but the shorter version is more common in casual speech! 🗨️
