TL;DR

  • -어야 되다 and -어야 하다 both express obligation or necessity, meaning "must" or "have to" 📋
  • Attach -어야 되다 to verb stems (use -어/-아/-여 depending on the vowel), and it means something needs to be done ✅
  • -어야 되다 is slightly more colloquial than -어야 하다, but they're mostly interchangeable in everyday speech 🗣️

What does -어야 되다 mean? 🤔

-어야 되다 expresses obligation or necessity — basically "must do" or "have to do" something! 💪
It tells you that something is required, needed, or expected to happen.

How to form it 🔨

Take your verb stem and add the right connector, then attach 되다:
Verb stem + -어야/-아야/-여야 + 되다

Which ending do you use? 🎯

  • If the last vowel of the stem is ㅏ or ㅗ → use -아야 되다 🟠
  • For all other vowels → use -어야 되다 🔵
  • For 하다 verbs → use -여야 되다 (which contracts to -해야 되다) 💜

Examples 📝

→ 가다 → 가야 되다 (must go)
→ 먹다 → 먹어야 되다 (must eat)
→ 공부하다 → 공부해야 되다 (must study)
→ 자다 → 자야 되다 (must sleep)
→ 오다 → 와야 되다 (must come)

In real sentences 💬

→ 내일 일찍 일어나야 돼요. (I have to wake up early tomorrow.)
→ 숙제를 오늘 해야 돼요. (I have to do my homework today.)
→ 병원에 가야 돼. (I need to go to the hospital.)
→ 지금 출발해야 돼요. (We have to leave now.)
→ 매일 운동해야 돼요. (I must exercise every day.)
Notice how 되다 conjugates just like any other verb! 🎉
  • 되다 → 돼 (casual)
  • 되다 → 돼요 (polite)
  • 되다 → 됩니다 (formal)

-어야 되다 vs -어야 하다 🆚

Here's the thing: -어야 되다 and -어야 하다 mean basically the same thing! 🤷‍♀️
Both express obligation/necessity and are used interchangeably in conversation.
The tiny difference: 🔍
  • -어야 하다 feels slightly more formal and standard 📚
  • -어야 되다 feels a bit more colloquial and casual 💬
Most native speakers use both freely and don't really think about the difference! 😊
→ 가야 해요. = 가야 돼요. (I have to go.)
→ 공부해야 해. = 공부해야 돼. (I have to study.)

Negative form: "don't have to" 🚫

To say you don't have to do something, you can use:
-지 않아도 되다 or -지 않아도 하다
→ 안 가도 돼요. (You don't have to go.)
→ 먹지 않아도 돼요. (You don't have to eat.)
→ 걱정하지 않아도 돼. (You don't have to worry.)

Common mistakes
  • 🚫 Confusing -어야 되다 with -고 싶다 (want to) — remember that -어야 되다 expresses obligation, not desire
  • ⚠️ Forgetting to conjugate the verb stem correctly before adding -어야/아야 — 하다 becomes 해야, not 하어야
  • 💡 Using -어야 되다 only in formal situations — both -어야 되다 and -어야 하다 can be used in casual and formal speech
  • ❌ Adding 요 to both parts of the expression — say 해야 돼요, not 해야요 돼요
