Negating Sentences π«
TL;DR
- You can make a sentence negative by adding μ before the verb or adjective π«
- For verbs with two parts (νλ€ verbs), you can also insert μ between them (κ³΅λΆ + μ + νλ€) βοΈ
- λͺ» is used instead of μ when you can't do something due to lack of ability or external circumstances π€·ββοΈ
Making Sentences Negative with μ β
In Korean, turning a positive sentence into a negative one is super simple! π Just add μ right before the verb or adjective.
Basic Pattern π
Subject + μ + Verb/Adjective
Β
β μ λ μ λ¨Ήμ΄μ.
(I don't eat.)
β μ€λμ μ λ°λΉ μ.
(I'm not busy today.)
β μΉκ΅¬κ° μ μμ.
(My friend isn't coming.)
Β
See? Just pop μ in front and you're done! π
Β
νλ€ Verbs: Two Ways! βοΈ
For verbs ending in νλ€ (like 곡λΆνλ€, μ리νλ€, μ΄λνλ€), you have two options for making them negative! π€©
Β
Option 1: μ before the whole verb π΅
β μ λ μ 곡λΆν΄μ.
(I don't study.)
Β
Option 2: μ inserted in the middle βοΈ
β μ λ κ³΅λΆ μ ν΄μ.
(I don't study.)
Β
Both mean exactly the same thing! π€ Koreans use both freely, though inserting μ in the middle sounds slightly more natural in conversation. π¬
Β
More examples:
β μ΄λ μ ν΄μ. / μ μ΄λν΄μ.
(I don't exercise.)
β μ리 μ ν΄μ. / μ μ리ν΄μ.
(I don't cook.)
Β
When You CAN'T Do Something: λͺ» π
Use λͺ» instead of μ when you're unable to do something because you lack the ability or something is preventing you! π§
Β
β μ λ λͺ» λ¨Ήμ΄μ.
(I can't eat. β Maybe I'm too full or have an allergy π€’)
β νκ΅μ΄λ₯Ό λͺ» ν΄μ.
(I can't speak Korean. β I don't have the ability yet π)
β μ€λ λͺ» κ°μ.
(I can't go today. β Something is preventing me π)
Β
λͺ» also works with νλ€ verbs in two ways, just like μ! π
β μ΄λ λͺ» ν΄μ. / λͺ» μ΄λν΄μ.
(I can't exercise.)
Β
μ vs λͺ»: Quick Comparison π
- μ = won't / don't (by choice or in general) π ββοΈ
- λͺ» = can't (lacking ability or blocked by circumstances) π«
Β
β μ λ λ§€μ΄ μμμ μ λ¨Ήμ΄μ.
(I don't eat spicy food. β It's my choice! π)
β μ λ λ§€μ΄ μμμ λͺ» λ¨Ήμ΄μ.
(I can't eat spicy food. β My stomach can't handle it! π₯π΅)
Β
Exceptions β οΈ
Negating μλ€ and μλ€ π
μλ€ (to have/exist) becomes μλ€ (to not have/not exist) β you don't use μ or λͺ» here! π
Β
β μκ°μ΄ μμ΄μ.
(I don't have time.) β
β μκ°μ΄ μ μμ΄μ. β
Β
μλ€ (to know) π§
For μλ€, use λͺ¨λ₯΄λ€ (to not know) instead of μ μλ€! π‘
Β
β λͺ¨λ₯΄κ² μ΄μ.
(I don't know.) β
β μ μμμ. β (Sounds very awkward!)
Β
You've got this! π Negating in Korean is way easier than you thought, right? π Just remember: μ for general negation, λͺ» when you can't, and watch out for those special exceptions! π―

Common mistakes
- π΄ Placing μ after the verb instead of before it (e.g., "κ°μ μ" instead of "μ κ°μ")
- π΄ Using μ with μλ€/μλ€ when they already express existence/non-existence
- π΄ Forgetting that νλ€ verbs split: κ³΅λΆ μ ν΄μ (not μ 곡λΆν΄μ)
- π΄ Confusing μ (won't/don't) with λͺ» (can't) - they express different meanings
