TL;DR
- Use -면 after a verb stem to mean "if" or "when" (e.g., 가면 = if you go)
- Add 만약 at the beginning for emphasis or formality (completely optional!)
- The conditional clause always comes first, then the result
How to say "if" in Korean
Korean uses -면 attached to verb stems to express "if" or "when." Super simple! 🎯
Pattern: Verb stem + -면
Basic structure
The "if" part always comes before the result in Korean.
→ 비가 오면 집에 있을 거예요.
(If it rains, I will stay home.)
→ 시간이 있으면 영화 보러 갈까요?
(If you have time, shall we go watch a movie?)
→ 배고프면 먹어요.
(If you're hungry, eat.)
Adding 만약 for emphasis
만약 (if) can be added at the beginning to sound more formal or to emphasize the condition. Totally optional! ✨
→ 만약 내일 날씨가 좋으면 공원에 갈 거예요.
(If the weather is nice tomorrow, I'll go to the park.)
→ 만약 돈이 없으면 어떻게 해요?
(If there's no money, what do we do?)
With different verb types
Action verbs:
→ 일찍 자면 건강해요.
(If you sleep early, you'll be healthy.)
Descriptive verbs (adjectives):
→ 음식이 맛있으면 많이 먹어요.
(If the food is delicious, I eat a lot.)
이다 (to be):
→ 학생이면 할인 받아요.
(If you're a student, you get a discount.)
Exceptions
받침 or no 받침: It doesn't matter! -면 works the same way for all verb stems. 🙌
→ 먹다 → 먹으면
→ 가다 → 가면

Common mistakes
- 🚫 Forgetting to drop ㄹ from verb stems ending in ㄹ before adding -면 (e.g., 알다 → 알면, not 알르면)
- 🚫 Confusing -면 with -면서 (-면 = if/when condition, -면서 = while doing)
- 🚫 Using past tense with -면 for future conditions (use present tense: 가면, not 갔으면)
- 🚫 Not adjusting vowel harmony (-으면 after consonants, -면 after vowels/ㄹ)
