TL;DR

  • means "ability" or "possibility" and is used after verb stems to say "can" or "be able to" 🎯
  • Form it by adding -(으)ㄹ 수 있다 (can do) or -(으)ㄹ 수 없다 (can't do) to verb stems 🔧
  • Use -ㄹ 수 after vowel-ending stems and -을 수 after consonant-ending stems 📝

What is 수? 🤔

literally means "way" or "means," but when combined with verbs, it expresses ability or possibility — basically "can" in English! 💪
Think of it like this: -(으)ㄹ 수 있다 = "there is a way to do it" = "can do" ✨

How to Form It 🔨

The pattern is super simple! 😊
Verb stem + -(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다

When to use -ㄹ 수 vs -을 수 🎯

-ㄹ 수 → Use after stems ending in a vowel 🌈
-을 수 → Use after stems ending in a consonant 🧱

Formation Examples 📚

가다 (to go) → 갈 수 있다 (can go) 🚶
먹다 (to eat) → 먹을 수 있다 (can eat) 🍜
하다 (to do) → 할 수 있다 (can do) ⚡
보다 (to see) → 볼 수 있다 (can see) 👀
읽다 (to read) → 읽을 수 있다 (can read) 📖
쓰다 (to write) → 쓸 수 있다 (can write) ✍️

Saying "Can't" or "Unable to" ❌

Just swap 있다 with 없다! 🔄
-(으)ㄌ 수 없다 = can't / unable to 🚫
한국어를 읽을 수 없어요. (I can't read Korean.) 😅
오늘 갈 수 없어요. (I can't go today.) 😔

Example Sentences 💬

김치를 먹을 수 있어요? (Can you eat kimchi?) 🌶️
네, 먹을 수 있어요! (Yes, I can eat it!) 😋
한국어로 말할 수 있어요. (I can speak in Korean.) 🗣️
수영할 수 있어요? (Can you swim?) 🏊
아니요, 수영할 수 없어요. (No, I can't swim.) 💦
여기서 사진을 찍을 수 있어요? (Can I take photos here?) 📸
내일 만날 수 있어요. (I can meet tomorrow.) 📅
이 책을 빌릴 수 있어요? (Can I borrow this book?) 📚

Polite vs Casual Forms 🎭

You can adjust the politeness level just like any other sentence! 💕
Formal polite: 할 수 있습니다 / 할 수 없습니다 🎩
Informal polite: 할 수 있어요 / 할 수 없어요 😊
Casual: 할 수 있어 / 할 수 없어 🤙

Exceptions ⚠️

Irregular ㄹ verbs 🌀

Verbs with stems ending in drop the ㄹ before adding -ㄹ 수!
살다 (to live) → + ㄹ 수살 수 있다
만들다 (to make) → 만드 + ㄹ 수만들 수 있다
놀다 (to play) → + ㄹ 수놀 수 있다
(But you still write it with ㄹ — you just don't double it!) 😉

Quick Tip 💡

-(으)ㄹ 수 있다 focuses on ability or possibility (whether something CAN happen) 🌟
If you want to express permission ("may I...?"), Koreans often use -(으)ㄹ 수 있어요? in questions, but -아/어도 돼요? is more direct for asking permission! 🙏

You've got this! 수 is one of the most useful grammar patterns you'll learn — you'll be using it constantly! 🚀✨

Common mistakes ⚠️
  • 🚫 Don't forget to drop ㄹ before adding ㄹ 수 있다 (e.g., 살다 → 살 수 있다, NOT 살ㄹ 수 있다)
  • 🚫 Remember that 있다/없다 changes based on formality (있어요/없어요 for polite, 있다/없다 for casual)
  • 🚫 When using 못, place it before the verb instead of using ㄹ/을 수 없다 (both express inability, but the structure differs)
  • 🚫 Don't confuse possibility with permission - use 아/어도 되다 for permission, not ㄹ/을 수 있다
