바빠요 [ba-ppa-yo] ("I'm busy") is one of the most useful phrases in Korean office life. To explain why you're busy, follow up with the reason: 일이 많아서 바빠요 — "I'm busy because I have a lot of work." The pattern -아/어서 바빠요 ("busy because of...") lets you give context naturally. 💼

When declining something politely, soften your "no" with a reason ending in -아/어서 followed by 못 갈 것 같아요 ("I don't think I can go") or 어려울 것 같아요 ("it seems difficult"). Adding 것 같아요 ("it seems like") makes refusals feel gentler and less abrupt — very important in Korean workplace culture! 🙏

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

❌ Saying just 바빠요 with no context, which can sound curt → ✅ Add a reason: 일이 많아서 바빠요.

❌ Confusing 바쁘다 (busy) with 바라다 (to hope/wish) — similar sounds, different meanings → ✅ Double-check the verb stem.

❌ Using 못 가요 bluntly to decline → ✅ Soften with 못 갈 것 같아요 or 어려울 것 같아요.
