🌈 The Big Picture

마당 can literally mean a yard/courtyard, but in this grammar it works more like scene, situation, or circumstances.
 
So -(으)ㄴ/는 마당에 says:
 
Given that we are already in this situation, the following action/comment/decision should be understood that way.
 
It often carries one of these feelings:
  • 😬 “At a time like this...”
  • 🧱 “Given the situation we’re already in...”
  • ⚠️ “Now that things have already reached this point...”
  • 🙅 “In this situation, doing B is inappropriate/unrealistic/useless.”
  • 💪 “Since it has come to this, we may as well continue.”

The title says “while/in the middle of,” but the key is not a neutral “while.” It is closer to “in this situation where...” or “given that we’re already at this point...”

1. Completed action/state: V-(으)ㄴ 마당에

Use this when something has already happened and now creates the situation.
  • 일이 이렇게 되다 → 일이 이렇게 된 마당에 [i-ri i-reo-ke doe-da → i-ri i-reo-ke doen ma-da-nge] — now that things have come to this
  • 사고가 나다 → 사고가 난 마당에 [sa-go-ga na-da → sa-go-ga nan ma-da-nge] — given that an accident has already happened
  • 결정이 내려지다 → 결정이 내려진 마당에 [gyeol-jeo-ngi nae-ryeo-ji-da → gyeol-jeo-ngi nae-ryeo-jin ma-da-nge] — now that the decision has been made
 

2. Ongoing/general action: V-는 마당에

Use this when the situation is ongoing or generally true.
  • 모두가 기다리다 → 모두가 기다리는 마당에 [mo-du-ga gi-da-ri-da → mo-du-ga gi-da-ri-neun ma-da-nge] — when everyone is waiting
  • 회사가 어려움을 겪다 → 회사가 어려움을 겪는 마당에 [hoe-sa-ga eo-ryeo-u-meul gyeong-neun ma-da-nge] — when the company is going through hardship
  • 사람들이 불안해하다 → 사람들이 불안해하는 마당에 [sa-ram-deu-ri bu-ran-hae-ha-da → sa-ram-deu-ri bu-ran-hae-ha-neun ma-da-nge] — when people are anxious
 

3. Descriptive verb/adjective: A-(으)ㄴ 마당에

Use this when the situation has a certain state.
  • 바쁘다 → 바쁜 마당에 [ba-ppeu-da → ba-ppeun ma-da-nge] — when someone is already busy
  • 힘들다 → 힘든 마당에 [him-deul-da → him-deun ma-da-nge] — when things are already hard
  • 돈이 없다 → 돈이 없는 마당에 [do-ni eop-tta → do-ni eom-neun ma-da-nge] — given that there is no money
 

4. Noun: N인 마당에

Use this when the situation is identified as a noun/category.
  • 위기인 마당에 [wi-gi-in ma-da-nge] — in a crisis situation
  • 마지막 기회인 마당에 [ma-ji-mak gi-hoe-in ma-da-nge] — given that this is the last chance
  • 중요한 시험인 마당에 [jung-yo-han si-heo-min ma-da-nge] — given that it is an important exam
 

5. Common chunk: 이왕 이렇게 된 마당에

This means since it has already come to this / now that things have turned out this way.
  • 이왕 이렇게 된 마당에 끝까지 해 봅시다.

2. Everyone is struggling → selfish action feels wrong

      When everyone is having a hard time, I can’t say only I’ll rest.
 

3. No money → extra spending is unrealistic

  • 생활비도 부족한 마당에 새 차를 사는 건 무리예요.

      Given that even living expenses are short, buying a new car is unrealistic.
 

4. Already decided → continuing makes sense

  • -(으)ㄴ/는 이상 — now that / as long as; locked-in condition → duty/conclusion.

  • -는 판에 — in a situation where; often colloquial and can sound sharper or more irritated.
      • 다들 바쁜 판에 놀러 가자고요? [da-deul ba-ppeun pa-ne nol-leo ga-ja-go-yo] = Everyone’s busy, and you’re saying we should go play?

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • ❌ Using 마당에 for neutral simultaneous action → ✅ use -면서, -는 동안, or -는 도중에.
  • ❌ 공부하는 마당에 음악을 들었어요 for “I listened to music while studying” → ✅ 공부하면서 음악을 들었어요.
  • ❌ 학생 마당에 → ✅ 학생인 마당에 if you mean “given that someone is a student.”
  • ❌ 일이 이렇게 되는 마당에 when the situation has already happened → ✅ 일이 이렇게 된 마당에.
  • ❌ Using it for tiny cheerful everyday reasons → ✅ save it for situations that feel significant, awkward, negative, or already hard to change.
  • ⚠️ 마당에 can sound judgmental. It often implies, “Given this situation, doing that is questionable.”
 
🧭 Bottom line: -(으)ㄴ/는 마당에 puts the listener inside an already-existing situation and asks them to judge the next action from there. It is excellent for “at a time like this,” “given that things have come to this,” and “in this situation, B makes sense/doesn’t make sense.”
