Try this sentence: 쓰레기 배출을 줄이기 위해 재사용을 실천하는 게 처음엔 번거롭게 느껴졌지만, 꾸준함이 쌓이니 자연스러운 습관이 됐어요. (Practicing reuse to reduce waste emissions felt cumbersome at first, but as consistency built up, it became a natural habit.)
🌈 The Big Picture
Living a more eco-friendly life often starts small — cutting down on what you throw away, reusing what you already have, and sticking with new habits even when they feel like extra work. This lesson covers five words for talking about waste reduction and the mindset it takes to keep at it.
🎨 The Core Zero-Waste Family
1. 배출 — emission, discharge ♻️
Discharge or emission, often of waste, gas, or pollutants (배출하다).
- 쓰레기 배출량을 줄였어요. (I reduced the amount of waste discharged.)
- 탄소를 배출해요. (It emits carbon.)
Note: Common collocations include 쓰레기 배출 and 배출량 (amount of emissions).
2. 줄이기 — reducing 📉
The noun/gerund form of 줄이다 (to reduce), often used as a label or topic.
- 플라스틱 사용 줄이기. (Reducing plastic use.)
- 쓰레기 줄이기 캠페인. (Waste reduction campaign.)
Note: 줄이다 = to reduce (transitive); 줄다 = to decrease (intransitive).
3. 재사용 — reuse ♻️
Using something again instead of throwing it away (재사용하다).
- 병을 재사용해요. (I reuse bottles.)
- 재사용이 가능한 제품을 선택해요. (I choose products that can be reused.)
Note: Related to but distinct from 재활용 (recycling).
4. 번거롭다 — cumbersome, troublesome 😓
Describes something annoying, inconvenient, or requiring extra effort.
- 분리배출이 번거로워요. (Sorting waste for disposal is a hassle.)
- 매번 씻어서 쓰는 게 좀 번거로워요. (Washing it to reuse each time is a bit of a hassle.)
Note: Not "difficult" (어렵다) — more "inconvenient, extra effort."
5. 꾸준함 — consistency, steadiness 💪
The noun form of 꾸준하다 (to be steady/consistent) — doing something steadily over time.
- 꾸준함이 중요해요. (Consistency is important.)
- 꾸준함의 결과예요. (It's the result of consistency.)
Note: 꾸준히 (adverb, steadily) vs 꾸준함 (noun, consistency/steadiness).
🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence
- 쓰레기 배출을 줄이기 위해 다양한 방법을 시도해 봤어요. (I tried various methods to reduce waste emissions.) ♻️📉 — 배출 + 줄이기.
- 처음엔 재사용이 번거로웠지만 점점 익숙해졌어요. (At first, reuse felt cumbersome, but I gradually got used to it.) ♻️😓 — 재사용 + 번거롭다.
- 작은 노력이라도 꾸준함이 쌓이면 큰 변화를 만들어요. (Even small efforts, if consistency builds up, create big change.) 💪 — 꾸준함.
🧩 General Formation Rule

🪞 Synonym Alert
- 배출 vs 처리 — 배출 specifically means discharging or emitting something out, such as waste or gas, into the environment; 처리 is the broader act of handling, processing, or disposing of something, which can include treatment, not just release.
- 줄이기 vs 절약 — 줄이기 is the general act of reducing the amount or quantity of something; 절약 specifically implies saving resources, money, or energy through frugal use — a more economical nuance.
- 재사용 vs 재활용 — 재사용 means using the same item again as-is, like refilling a jar; 재활용 means recycling — processing a material to make something new from it.
- 번거롭다 vs 귀찮다 — both describe something inconvenient or bothersome, but 번거롭다 tends to describe a process that requires extra steps or effort, more neutral and objective; 귀찮다 expresses the speaker's personal feeling of not wanting to bother, more subjective and colloquial.
- 꾸준함 vs 인내 — 꾸준함 is about doing something steadily and consistently over time; 인내 is about enduring difficulty or hardship — patience and perseverance through tough circumstances, not necessarily about regular repetition.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
- ❌ 배출 used for "throwing away trash" in general everyday speech, as in "쓰레기를 배출하러 가요" for casually taking out the trash → ✅ 배출 is more formal/technical, used for 쓰레기 배출량 and 분리배출; for casually taking out the trash, 버리다 is more natural.
- ❌ 줄이기 used as a verb directly in a sentence, as in "저는 매일 줄이기해요" → ✅ 줄이기 is a noun/gerund form, used as a label or topic like 사용 줄이기; to express the action in a sentence, use 줄이다 (저는 사용을 줄여요).
- ❌ 재사용 and 재활용 used interchangeably → ✅ 재사용 = reuse as-is; 재활용 = recycle into something new. Mixing them up changes the meaning.
- ❌ 번거롭다 used to describe a person's character, as in "그 사람은 번거로워요" meaning "that person is annoying" → ✅ 번거롭다 describes a task or process being cumbersome, not a person; for an annoying person, other expressions like 귀찮게 하다 (to bother someone) are used instead.
- ❌ 꾸준함 conjugated like a verb, as in "꾸준함해요" → ✅ 꾸준함 is a noun; to express the action, use 꾸준히 하다 (to do consistently) or 꾸준하다 (to be consistent/steady).
배출을 줄이기 위한 재사용, 처음엔 번거로워도 꾸준함이 쌓이면 어느새 습관이 돼요. 작은 실천이 큰 변화의 시작이에요! 🎉♻️💪
