Being a good conversation partner isn't about having the perfect response — it's about genuinely tuning in. This lesson covers the vocabulary for that: caring about what someone says (관심), actively listening (귀 기울이다), feeling what they feel (공감), meaning it (진심으로), and showing it (반응). Together, these five words describe the difference between hearing someone and truly being there for them.

🎨 The Core Sincere Interest Family

1. 관심 — interest, concern 👀

A noun for caring about or being curious about someone or something.

관심이 있어요. (I'm interested.)

관심을 갖다 (to take/develop interest)

관심을 보이다 (to show interest)

— Grammar note: 관심 pairs with 이/가 있다/없다 (have/don't have interest) and with 을/를 갖다/보이다 (to take/show interest) — the topic of interest takes 에.

2. 귀 기울이다 — to listen attentively (lit. "to lean one's ear") 👂

A vivid phrase combining 귀 (ear) + 기울이다 (to lean/tilt) — picturing someone literally leaning in to listen closely.

귀 기울여 들어요. (I listen attentively.)

귀 기울이는 사람 (a person who listens attentively)

— Grammar note: 기울이다 conjugates as a regular verb — 기울여요 / 기울였어요 / 기울일 거예요. Often combined with 듣다 (to hear): 귀 기울여 듣다.

3. 공감 — empathy, resonance 💗

A noun for emotionally connecting with someone — feeling WITH them, not just understanding them.

공감해요. (I empathize / I feel the same way.)

공감이 가요. (This resonates with me.)

공감돼요. (This feels relatable.)

— Grammar note: 공감하다 = active, you empathize with someone; 공감되다 / 공감이 가다 = passive, something resonates with or feels relatable to you.

4. 진심으로 — sincerely, from the heart 💛

An adverb formed from 진심 (true heart, sincerity) + 으로 (by means of) — describes doing something with genuine feeling.

진심으로 감사합니다. (Thank you sincerely.)

진심으로 축하해요. (Congratulations from the heart.)

— Grammar note: 진심으로 goes directly before the verb it modifies, adding emotional sincerity to whatever action follows.

5. 반응 — reaction, response 🔄

A noun for how someone responds — verbally, emotionally, or even just with their expression.

반응이 좋았어요. (The reaction was good.)

반응을 보이다 (to show a reaction)

— Grammar note: 반응 can be a thing that "exists" (반응이 있다/없다) or an action someone does (반응하다, 반응을 보이다).

🪞 Synonym Alert

관심 vs 흥미 — 관심 is broader and implies genuine care or concern (about people, issues, topics); 흥미 leans toward curiosity or being entertained, often about hobbies or activities.

귀 기울이다 vs 듣다 — 듣다 simply means "to hear/listen," which can be passive; 귀 기울이다 means to listen actively and intentionally, leaning in to really take it in.

공감하다 vs 이해하다 — 공감하다 is feeling WITH someone emotionally; 이해하다 is understanding something intellectually, which doesn't require sharing the feeling.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

❌ 관심해요 (treating 관심 as if it conjugates directly like a verb) → ✅ 관심이 있어요 / 관심을 가져요 — 관심 is a noun and needs 있다/갖다/보이다 to function as a predicate.

❌ 귀 기울려요 (mixing up the stem) → ✅ 귀 기울여요 — the stem is 기울이- + -어요 = 기울여요.

❌ 공감해요 used for "this song lyric really speaks to me" → ✅ 공감돼요 / 공감이 가요 — use the passive forms when something resonates with you, rather than the active 공감하다.

❌ 들어요 진심으로 (adverb placed after the verb) → ✅ 진심으로 들어요 — adverbs like 진심으로 go before the verb they describe.

❌ 반응하다 used to mean "answer a question" → ✅ 대답하다 for verbal answers; 반응하다 is for reactions in general, which may not involve words at all.
