TL;DR 🦄
- ☕ 점심 opens every office small talk — "where are you eating?" is the Korean equivalent of "how's the weather?"
- 📰 근황 is the word for "what's new with you" — more natural than trying to translate "how have you been?"
- 🗣️ 나누다 = to share/exchange (conversation, food, opinions) — versatile and essential for talking about connecting with people
🎧 Iru Helper Note — Head to the Korean Helper Widgets and type any sentence from this lesson to hear it at natural speed. 시시콜콜하다 in particular has a great rhythm once you hear it spoken. ☕
🌈 The Big Picture
Korean office small talk follows a very predictable script — and knowing that script makes navigating the workplace dramatically easier. It's not random chat; it's a social ritual built around food, recent updates, and appropriate depth. These five words help you participate naturally without oversharing or saying the wrong thing.
점심 anchors lunchtime culture. 근황 lets you ask about someone's life without being intrusive. 시시콜콜하다 helps you know when you've gone too deep. 적당히 is the art of "just enough." And 나누다 describes the whole exchange itself.
🎨 The Core Office Small Talk Family
1. 점심 — lunch ☕
The single most common office small talk topic in Korea. 점심 먹었어요? = "Did you eat lunch?" is a greeting, not literally asking about food. 점심을 같이 먹다 = to eat lunch together.
2. 근황 — recent news/updates, how things have been 📰
What's been going on with someone lately. 근황을 묻다 = to ask about someone's recent life. 근황을 전하다 = to share one's recent news. More natural than a direct translation of "how have you been."
3. 시시콜콜하다 — to be trivial, petty, overly detailed 🙄
Used when something is too much, too nitpicky, or overly detailed. 시시콜콜한 얘기 = trivial/petty talk. Often used to signal that someone is getting into too much detail or making a fuss about minor things.
4. 적당히 — moderately, at the right level, just enough 🎯
An adverb meaning "to the right degree." 적당히 하다 = to do something at the right level, not too much/not too little. Very common in workplace and social contexts: 적당히 말해요 = say the right amount (don't overshare).
5. 나누다 — to share, divide, exchange 🤝
Used for sharing conversation, food, opinions, or feelings. 얘기를 나누다 = to exchange conversation. 점심을 나누다 = to share lunch. 생각을 나누다 = to share thoughts.
🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence
점심 먹으면서 근황 얘기를 나눴어요.
We exchanged recent updates over lunch. ☕📰
— -으면서 = while doing; 얘기를 나누다 = to exchange conversation
시시콜콜한 얘기는 적당히 하는 게 좋아요.
It's better to keep trivial talk to a moderate amount. 🙄🎯
— -는 게 좋다 = it's better to do; 시시콜콜한 = modifier form of 시시콜콜하다
요즘 근황을 몰라서 한번 물어봤어요.
I didn't know how things had been lately so I asked once. 📰
— 몰라서 = because I didn't know; 한번 물어보다 = to try asking once
🧩 General Formation Rule
- 시시콜콜하다 → 하다 adjective: 시시콜콜해요 / 시시콜콜한 얘기 / 시시콜콜하게 따지다
- 적당히 → adverb, no conjugation — always before verb: 적당히 먹다, 적당히 말하다
- 나누다 → regular verb: 나눠요 / 나눴어요 / 나눌 수 있어요 / 나누면서
- 근황을 묻다 → 묻다 is ㄷ-irregular: 물어요 / 물었어요 / 물어봐요
- 점심을 먹다 → regular: 먹어요 / 먹었어요 / 먹을 거예요

🪞 Synonym Alert
- 근황 ≈ 요즘 어때요? — 요즘 어때요 is more casual/spoken; 근황 sounds slightly more considered and is common in texting/written catch-ups
- 나누다 ≈ 공유하다 — 공유하다 = to share (information/files, more transactional); 나누다 = to share warmly, to exchange (more relational, emotional)
- 시시콜콜하다 ≈ 사소하다 — 사소하다 = trivial/minor (neutral); 시시콜콜하다 carries a slight negative tone of "making too much of minor things"
- 적당히 ≈ 알맞게 — 알맞게 = appropriately (slightly more formal); 적당히 is more casual and widely used
⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge
❌ 점심 먹었어요? treated as a real question → ✅ It's a greeting — respond naturally: 네, 먹었어요. 어디 가셨어요? — Don't answer with a full meal description unless the conversation calls for it.
❌ 근황을 이야기하다 → ✅ 근황을 나누다 / 근황을 전하다 — 근황 pairs most naturally with 묻다, 나누다, 전하다, or 알리다. 이야기하다 isn't wrong but feels slightly unnatural with 근황.
❌ 적당히해요 (written together as one word) → ✅ 적당히 해요 — 적당히 is an adverb; it should be written separately from the verb.
❌ Treating 시시콜콜하다 as always negative → ✅ It can be affectionate: 시시콜콜한 얘기도 나눌 수 있는 친구 = a friend you can share even trivial everyday chat with (positive context with close friends).
오늘부터 회사에서 한국어로 자연스럽게 소통해 봐요! ☕🗣️ 점심 먹으면서 근황도 나누고, 적당히 즐거운 시간을 보내요. 😊
