Whether something is 가깝다 (close) or 편리하다 (convenient) shapes how Koreans evaluate where they live and how they plan their day. 🏘️

🎨 The Core Neighborhood Facilities Family

1. 편의시설 — convenience facilities / amenities 🏢

편의시설이 잘 되어 있다 = to be well-equipped with amenities. 편의시설이 가깝다 = the amenities are close by. An umbrella term covering everything from libraries to pharmacies — often used when describing an apartment or neighborhood.

2. 도서관 — library 📚

도서관에 가다 = to go to the library. 도서관에서 책을 빌리다 = to borrow a book from the library. 도서관 카드 = library card. A quiet public space for studying and borrowing books.

3. 공원 — park 🌳

공원에서 산책하다 = to take a walk in the park. 공원에 놀러 가다 = to go to the park for fun. 동네 공원 = neighborhood park. A common spot for exercise, picnics, and relaxing.

4. 은행 — bank 🏦

은행에 가다 = to go to the bank. 은행에서 돈을 찾다 = to withdraw money from the bank. 통장을 만들다 = to open a bank account. ≠ 병원 (hospital) — easy to mix up the sounds, but completely different places!

5. 병원 — hospital 🏥

병원에 가다 = to go to the hospital. 병원에서 진료를 받다 = to receive medical treatment. 병원에 입원하다 = to be admitted to the hospital. Covers everything from small clinics to large hospitals.

6. 마트 — mart / grocery store 🛒

마트에 가다 = to go to the mart. 마트에서 장을 보다 = to go grocery shopping at the mart. 동네 마트 = neighborhood mart. Smaller and more local than 대형마트 (big-box store).

7. 우체국 — post office 📮

우체국에 가다 = to go to the post office. 우체국에서 소포를 보내다 = to send a package at the post office. 우체국 택배 = post office delivery. Also handles mail, banking, and bill payments in Korea.

8. 약국 — pharmacy 💊

약국에 가다 = to go to the pharmacy. 약국에서 약을 사다 = to buy medicine at the pharmacy. 약사 = pharmacist. Usually located right next to or near a 병원.

9. 가깝다 — to be close / near 📍 (ㅂ irregular!)

가까워요 = it's close (present). 가까웠어요 = it was close (past). 가까운 + noun = a close ___ (modifier). The ㅂ becomes 워 before a vowel — but stays ㅂ before a consonant: 가깝지 않아요 = it's not close.

10. 편리하다 — to be convenient ✨ (regular 하다 adjective)

편리해요 = it's convenient. 편리한 + noun = a convenient ___ (modifier). 편리하게 = conveniently (adverb). Describes how something makes life easier — not the same as 편하다 (comfortable, more personal).

🧩 General Formation Rule

편의시설, 도서관, 공원, 은행, 병원, 마트, 우체국, 약국 → these eight place nouns don't conjugate — just attach particles: 에 (to/at), 에서 (at, doing an action), 와/과 (and).

가깝다 → ㅂ irregular: 가까워요 (present) / 가까웠어요 (past) / 가까운 (modifier) / 가깝지 않아요 (negative, ㅂ stays before a consonant) / 가까우면 (if/when) / 가까우니까 (because) / 가까워지다 (to become close).

편리하다 → regular 하다 adjective: 편리해요 (present) / 편리했어요 (past) / 편리한 (modifier) / 편리하게 (adverb) / 편리하지 않아요 (negative) / 편리해지다 (to become convenient).

가깝다 ≈ 멀지 않다 — 멀지 않다 = "not far" (negation of 멀다); 가깝다 = "close" (direct positive statement) — same idea, different angle.

❌ 마트에 가요 (when you mean a big chain store) → ✅ 대형마트에 가요 — 마트 alone usually implies a smaller neighborhood store; specify 대형마트 for big-box stores.
