Airports can be overwhelming, especially when they're 복잡하다 (crowded) and you're trying to find your 수하물 (luggage) or get to your 탑승 (boarding) gate. Knowing how to ask for 안내 (information/guidance) and move 신속하게 (swiftly) through security and check-in will make your travels much smoother. This lesson covers the essential vocabulary for navigating any Korean airport with confidence.

🎨 The Core Airport Family

1. 수하물 — luggage / baggage 🧳
Used at check-in counters and baggage claim. You'll often hear "수하물을 부치다" (to check luggage) or "수하물을 찾다" (to claim luggage).
Note: At smaller airports, you might also hear "짐" used more casually for "luggage."
2. 탑승 — boarding ✈️
Refers to boarding the plane. Common phrases include "탑승 시간" (boarding time) and "탑승구" (boarding gate).
Note: Listen for announcements like "탑승을 시작하겠습니다" (Boarding will now begin).
3. 복잡하다 — to be crowded / complicated 😵
Describes both crowded spaces and complicated processes. "공항이 복잡해요" means "The airport is crowded."
Note: This word covers both physical crowding and mental complexity — context tells you which.
4. 신속하게 — swiftly / promptly ⚡
An adverb describing quick, efficient action — perfect for describing moving through security or customs.
Note: Often paired with verbs like 움직이다 (to move) or 처리하다 (to process).
5. 안내 — information / guidance / announcement 📢
Refers to information desks, announcements, and guidance. "안내 방송" means "announcement," and "안내데스크" means "information desk."
Note: If you're lost, look for an "안내데스크" for help.

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

1. 공항이 너무 복잡해서 수하물을 찾는 데 시간이 오래 걸렸어요.
The airport was so crowded that it took a long time to find my luggage.
→ 복잡해서 (crowded + so/because) connects the cause to the result.
2. 탑승 안내 방송이 나오면 신속하게 게이트로 이동하세요.
When the boarding announcement comes on, move to the gate swiftly.
→ 안내 방송 (announcement) + 신속하게 (swiftly) + 이동하세요 (please move) work together as travel instructions.
3. 수하물을 부친 후에 안내데스크에서 탑승권을 다시 확인했어요.
After checking my luggage, I double-checked my boarding pass at the information desk.
→ 부친 후에 (after checking) shows sequence; 안내데스크 combines 안내 + 데스크.

🧩 General Formation Rule

  • 복잡하다 (to be crowded) → 복잡해요 (polite present), 복잡한 (attributive, "crowded ___"), 복잡해서 (because it's crowded)
  • 안내 (information) → 안내하다 (to guide/inform), 안내해 드리다 (honorific, "to guide for someone")
  • 탑승 (boarding) → 탑승하다 (to board), 탑승객 (passenger), 탑승구 (boarding gate)
  • 신속하게 (swiftly) → from 신속하다 (to be swift) + -게 adverb ending
  • 수하물 (luggage) → combines with particles like 을/를 (수하물을 찾다 = to find luggage), 부치다 (to check in)
