🌈 The Big Picture

Meeting friends in Korean is more than 친구를 만났어요 (I met a friend). Natural Korean often includes the plan, the quick stop before or after, the casual chatting, and the feeling of seeing someone. 🤝
This lesson focuses on five social-life expressions:
  • 약속 = plan / appointment / promise
  • 들르다 = to stop by briefly
  • 수다 떨다 = to chat casually
  • 반갑다 = to be glad to see or meet someone
  • 즐겁게 = enjoyably / pleasantly / in a fun way
With these, you can make a full social story: “I had plans, stopped by a bakery, met my friend after a long time, chatted for ages, and spent the afternoon happily.” Very café-core. Very Korean-diary friendly. ☕✨

🎨 The Core Meeting Friends Family

📅 약속 — plan / appointment / promise

약속 can mean “promise,” but in everyday conversation it often means a scheduled plan or appointment.
  • 오늘 저녁에 친구와 약속이 있어요. (I have plans with a friend this evening.) 🌙
  • 다음 주 토요일로 약속을 잡았어요. (We made plans for next Saturday.) 📆
  • 중요한 약속이라서 늦으면 안 돼요. (It is an important appointment, so I must not be late.) ⏰
Useful chunks:
  • 약속이 있다 = to have plans/an appointment
  • 약속을 잡다 = to make plans / schedule an appointment
  • 약속을 지키다 = to keep a promise/an appointment
  • 약속에 늦다 = to be late for plans/an appointment

🏪 들르다 — to stop by briefly

Use 들르다 when the visit is short or on the way somewhere.
  • 카페에 가기 전에 서점에 잠깐 들렀어요. (I briefly stopped by a bookstore before going to the café.) 📚
  • 퇴근길에 편의점에 들러서 음료수를 샀어요. (I stopped by a convenience store on my way home from work and bought a drink.) 🥤
  • 시간 있으면 우리 집에 잠깐 들러요. (If you have time, stop by my place briefly.) 🏠
Important feel:
  • 가다 = to go
  • 방문하다 = to visit, often more formal
  • 들르다 = to stop by briefly

🗣️ 수다 떨다 — to chat casually

수다 떨다 means to chat casually, often for fun. It is warm and friendly, but too casual for very formal reports.
  • 친구와 카페에서 한참 수다를 떨었어요. (I chatted with my friend at a café for quite a while.) ☕
  • 오랜만에 만나서 수다를 많이 떨었어요. (We met after a long time and chatted a lot.) 🗣️
  • 커피를 마시면서 즐겁게 수다를 떨었어요. (We chatted happily while drinking coffee.) ☕
Spacing note:
  • Write 수다 떨다 with a space.
  • The noun-object form 수다를 떨다 is also common.

😊 반갑다 — to be glad to see/meet someone

반갑다 describes the happy feeling of seeing or meeting someone.
  • 만나서 반가워요. (Nice to meet you.) 😊
  • 처음 뵙겠습니다. 만나서 반갑습니다. (How do you do? Nice to meet you.) 🙇
  • 오랜만에 친구를 만나서 정말 반가웠어요. (I was really glad to see my friend after a long time.) 🤗
Form reminder:
  • 반갑다반가워요 / 반갑습니다 / 반가웠어요
  • Not 반갑아요.

🎉 즐겁게 — enjoyably / pleasantly

즐겁게 is the adverb form of 즐겁다. It describes how an action happens.
  • 친구들과 주말을 즐겁게 보냈어요. (I spent the weekend enjoyably with friends.) 🌤️
  • 우리는 음악을 들으면서 즐겁게 이야기했어요. (We talked happily while listening to music.) 🎶
  • 생일 파티에서 모두 즐겁게 놀았어요. (Everyone had fun at the birthday party.) 🎂
Before a noun, use 즐거운:
  • 즐거운 시간 = enjoyable time
  • 즐겁게 시간을 보냈어요 = spent time enjoyably

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

1. Plan + place

오늘 저녁에 친구와 약속이 있어서 홍대에 가요.
(I have plans with a friend this evening, so I am going to Hongdae.) 🌆
  • 친구와 = with a friend
  • 약속이 있다 = to have plans
  • -아서/어서 gives the reason.

2. Quick stop on the way

약속 장소에 가는 길에 꽃집에 잠깐 들렀어요.
(I briefly stopped by a flower shop on the way to the meeting place.) 💐
  • 약속 장소 = meeting place
  • 가는 길에 = on the way there
  • 잠깐 = briefly / for a moment

3. Warm reunion

오랜만에 만나서 반가웠고, 카페에서 즐겁게 수다를 떨었어요.
(I was glad to meet after a long time, and we chatted happily at a café.) ☕
  • 오랜만에 = after a long time
  • 반가웠고 = was glad and...
  • 즐겁게 수다를 떨다 = chat enjoyably

🧩 General Formation Rule

These expressions become natural when paired with the right social chunks:
  • 친구와 약속이 있다 = to have plans with a friend
  • 약속을 잡다 = to make plans
  • 장소에 잠깐 들르다 = to stop by a place briefly
  • 가는 길에 들르다 = to stop by on the way there
  • 친구와 수다를 떨다 = to chat casually with a friend
  • 만나서 반갑다 = to be glad to meet/see someone
  • 즐겁게 보내다/이야기하다/놀다 = spend/talk/play enjoyably

Tiny form corner 🧠

  • 들르다들러요, 들렀어요, 들를 거예요
  • 반갑다반가워요, 반갑습니다, 반가웠어요
  • 즐겁다즐거워요, 즐거웠어요, 즐겁게, 즐거운 시간

📚 Cross-check note

The meanings, spacing, and usage patterns for 약속, 들르다, 수다 떨다, 반갑다, and 즐겁게 were cross-checked against Korean reference usage from korean.go.kr. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • 약속 = plan, appointment, promise; broad and everyday.
  • 계획 = plan; more general, not necessarily with another person.
  • 들르다 = stop by briefly.
  • 방문하다 = visit; more formal or purposeful.
  • 수다 떨다 = chat casually; friendly and informal.
  • 대화하다 = converse; more neutral/formal.
  • 반갑다 = glad to meet/see.
  • 기쁘다 = glad/happy more generally.
  • 즐겁게 = enjoyably; adverb.
  • 재미있게 = funnily/interestingly/enjoyably; often focuses more on fun or interest.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 약속 있어요 = always “I have a promise” → ✅ often means “I have plans/an appointment.” 📅
  • 카페에 오래 들렀어요 → ✅ 카페에 오래 있었어요 (Use 들르다 for a brief stop.) ☕
  • 반갑아요 → ✅ 반가워요 (Correct polite form of 반갑다.) 😊
  • 즐겁게 시간 → ✅ 즐거운 시간 or 즐겁게 시간을 보냈어요 (Use 즐거운 before nouns.) 🎉
  • ❌ using 수다 떨다 in a formal business report → ✅ use 대화하다 or 이야기를 나누다 instead. 🗂️

You can now tell a friend-meetup story with all the good details: plans made, quick stops made, chatting accomplished, reunion joy felt, and the whole day spent enjoyably. Social Korean unlocked. ☕🤝🎉
