🌈 The Big Picture

Keeping track of your 일정 (schedule) means regularly 확인 (checking) it, noticing when things 겹치다 (overlap), and 조정하다 (adjusting) plans 미리 (in advance) so you're not caught off guard. This lesson covers the essential vocabulary for managing your calendar in Korean.

🎨 The Core Calendar Family

1. 일정 — schedule 📅
The standard word for a schedule or itinerary. "일정을 확인하다" means "to check the schedule."
Note: Compare with the loanword 스케줄, which is more casual/trendy.
2. 확인 — confirmation / checking ✅
Refers to checking or confirming something. "일정을 확인해요" means "I'll check the schedule."
Note: Compare with the loanword 체크하다, which is more casual.
3. 겹치다 — to overlap 🔀
Describes two things happening at the same time. "약속이 겹쳤어요" means "The appointments overlapped."
Note: Vowel contraction — 겹치다 → 겹쳐요 (치 + 어 → 쳐), not 겹치어요.
4. 미리 — in advance / beforehand ⏳
An adverb describing doing something ahead of time. "미리 확인하다" means "to check in advance."
Note: Compare with 먼저 (first, in sequence) — 미리 is about timing relative to an event, 먼저 is about order.
5. 조정하다 — to adjust / coordinate ⚙️
Describes making careful adjustments, often to a schedule. "일정을 조정하다" means "to adjust the schedule."
Note: Compare with 바꾸다 (to change), which is more general and less precise.

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

1. 다음 주 일정을 확인해 봤어요.
I checked next week's schedule.
→ 다음 주 일정을 (next week's schedule) + 확인해 봤어요 (I tried checking).
2. 두 약속이 겹쳐서 하나를 옮겨야 해요.
The two appointments overlap, so I need to move one.
→ 두 약속이 겹쳐서 (because the two appointments overlap) + 하나를 옮겨야 해요 (I need to move one).
3. 미리 일정을 조정해 두면 편해요.
It's convenient if you adjust your schedule in advance.
→ 미리 일정을 조정해 두면 (if you adjust the schedule in advance) + 편해요 (it's convenient).

🧩 General Formation Rule

  • 일정 (schedule) → combines with particles: 일정을 확인하다 (to check the schedule), 일정을 잡다 (to set a schedule)
  • 확인하다 (to check/confirm) → 확인해요 (polite present), 확인했어요 (past), 확인해 보다 (to try checking)
  • 겹치다 (to overlap) → 겹쳐요 (polite present, ㅣ+ㅓ contraction), 겹쳤어요 (past), 겹치는 (attributive)
  • 미리 (in advance) → adverb, often paired with verbs like 확인하다, 조정하다, 준비하다
  • 조정하다 (to adjust/coordinate) → 조정해요 (polite present), 조정했어요 (past), 조정해 두다 (to adjust ahead of time)

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • 일정 vs 스케줄 — 일정 is the standard Korean word for "schedule"; 스케줄 is a loanword that sounds more casual or trendy.
  • 확인 vs 체크 — 확인하다 is the standard verb for "to check/confirm"; 체크하다 is a casual loanword often used informally.
  • 겹치다 vs 충돌하다 — 겹치다 means "to overlap" in an everyday sense; 충돌하다 means "to clash/conflict," which sounds more serious or dramatic.
  • 미리 vs 먼저 — 미리 describes doing something ahead of time relative to an event; 먼저 describes order/sequence ("first").
  • 조정하다 vs 바꾸다 — 조정하다 implies a careful, fine-tuned adjustment; 바꾸다 is a general word for "to change."

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • ❌ 일정이 충돌했어요 (for a minor everyday overlap) → ✅ 겹치다 sounds more natural for everyday overlaps — save 충돌하다 for serious conflicts.
  • ❌ 겹치어요 → ✅ 겹쳐요 — remember the vowel contraction (치 + 어 → 쳐).
  • ❌ 먼저 확인할게요 (when you mean "in advance") → ✅ 미리 확인할게요 — 미리 is about timing, 먼저 is about order.
  • ❌ 일정을 바꿨어요 (when describing a careful coordination) → ✅ 일정을 조정했어요 sounds more precise for thoughtful adjustments.
  • ❌ 일정 확인해요 (missing particle in formal writing) → ✅ 일정을 확인해요 — keep the object particle 을/를 in careful speech and writing.

With these words, your calendar will run smoothly — 일정 관리 잘하세요! 📅
