🌈 The Big Picture

Korean makes fine distinctions in how you talk about learning. You don't just "learn" — you take a course (수강하다), learn something new (배우다), or internalise it through repeated practice (익히다). These three verbs cover completely different stages, and mixing them up can sound unnatural.
차근차근 and 목표 tie it all together: the pace and the destination. Together these five words give you everything you need to talk about your learning journey in natural, nuanced Korean.

🎨 The Core Learning Family

1. 수강 — taking a course/class 📋
The act of formally enrolling in and attending a class or lecture. 수강하다 = to take a course. 수강 신청 = course registration. Used for formal academic or professional classes — not casual learning from a friend.
2. 배우다 — to learn (broadly) 📚
The general-purpose learning verb. Learning a language, skill, lesson from experience, or new information. 한국어를 배우다 = to learn Korean. 요리를 배우다 = to learn cooking. The widest scope of the three learning verbs.
3. 익히다 — to internalise, master through practice 🔄
More specific than 배우다 — implies repeated practice until something becomes second nature. 표현을 익히다 = to internalise expressions. 발음을 익히다 = to master pronunciation. The "making it stick" verb.
4. 차근차근 — step by step, methodically, without rushing 🪜
An adverb describing patient, organised progress. 차근차근 공부하다 = to study step by step. 차근차근 설명하다 = to explain methodically. Always positive — never implies slowness in a negative sense.
5. 목표 — goal, target 🎯
The noun for a learning or personal goal. Key verb pairings: 목표를 세우다 = to set a goal, 목표를 달성하다 = to achieve a goal, 목표를 이루다 = to accomplish a goal.
