Getting lost and finding your way in Korean requires more than knowing left and right. These five words give you the vocabulary for the full experience: admitting you have no sense of direction (길치), describing when you're wandering lost (헤매다), asking about shortcuts (지름길), getting precise answers (정확히), and knowing whether something is within reach (가깝다).

These are deeply natural, frequently used words — you'll hear 길치예요 in self-deprecating conversation, 헤매고 있어요 when asking for help, and 여기서 가까워요? constantly when navigating.

🎨 The Core Direction-Finding Family

1. 길치 — someone with no sense of direction 🗺️

A fun, commonly used noun. 길치예요 = I have no sense of direction. 심한 길치 = a severe case of directional hopelessness. Always used self-deprecatingly or affectionately about others.

2. 헤매다 — to wander, to get lost, to struggle to find 🌀

Used when someone is going around in circles trying to find something. 길을 헤매다 = to wander lost. 오래 헤맸어요 = I wandered around for a long time.

3. 지름길 — shortcut 🛤️

지름 = shortcut/direct path, 길 = road/way. 지름길이 있어요? = Is there a shortcut? 지름길로 가다 = to go via the shortcut.

4. 정확히 — exactly, precisely, accurately 📍

An adverb meaning "with precision." 정확히 어디예요? = Where exactly is it? 정확히 말하면 = to be precise / strictly speaking.

5. 가깝다 — to be close/near 📏

A ㅂ-irregular adjective. 여기서 가까워요? = Is it close from here? 가까운 곳 = a nearby place. Opposite: 멀다 = to be far.

❌ 지름길을 해요 → ✅ 지름길로 가요 — 지름길 needs 로 가다 (to go via). You travel via a shortcut, you don't "do" one.

❌ 정확히예요 (as a predicate) → ✅ 정확히 말하면 / 정확히 여기예요 — 정확히 is an adverb; it modifies verbs and other adjectives, not stands alone.
