English uses "excited" for almost everything. Korean doesn't. The word you choose tells your listener exactly what kind of excitement you mean — fluttery anticipation before a first day, heart-pumping energy at a concert, overwhelming emotion at an achievement, or simple positive expectation before a trip.

Getting these five right is the difference between sounding fluent and sounding translated.

1. 기대 — expectation, anticipation, looking forward to 🔭

기대되다 = to be looked forward to (natural in speech). 기대하다 = to expect/anticipate (often needs an object). 내일 여행이 기대돼요 = I'm looking forward to tomorrow's trip. Pattern: N이/가 기대되다.

2. 설레다 — fluttery, heart-racing excited 💓

The heart-flutter feeling. First day of work, meeting someone you like, opening something new. 마음이 설레요 = my heart flutters. 생각만 해도 설레요 = I get excited just thinking about it. ≠ 기대되다: 설레다 is more emotional and physical.

3. 신나다 — energetically excited, having fun ⚡

High energy, upbeat. Music, games, parties, trips. 신나요 = it's exciting/fun. 신나게 뛰다 = to run excitedly. ⚠️ Don't use for serious/touching moments — 어머니의 편지를 읽고 신났어요 sounds wrong.

4. 벅차다 — overwhelmingly emotional, heart full to bursting 🌟

The deepest emotion on this list. Achievement, gratitude, moving moments. 가슴이 벅찼어요 = my heart was overwhelmed. 말로 표현할 수 없을 만큼 벅찼어요 = overwhelmed beyond words.

5. 기다려지다 — can't wait for, anticipating eagerly ⏳

방학이 기다려져요 = I can't wait for vacation. 다음 회가 기다려져요 = I can't wait for the next episode. Pattern: N이/가 기다려지다.
