🌈 The Big Picture

Korean gratitude is more nuanced than just saying "thank you." It's about register, sincerity, and specificity. The most natural Korean gratitude tells the other person what they did, how it helped, and how you feel — not just the fact that you're thankful.

These five words give you the vocabulary for the full emotional arc: the feeling itself (고맙다), the sincerity behind it (진심), the cause (덕분에), the warmth of the exchange (따뜻하다), and the act of expressing it (표현하다).

🎨 The Core Gratitude Family

1. 고맙다 — to be thankful, grateful 💛

The adjective base. Register choices:

고마워 = casual (close friends, younger people)

고마워요 = polite, friendly

고맙습니다 = formal, respectful

감사합니다 = formal (slightly more official feel)

Pattern: -아/어 줘서 고마워요 = thank you for doing (something) for me.

2. 진심 — sincerity, true heart 🫀

진심으로 = sincerely. 진심으로 고마워요 = I sincerely thank you. Used when the gratitude is meaningful — not for tiny everyday favours.

3. 덕분에 — thanks to (positive result) 🌟

Used when someone/something caused a good outcome. 선생님 덕분에 = thanks to my teacher. Pattern: Noun + 덕분에 or Verb-(으)ㄴ/는 덕분에.

⚠️ 덕분에 = positive results only. For negative results use 때문에.

4. 따뜻하다 — warm (emotionally) 🌸

In gratitude contexts: 따뜻한 말 = kind words, 따뜻한 마음 = warm heart, 따뜻하게 대하다 = to treat warmly. This is emotional warmth, not physical temperature.

5. 표현하다 — to express 🗣️

감사를 표현하다 = to express gratitude. 마음을 표현하다 = to express one's feelings. 말로 표현하기 어렵다 = hard to express in words.

고마운 마음을 제대로 표현하지 못했어요.

고맙다 → ㅂ-irregular: 고마워요 / 고마웠어요 / 고마운 마음 / 고마워서

진심으로 → adverb, no conjugation

덕분에 → comes after noun or verb clause: N+덕분에 / V-(으)ㄴ 덕분에

따뜻하다 → 하다 adjective: 따뜻해요 / 따뜻한 말 / 따뜻하게 대하다

표현하다 → regular 하다: 표현해요 / 표현했어요 / 표현할 수 없어요

고맙다 ≈ 감사하다 — 감사하다 = slightly more formal/Sino-Korean feel; 고맙다 = slightly warmer/native Korean feel. Both correct.

진심으로 ≈ 마음속으로 — 마음속으로 = in one's heart (private); 진심으로 = sincerely (expressed outwardly)

덕분에 ≈ 덕택에 — 덕택에 = thanks to (more formal/written); 덕분에 = everyday speech

❌ 고맙어요 → ✅ 고마워요 — ㅂ-irregular: 고맙 + 아요 = 고마워요 (NOT 고맙어요).

❌ 비 덕분에 늦었어요 → ✅ 비 때문에 늦었어요 — 덕분에 = positive results only. Rain causing lateness = negative = 때문에.

❌ 고마워 (to teacher/boss) → ✅ 감사합니다 / 고맙습니다 — 고마워 is casual; use formal register with superiors.

❌ 진심으로 감사합니다 (for tiny favour) → ✅ 감사합니다 / 고마워요 — 진심으로 is for meaningful gratitude; overusing it makes it lose weight.

❌ 따뜻한 가격 → ✅ 따뜻한 말/마음/사람 — 따뜻하다 describes emotional warmth, not objects like prices.
