Korean comparison vocabulary is precise about whether you're measuring degrees (훨씬), finding an unexpected opposite (오히려), noting similarity (비슷하게), making the comparison itself (비교), or describing the gap (차이). English often collapses all of these into "more" or "different" — Korean keeps them distinct.

🎨 The Core Expressing Comparisons Family

1. 비교 — comparison 📊

비교하다 = to compare. 비교해 보다 = to try comparing. 비교가 안 돼요 = there's no comparison. 비교 대상 = comparison target/benchmark.

2. 훨씬 — much more, by far 🚀

An adverb. 훨씬 낫다 = much better. 훨씬 어렵다 = much harder. 훨씬 더 = even much more. Always used with comparatives — never alone.

3. 오히려 — on the contrary, rather, actually (contrary to expectation) 🔄

Used when the result is the opposite of what was expected. 쉬었더니 오히려 더 피곤해요 = I rested but actually I'm even more tired. 작아 보이지만 오히려 넓어요 = It looks small but it's actually bigger.

4. 비슷하게 — similarly, in a similar way 〰️

비슷하게 생각하다 = to think similarly. 비슷하게 행동하다 = to act similarly. From 비슷하다 (to be similar). ≠ 똑같이 (exactly the same).

5. 차이 — difference, gap 📏

차이가 있다/없다 = there is/is no difference. 차이가 크다/작다 = the difference is big/small. 큰 차이가 없어요 = there's not much of a difference.

훨씬 → adverb: before comparative — 훨씬 + adjective/adverb (더 is optional)

비슷하게 → adverb: before verbs — 비슷하게 생각하다 / 비슷하게 하다

❌ 오히려 for simple negatives → ✅ 오히려 = when the result is the OPPOSITE of expectation, not just when something is negative.

❌ 비슷하게 = 똑같이 → ✅ 비슷하게 = similarly (close but not identical); 똑같이 = exactly the same.

❌ 차이를 있어요 → ✅ 차이가 있어요 — 차이 takes 이/가, not 를/을.
