- ๐ ํจ์ฌ = by far, much more โ the intensifier that makes comparisons land harder

๐ The Big Picture
Korean comparison vocabulary is precise about whether you're measuring degrees (ํจ์ฌ), finding an unexpected opposite (์คํ๋ ค), noting similarity (๋น์ทํ๊ฒ), making the comparison itself (๋น๊ต), or describing the gap (์ฐจ์ด). English often collapses all of these into "more" or "different" โ Korean keeps them distinct.
๐จ The Core Expressing Comparisons Family
1. ๋น๊ต โ comparison ๐
๋น๊ตํ๋ค = to compare. ๋น๊ตํด ๋ณด๋ค = to try comparing. ๋น๊ต๊ฐ ์ ๋ผ์ = there's no comparison. ๋น๊ต ๋์ = comparison target/benchmark.
2. ํจ์ฌ โ much more, by far ๐
An adverb. ํจ์ฌ ๋ซ๋ค = much better. ํจ์ฌ ์ด๋ ต๋ค = much harder. ํจ์ฌ ๋ = even much more. Always used with comparatives โ never alone.
3. ์คํ๋ ค โ on the contrary, rather, actually (contrary to expectation) ๐
Used when the result is the opposite of what was expected. ์ฌ์๋๋ ์คํ๋ ค ๋ ํผ๊ณคํด์ = I rested but actually I'm even more tired. ์์ ๋ณด์ด์ง๋ง ์คํ๋ ค ๋์ด์ = It looks small but it's actually bigger.
4. ๋น์ทํ๊ฒ โ similarly, in a similar way ใฐ๏ธ
๋น์ทํ๊ฒ ์๊ฐํ๋ค = to think similarly. ๋น์ทํ๊ฒ ํ๋ํ๋ค = to act similarly. From ๋น์ทํ๋ค (to be similar). โ ๋๊ฐ์ด (exactly the same).
5. ์ฐจ์ด โ difference, gap ๐
์ฐจ์ด๊ฐ ์๋ค/์๋ค = there is/is no difference. ์ฐจ์ด๊ฐ ํฌ๋ค/์๋ค = the difference is big/small. ํฐ ์ฐจ์ด๊ฐ ์์ด์ = there's not much of a difference.

๐ช Synonym Alert
- ๋น๊ต โ ๋์กฐ โ ๋์กฐ = contrast (highlighting differences, slightly more literary); ๋น๊ต = comparison (general)
- ํจ์ฌ โ ๋ง์ด โ ๋ง์ด = a lot; ํจ์ฌ = by far/much more (specifically for degree comparisons)
- ์คํ๋ ค โ ๋๋ฆฌ์ด โ ๋๋ฆฌ์ด = on the contrary (slightly more formal/literary); ์คํ๋ ค = everyday
- ๋น์ทํ๊ฒ โ ๋ง์ฐฌ๊ฐ์ง๋ก โ ๋ง์ฐฌ๊ฐ์ง๋ก = likewise/in the same way; ๋น์ทํ๊ฒ = similarly (not exactly the same)

โ ๏ธ Pitfalls to Dodge
โ ํจ์ฌ ์ข์์ (without a comparison point) โ โ
์ด๊ฒ ์ ๊ฒ๋ณด๋ค ํจ์ฌ ์ข์์ โ ํจ์ฌ needs a comparison context; it describes a degree of difference.
โ ์คํ๋ ค for simple negatives โ โ
์คํ๋ ค = when the result is the OPPOSITE of expectation, not just when something is negative.
โ ๋น์ทํ๊ฒ = ๋๊ฐ์ด โ โ
๋น์ทํ๊ฒ = similarly (close but not identical); ๋๊ฐ์ด = exactly the same.
โ ์ฐจ์ด๋ฅผ ์์ด์ โ โ
์ฐจ์ด๊ฐ ์์ด์ โ ์ฐจ์ด takes ์ด/๊ฐ, not ๋ฅผ/์.
