When Koreans describe someone's energy and vibe, they reach for these five words. 밝다 and 차분하다 are the two poles. 긍정적 wraps around both as a positive framing. 의외로 appears when first impressions are wrong. And 성격 is the container that holds it all.
These words are essential for Korean social conversation — talking about friends, colleagues, first dates, new coworkers, or yourself.

1. 밝다 — bright, cheerful, upbeat ☀️
성격이 밝다 = has a cheerful personality. 밝은 사람 = an upbeat person. 분위기가 밝아지다 = the atmosphere brightens. ⚠️ Irregular: 밝다 → 밝아요 / 밝은 / 밝게.
2. 차분하다 — calm, composed, steady 🌊
차분한 성격 = a calm personality. 차분하게 말하다 = to speak calmly. 분위기가 차분해지다 = the atmosphere becomes calm. Always positive — composed and collected, not dull.
3. 긍정적 — positive (mindset/outlook) 🌱
긍정적인 사람 = a positive person. 긍정적으로 생각하다 = to think positively. 긍정적인 에너지 = positive energy. ≠ 긍정하다 (to affirm/agree) — 긍정적이다 = to have a positive outlook.
4. 의외로 — surprisingly, contrary to expectations 😮
의외로 친절해요 = surprisingly they're kind. 의외로 차분해요 = they're surprisingly calm (looked different). Always introduces a contrast between appearance/expectation and reality.
5. 성격 — personality, character 💎
성격이 좋다 = has a good personality. 성격이 밝다 = has a cheerful personality. 성격이 맞다 = personalities are compatible. The container for all personality descriptions.
