π The Big Picture
Food in Korea isn't just about taste β the λμ (smell/scent) is just as important to the experience. You might describe a bakery's aroma as ν₯κΈνλ€ (fragrant) or a bowl of stew as κ³ μνλ€ (nutty/savory). Sometimes a smell νΌμ§λ€ (spreads) through a room μμνκ² (subtly), filling the air with warmth. This lesson covers the essential vocabulary for describing food scents in vivid, natural Korean.
π¨ The Core Food Scent Family
1. λμ β smell / scent π
A neutral word for "smell" β can be good or bad depending on context. "λμκ° λλ€" means "there's a smell" and "λμλ₯Ό 맑λ€" means "to smell something."
Note: For a specifically pleasant scent, Koreans often use ν₯ instead.
2. ν₯κΈνλ€ β to be fragrant / aromatic πΈ
Describes a pleasant, fresh fragrance β often floral, fruity, or herbal. "ν₯κΈν κ½ν₯κΈ°" means "a fragrant floral scent."
Note: Commonly used for flowers, fruit, tea, and bakery smells.
3. κ³ μνλ€ β to be nutty / savory π₯
Describes a rich, toasty, savory smell or taste β like sesame oil, roasted nuts, or popcorn. "κ³ μν μ°ΈκΈ°λ¦ λμ" means "a nutty sesame oil smell."
Note: This is a very common and beloved word in Korean food culture!
4. μμνκ² β subtly / gently / faintly π―οΈ
An adverb describing something soft, gentle, and not overpowering β often used for light, scent, or sound. "μμνκ² νΌμ§λ€" means "to spread subtly."
Note: From μμνλ€ (to be subtle/faint) + κ² (adverb ending).
5. νΌμ§λ€ β to spread / diffuse π¨
Describes something (a smell, sound, news, etc.) spreading outward. "λμκ° νΌμ§λ€" means "the smell spreads."
Note: Pairs naturally with λμκ°, ν₯μ΄, or μλ¬Έμ΄ (rumor).
π οΈ How They Work in a Sentence
1. λΆμμμ κ³ μν μ°ΈκΈ°λ¦ λμκ° μμνκ² νΌμ‘μ΄μ.
A nutty sesame oil smell spread subtly from the kitchen.
β κ³ μν (nutty, attributive) modifies λμ (smell); μμνκ² νΌμ‘μ΄μ (spread subtly) describes how it spread.
2. λΉ΅μ§ μμ μ§λκ°λλ° ν₯κΈν λμκ° λ¬μ΄μ.
As I passed by the bakery, a fragrant smell came.
β ν₯κΈν λμκ° λ¬μ΄μ (a fragrant smell occurred/came) β λλ€ is the verb that pairs with λμ.
3. μ°κ°κ° λμΌλ©΄μ κ³ μν λμκ° μ§μ κ°λ νΌμ‘μ΄μ.
As the stew boiled, a savory smell spread throughout the house.
β λμΌλ©΄μ (while boiling) sets the scene; μ§μ κ°λ νΌμ‘μ΄μ (spread throughout the house) shows the result.
𧩠General Formation Rule
- ν₯κΈνλ€ (to be fragrant) β ν₯κΈν΄μ (polite present), ν₯κΈν (attributive), ν₯κΈν΄μ (because it's fragrant)
- κ³ μνλ€ (to be nutty/savory) β κ³ μν΄μ (polite present), κ³ μν (attributive), κ³ μν΄μ (because it's nutty)
- μμνλ€ (to be subtle/faint) β μμν΄μ (polite present), μμν (attributive), μμνκ² (adverb, "subtly")
- νΌμ§λ€ (to spread) β νΌμ Έμ (polite present), νΌμ§ (attributive, "spread ___"), νΌμ‘μ΄μ (past)
- λμ (smell) β λμκ° λλ€ (a smell occurs), λμλ₯Ό λ§‘λ€ (to smell something), λμκ° νΌμ§λ€ (the smell spreads)

πͺ Synonym Alert
- λμ vs ν₯ β λμ is a neutral word for "smell" (good or bad); ν₯ specifically refers to a pleasant fragrance or scent.
- ν₯κΈνλ€ vs ν₯κΈ°λ‘λ€ β both mean "fragrant," but ν₯κΈνλ€ is more casual/everyday, while ν₯κΈ°λ‘λ€ sounds more literary or formal.
- κ³ μνλ€ vs ꡬμνλ€ β κ³ μνλ€ describes a nutty, savory smell (like sesame oil or roasted nuts); ꡬμνλ€ describes a deeper, toasty/earthy savory smell (like doenjang or roasted grains).
- μμνκ² vs μ΄μ§ β μμνκ² describes something soft and lingering (like a gentle scent or light); μ΄μ§ simply means "a little" or "slightly" in a general sense.
- νΌμ§λ€ vs νκΈ°λ€ β νΌμ§λ€ means "to spread out" (can apply to smells, news, etc.); νκΈ°λ€ means "to give off/emit," used specifically for smells or auras.
β οΈ Pitfalls to Dodge
- β λμκ° νμ μ’λ€κ³ μκ°νκΈ° β β λμ can be positive or negative β for a clearly pleasant smell, consider ν₯ or ν₯κΈνλ€.
- β κ³ μνλ€ for any good smell β β κ³ μνλ€ specifically describes nutty/savory aromas β use ν₯κΈνλ€ for floral or fruity scents instead.
- β μμνλ€ κ² νΌμ‘μ΄μ β β μμνκ² νΌμ‘μ΄μ β remember the adverb form μμνκ², not μμνλ€ κ².
- β ν₯κΈν΄μ μμμ΄ λ§μμ΄μ (word order) β β μμμ΄ ν₯κΈν΄μ β the subject comes before the descriptive verb.
- β λμλ₯Ό νΌμ Έμ (wrong particle) β β λμκ° νΌμ Έμ β use the subject marker κ°/μ΄ with νΌμ§λ€, not the object marker.
