๐ The Big Picture
When planning a trip, you often need to describe your ๊ฒฝ๋ก (route) โ which places you'll ๊ฑฐ์น๋ค (pass through), where you might ๋ค๋ฅด๋ค (stop by), and whether your destination is ๋ฉ๋ค (far). A good map lets you see all of this ํ๋์ (at a glance). This lesson covers the essential vocabulary for describing a travel route in natural Korean.
๐จ The Core Travel Route Family
1. ๊ฒฝ๋ก โ route / path ๐บ๏ธ
A formal/technical word for a route, often used in navigation apps. "์ต๋จ ๊ฒฝ๋ก" means "the shortest route."
Note: For "road" in everyday speech, ๊ธธ is more common.
2. ๋ค๋ฅด๋ค โ to stop by / drop by ๐
Describes making a brief stop somewhere, often on the way to another place. "ํธ์์ ์ ๋ค๋ฅด๋ค" means "to stop by the convenience store."
Note: Don't confuse with ๋ค๋ฆฌ๋ค (to be heard) โ they sound similar but are different verbs!
3. ๊ฑฐ์น๋ค โ to pass through / go via ๐
Describes passing through a place as part of a route or process. "์ด ๊ฒฝ๋ก๋ ์์ฒญ์ ๊ฑฐ์ณ์" means "This route passes through city hall."
Note: Often used for transfers โ "ํ์น์ญ์ ๊ฑฐ์น๋ค" (to pass through a transfer station).
4. ๋ฉ๋ค โ to be far ๐
Describes distance. "์ฌ๊ธฐ์ ๋ฉ์ด์" means "It's far from here."
Note: ใน-irregular adjective โ the ใน drops before ใด (๋จผ ๊ฑฐ๋ฆฌ = "long distance," attributive form).
5. ํ๋์ โ at a glance ๐
Describes seeing or understanding something instantly, all at once. "ํ๋์ ๋ค์ด์ค๋ค" means "to come into view at a glance."
Note: Literally combines ํ (one) + ๋ (eye) + ์ (at).
๐ ๏ธ How They Work in a Sentence
1. ์ด ๊ฒฝ๋ก๋ก ๊ฐ๋ฉด ์์ฒญ์ ๊ฑฐ์ณ์ ๊ฐ ์ ์์ด์.
If you take this route, you can go via city hall.
โ ๊ฒฝ๋ก๋ก ๊ฐ๋ฉด (if you go by this route) + ๊ฑฐ์ณ์ (passing through) describes the path.
2. ๊ฐ๋ ๊ธธ์ ํธ์์ ์ ์ ๊น ๋ค๋ ์ด์.
On the way, I stopped by the convenience store for a moment.
โ ๊ฐ๋ ๊ธธ์ (on the way) + ์ ๊น ๋ค๋ ์ด์ (stopped by briefly) โ note ๋ค๋ ์ด์, not ๋ค๋ ธ์ด์.
3. ์ง๋๋ฅผ ๋ณด๋๊น ๋ชฉ์ ์ง๊น์ง ๊ฑฐ๋ฆฌ๊ฐ ํ๋์ ๋ค์ด์์ด์.
Looking at the map, I could see the distance to the destination at a glance.
โ ํ๋์ ๋ค์ด์์ด์ (came into view at a glance) describes instant visibility.
๐งฉ General Formation Rule
- ๋ค๋ฅด๋ค (to stop by) โ ๋ค๋ฌ์ (polite present, ์ผ-irregular: ๋ค๋ฅด + ์ด์ โ ๋ค๋ฌ์), ๋ค๋ ์ด์ (past), ๋ค๋ฅธ (attributive)
- ๊ฑฐ์น๋ค (to pass through) โ ๊ฑฐ์ณ์ (polite present), ๊ฑฐ์ณค์ด์ (past), ๊ฑฐ์น (attributive, "the ___ passed through")
- ๋ฉ๋ค (to be far, ใน-irregular) โ ๋ฉ์ด์ (polite present), ๋จผ (attributive โ ใน drops before ใด), ๋ฉ์ด์ (because it's far)
- ๊ฒฝ๋ก (route) โ combines with particles: ๊ฒฝ๋ก๋ฅผ ํ์ธํ๋ค (to check the route), ์ต๋จ ๊ฒฝ๋ก (shortest route)
- ํ๋์ (at a glance) โ adverb phrase, pairs with ๋ณด์ด๋ค, ๋ค์ด์ค๋ค, ์์๋ณด๋ค

๐ช Synonym Alert
- ๊ฒฝ๋ก vs ๊ธธ โ ๊ฒฝ๋ก is more formal/technical, often seen in navigation apps ("์ต๋จ ๊ฒฝ๋ก"); ๊ธธ is the everyday word for "road" or "way."
- ๋ค๋ฅด๋ค vs ๋ฐฉ๋ฌธํ๋ค โ ๋ค๋ฅด๋ค means to stop by briefly, often on the way somewhere; ๋ฐฉ๋ฌธํ๋ค means "to visit," implying a more formal or planned visit.
- ๊ฑฐ์น๋ค vs ์ง๋๊ฐ๋ค โ ๊ฑฐ์น๋ค means to pass through as part of a route or process (often used for transfers); ์ง๋๊ฐ๋ค means to pass by/go past in a more general sense.
- ๋ฉ๋ค vs ๋จ์ด์ ธ ์๋ค โ ๋ฉ๋ค simply means "to be far"; ๋จ์ด์ ธ ์๋ค means "to be located apart," emphasizing separation or position.
- ํ๋์ vs ๋ฐ๋ก โ ํ๋์ means "at a glance" (about perception/visibility); ๋ฐ๋ก means "right away/immediately" (about time).
โ ๏ธ Pitfalls to Dodge
- โ ํธ์์ ์ ๋ค๋ ธ์ด์ โ โ ํธ์์ ์ ๋ค๋ ์ด์ โ ๋ค๋ฅด๋ค (to stop by) becomes ๋ค๋ ์ด์, not ๋ค๋ ธ์ด์ (which is from ๋ค๋ฆฌ๋ค, "to be heard").
- โ ๊ฑฐ์น๋ค = ์ง๋๊ฐ๋ค (used interchangeably) โ โ ๊ฑฐ์น๋ค implies passing through as part of a planned route or process โ use ์ง๋๊ฐ๋ค for simply passing by.
- โ ๋ฉ๋ค์ โ โ ๋ฉ์ด์ โ the ใน stays before ์ด์; it only drops before ใด, ใ , ใ (e.g., ๋จผ, ๋ฉ๋๋ค).
- โ ํ๋์ ๋ณด๋ค (literal, awkward) โ โ ํ๋์ ๋ค์ด์ค๋ค / ํ๋์ ๋ณด์ด๋ค โ these are the natural collocations.
- โ ๊ฒฝ๋ก used for casual "way to the bathroom" โ โ ๊ฒฝ๋ก sounds technical/formal โ for everyday directions, ๊ธธ is more natural.
