Home repairs in Korean follow a predictable sequence: something 갑자기 (suddenly) 고장이 난다 (breaks down), it's 불편하다 (inconvenient), you 연락하다 (contact) someone, and they come to do 수리 (repairs). These five words give you everything you need to handle any Korean home repair situation.

1. 고장 — breakdown, malfunction 🔧

고장이 나다 = to break down/malfunction. 고장이 났어요 = it broke down. 고장난 것 = the broken thing. ≠ 고치다 (to fix) — 고장 is the problem; 수리 is the solution.

2. 수리 — repair 🛠️

수리하다 = to repair. 수리를 받다 = to have something repaired. 수리 기사 = repair technician. 수리비 = repair cost. The professional fix.

3. 연락하다 — to contact, get in touch 📞

관리실에 연락하다 = to contact the management office. 연락을 드리다 = to contact (humble). 연락이 안 돼요 = can't get through. The first step after 고장.

4. 갑자기 — suddenly, all of a sudden ⚡

갑자기 고장이 났어요 = it suddenly broke down. 갑자기 전기가 나갔어요 = the electricity suddenly went out. Always about an unexpected, abrupt occurrence.

5. 불편하다 — inconvenient, uncomfortable 😤

불편한 상황이에요 = it's an inconvenient situation. 많이 불편해요 = it's very inconvenient. 불편을 드려서 죄송합니다 = I'm sorry for the inconvenience (formal apology). Both physical discomfort and functional inconvenience.
