π The Big Picture
From "extremely" to "barely" to "absolutely not" β these five adverbs let you express degree and intensity with precision, including the all-important negative-only adverbs.
π¨ The Core Degree Adverb Family
1. μλ β so very, inherently π
Emphasizes that something is the case to a high degree as an inherent characteristic, often explaining a reason.
- μλ λ°λΉ μ λͺ» κ°μ΄μ. (I was so [inherently] busy that I couldn't go.)
- κ·Έλ μλ λλν΄μ. (He's just inherently very smart.)
Note: Often appears in reason clauses β "since X is so/inherently Y..."
2. κ²¨μ° β barely, only just π
Implies something was achieved with difficulty, or is a smaller amount than expected.
- κ²¨μ° λμ°©νμ΄μ. (I barely made it / just barely arrived.)
- κ²¨μ° μΈ λͺ λ§ μμ΄μ. (Only 3 people came β barely any.)
Note: Suggests difficulty or a result smaller than hoped.
3. λμ ν β absolutely (not), no matter what π
Used with negative predicates to emphasize impossibility despite effort.
- λμ ν μ΄ν΄ν μ μμ΄μ. (I absolutely cannot understand.)
- λμ ν λͺ» νκ² μ΄μ. (I just can't do it, no matter what.)
Note: Must pair with negation β μ/λͺ»/μλ€/-γΉ μ μλ€.
4. λν΅ β (not) at all, no idea π€·ββοΈ
Used with negative predicates, especially about understanding or knowledge.
- λν΅ λͺ¨λ₯΄κ² μ΄μ. (I have no idea at all.)
- λ¬΄μ¨ λ§μΈμ§ λν΅ λͺ¨λ₯΄κ² μ΄μ. (I have no idea what you're talking about.)
Note: Colloquial, best reserved for λͺ¨λ₯΄λ€/μ΄ν΄κ° μ λλ€-type expressions.
5. μλΉν β quite, considerably π
Indicates a notable, significant degree with a neutral-to-formal tone.
- μλΉν μ΄λ €μ μ΄μ. (It was quite difficult.)
- μλΉν λ§μ μ¬λμ΄ μμ΄μ. (Quite a lot of people came.)
Note: More formal/written than λ§μ΄/μμ² β a "considerable" amount without extreme connotation.
π οΈ How They Work in a Sentence
- κ·Έ μνλ μλ μ λͺ ν΄μ λ€λ€ μμμ. (That movie is so famous that everyone knows it.) π β μλ + reason clause.
- μκ°μ κ²¨μ° λ§μΆ° λμ°©νμ΄μ. (I barely made it in time.) π β κ²¨μ° + verb.
- μ€λͺ μ λ€μ΄λ λν΅ λ¬΄μ¨ λ§μΈμ§ λμ ν μ΄ν΄κ° μ λΌμ. (Even after hearing the explanation, I have no idea at all what it means β I absolutely cannot understand it.) π€·ββοΈπ β λν΅ + λμ ν stacked with negation.
𧩠General Formation Rule
- μλ β adverb; μλ + adjective/verb, often with μμ/μ΄μ for reason clauses.
- κ²¨μ° β adverb; κ²¨μ° + verb/number, meaning "barely/only."
- λμ ν β adverb; λμ ν + negative predicate (μ/λͺ»/μλ€/-γΉ μ μλ€).
- λν΅ β adverb; λν΅ + negative predicate (λͺ¨λ₯΄λ€, μ΄ν΄κ° μ λλ€).
- μλΉν β adverb; μλΉν + adjective/verb.

πͺ Synonym Alert
- μλ vs λ무 β μλ emphasizes an inherent, characteristic degree, often used to explain a reason, "since it's inherently so..."; λ무 means "too/very," describing excessive degree in the moment, without necessarily implying it's an inherent trait.
- κ²¨μ° vs κ±°μ β κ²¨μ° means "barely, only just," implying a smaller-than-expected amount or something achieved with difficulty; κ±°μ means "almost," indicating proximity to completion, as in κ±°μ λ€ νμ΄μ ("almost done") β a different concept of closeness versus smallness.
- λμ ν vs μ λ β λμ ν implies "no matter how hard I try, it's impossible," focusing on capability or effort; μ λ means "absolutely/never," a stronger blanket negation often used for prohibitions or absolute statements, not necessarily about effort.
- λν΅ vs μ ν β λν΅ is colloquial and especially common with λͺ¨λ₯΄λ€/μ΄ν΄κ° μ λλ€, understanding-related expressions; μ ν is more general-purpose "not at all," usable with a wider range of negative predicates, like μ ν μ μ’μμ or μ ν λͺ¨λ₯΄λ€.
- μλΉν vs κ½€ β μλΉν is more formal and written, indicating "considerably," often for objective degrees; κ½€ is more casual and spoken, meaning "quite/pretty," with a similar meaning but a less formal register.
β οΈ Pitfalls to Dodge
- β μλ used as a simple intensifier without explaining a reason or cause, as in "μ΄ μμμ΄ μλ λ§μμ΄μ" with no following clause, intending simply "this food is very tasty" β β While grammatically fine, μλ most naturally appears in reason clauses (μλ ~ν΄μ ~); for a simple standalone intensifier, λ무/μ λ§ are more common.
- β κ²¨μ° used to mean "almost completely," as in "κ²¨μ° λ€ λλ¬μ΄μ" intending "it's almost all done" β β κ²¨μ° means "barely/only just," the opposite implication of "almost complete with ease"; for "almost done," use κ±°μ λ€ λλ¬μ΄μ.
- β λμ ν used without a negative predicate, as in "λμ ν ν μ μμ΄μ" intending "I can definitely do it" β β λμ ν must pair with negation, as in λμ ν ~ν μ μμ΄μ/μ λΌμ; it cannot be used in a positive/affirmative sentence.
- β λν΅ used in formal/written contexts or with non-understanding-related negatives, as in "μ΄ λ³΄κ³ μλ λν΅ μ ννμ§ μμμ" intending "this report is not accurate at all" β β λν΅ is colloquial and best reserved for λͺ¨λ₯΄λ€/μ΄ν΄ μ λλ€-type expressions; for general "not at all," use μ ν.
- β μλΉν used in very casual speech among close friends where κ½€ or μ§μ§ would be more natural, as in a text message saying "μλΉν μ겨!" β β μλΉν has a more formal, written register; in casual speech, κ½€/μ§μ§/μμ are more natural.
μλ μ΄λ €μ΄ μΌμ΄λΌ λμ ν λν΅ λͺ¨λ₯΄κ² λ€κ³ μκ°νμ§λ§, κ²¨μ° ν΄κ²°νλλ μλΉν 보λ μμμ΄μ! πππ
