Β
π The Big Picture
Sometimes you need to crank up the volume on what you're saying β explain why something happened by pointing to an extreme degree, ask a frustrated question with extra punch, or state your certainty with confidence. This lesson covers five words that add natural emphasis to everyday Korean: two near-twin intensifiers for "so/by nature," a frustrated question booster, and two flavors of "definitely." Use these to sound more expressive and less flat.
π¨ The Core Emphasis Family
1. μλ β so, to such a degree, by nature πͺ
Expresses that something is true to an extreme or inherent degree β often used to explain a result.
- μ΄ μλΉμ μλ μ λͺ ν΄μ νμ μ€μ΄ κΈΈμ΄μ. (This restaurant is so famous that there's always a long line.)
- μλ λ°λΉ μ μ°λ½μ λͺ» νμ΄μ. (I was so busy that I couldn't get in touch.)
Note: Often pairs with -μμ/μ΄μ (because) to set up an explanation.
2. μλμ β so, to begin with (emphasized variant of μλ) π
The same meaning as μλ, with μ attached for extra emphasis β common in casual speech, often opening a sentence.
- μλμ κ·Έλ° μ¬λμ΄μμ. (He's just like that to begin with.)
- μλμ μΈκΈ°κ° λ§μμ. (It's just super popular to begin with.)
Note: μλ and μλμ are interchangeable; μλμ feels slightly more conversational and often starts a sentence.
3. λλ체 β on earth, the heck (emphatic question word) π€β
Adds strong emphasis to questions β especially ones expressing frustration, confusion, or surprise.
- λλ체 λ¬΄μ¨ μΌμ΄μμ? (What on earth is going on?)
- λλ체 μ κ·Έλμ? (Why on earth are you like that?)
Note: Almost always used in questions, paired with μ, λ, μ΄λ, λꡬ, etc.
4. λΆλͺ
β clearly, definitely (personal conviction) β
An adverb expressing the speaker's own confidence or conviction that something is true.
- 그건 λΆλͺ μ¬μ€μ΄μμ. (That's definitely true.)
- λΆλͺ μ’μμ§ κ±°μμ. (It'll definitely get better.)
Note: Often paired with -γΉ κ±°μμ for confident predictions.
5. νμ€ν β surely, certainly (confirmed certainty) π―
An adverb emphasizing that something is certain β often based on evidence, checking, or confirmation.
- νμ€ν ν¨κ³Όκ° μμ΄μ. (It definitely works.)
- νμ€ν μμλ³΄κ³ μλ € λ릴κ²μ. (I'll check for sure and let you know.)
Note: From νμ€νλ€ (to be certain/sure).
π οΈ How They Work in a Sentence
- μ΄ μλΉμ μλ μ λͺ ν΄μ νμ μ€μ΄ κΈΈμ΄μ. (This restaurant is so famous that there's always a long line.) πͺ β μλ explains the reason behind a result.
- λλ체 μ μ΄λ κ² λ¦μμ΄μ? λΆλͺ μΌμ° μΆλ°νμμμ. (Why on earth are you so late? You definitely left early, didn't you?) π€β β λλ체 voices frustration, λΆλͺ voices confident recall.
- μλμ 볡μ‘ν λ¬Έμ λΌμ λλ체 μ΄λμλΆν° μμν΄μΌ ν μ§ λͺ¨λ₯΄κ² μ§λ§, νμ€ν ν΄κ²°ν λ°©λ²μ΄ μμ κ±°μμ. (It's such a complicated problem to begin with that I have no idea where on earth to start, but there's definitely a way to solve it for sure.) ππ€π― β combines μλμ + λλ체 + νμ€ν.
𧩠General Formation Rule
- μλ / μλμ β adverbs placed before the adjective or verb they emphasize; often followed by -μμ/μ΄μ (because) to set up a reason: μλ ~μμ/μ΄μ.
- λλ체 β adverb placed at the start of (or right before the question word in) a question: λλ체 + μ/λ/μ΄λ/λꡬ.
- λΆλͺ β adverb placed before the verb/adjective; often pairs with -γΉ κ±°μμ for confident predictions: λΆλͺ ~γΉ κ±°μμ.
- νμ€ν β adverb derived from νμ€νλ€ (to be certain), placed before the verb/adjective it emphasizes.

πͺ Synonym Alert
- μλ vs μλμ β Nearly interchangeable; μλμ is the more casual/conversational variant, often opening a sentence, while μλ fits naturally mid-sentence right before the adjective or verb.
- λλ체 vs μ λ§ β μ λ§ means "really/truly," a general intensifier usable in statements or questions; λλ체 specifically intensifies questions, often with a tone of frustration or bewilderment.
- λΆλͺ vs νμ€ν β λΆλͺ expresses the speaker's personal conviction ("I'm sure..."); νμ€ν leans toward certainty backed by evidence, checking, or confirmation ("for sure, after verifying...").
- μλ vs λ무 β λ무 means "too/so," often implying excess (frequently negative); μλ emphasizes an inherent or extreme degree as a reason for something, often neutral or even positive.
- λλ체 vs λ체 β λ체 is a slightly softer, shorter form of λλ체 with the same meaning; λλ체 is more emphatic and more common in spoken language.
β οΈ Pitfalls to Dodge
- β μλ used without any explanatory clause β β μλ usually sets up a reason: μλ ~ν΄μ (because it's so ~...) β using it completely alone can feel incomplete.
- β λλ체 used in a plain statement, not a question β β λλ체 is reserved for questions; for emphasis in statements, use μ λ§ or μ§μ§.
- β λΆλͺ used when you've actually verified something β β If you've confirmed something through checking, νμ€ν fits better than λΆλͺ (which leans on personal conviction).
- β νμ€ν used for a vague gut feeling β β νμ€ν implies certainty based on checking; for a gut feeling without proof, use λΆλͺ or μ무λλ.
- β μλμ used mid-sentence exactly like μλ without it sounding off β β Both can work mid-sentence, but μλμ sounds most natural opening a sentence or clause.
