๐ŸŽฏ Big Picture

Giving and understanding compliments is one of the most rewarding parts of speaking Korean! These five adjectives let you describe people, places, animals, and objects โ€” and they cover three different conjugation patterns, so this lesson is also great grammar practice.

๐Ÿ“– Core Vocabulary Family

1. ์˜ˆ์˜๋‹ค (pretty)

Describes something visually pretty or attractive โ€” flowers, clothes, faces, scenery, etc.
  • ์ด ๊ฝƒ์ด ์ •๋ง ์˜ˆ๋ป์š”. (This flower is really pretty.)
  • ๊ทธ ์˜ท์ด ๋„ˆํ•œํ…Œ ์˜ˆ๋ป ๋ณด์—ฌ์š”. (Those clothes look pretty on you.)
Grammar note: ์˜ˆ์˜๋‹ค is a ใ…ก-irregular adjective. Drop the ใ…ก and add ์–ด (since the syllable before ใ…ก is ์˜ˆ, not ์•„/์˜ค): ์˜ˆ์˜ โ†’ ์˜ˆ๋ป์š”.

2. ๋ฉ‹์žˆ๋‹ค (cool / stylish / awesome)

Describes someone or something impressive, stylish, or admirable โ€” often for people's style, actions, or things.
  • ์ € ๊ฐ€์ˆ˜๋Š” ์ •๋ง ๋ฉ‹์žˆ์–ด์š”. (That singer is really cool.)
  • ๊ทธ ์ž๋™์ฐจ ๋””์ž์ธ์ด ๋ฉ‹์žˆ์–ด์š”. (That car's design is cool.)
Grammar note: ๋ฉ‹์žˆ๋‹ค is regular โ€” it ends in ์žˆ๋‹ค, so just add ์–ด์š”: ๋ฉ‹์žˆ + ์–ด์š” โ†’ ๋ฉ‹์žˆ์–ด์š”.

3. ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ต๋‹ค (beautiful)

Describes something with deep, elegant beauty โ€” often scenery, art, music, or more formal/poetic contexts.
  • ํ•œ๊ฐ•์˜ ์•ผ๊ฒฝ์ด ์ •๋ง ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ค์›Œ์š”. (The night view of the Han River is really beautiful.)
  • ์ด ๋…ธ๋ž˜๋Š” ๊ฐ€์‚ฌ๊ฐ€ ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ค์›Œ์š”. (This song's lyrics are beautiful.)
Grammar note: ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ต๋‹ค is a ใ…‚-irregular adjective: ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ต + ์–ด์š” โ†’ ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ค์›Œ์š” (ใ…‚ โ†’ ์šฐ + ์–ด์š”).

4. ๊ท€์—ฝ๋‹ค (cute)

Describes something adorable or endearing โ€” babies, animals, small objects, cute behavior.
  • ์ด ๊ฐ•์•„์ง€๋Š” ๋„ˆ๋ฌด ๊ท€์—ฌ์›Œ์š”. (This puppy is so cute.)
  • ๋™์ƒ์ด ์›ƒ์„ ๋•Œ ์ •๋ง ๊ท€์—ฌ์›Œ์š”. (My younger sibling is really cute when they smile.)
Grammar note: ๊ท€์—ฝ๋‹ค is also ใ…‚-irregular: ๊ท€์—ฝ + ์–ด์š” โ†’ ๊ท€์—ฌ์›Œ์š”.

5. ์ž˜์ƒ๊ธฐ๋‹ค (handsome)

Describes someone (usually a man) as handsome or good-looking. Unlike the other words here, ์ž˜์ƒ๊ธฐ๋‹ค is normally used in its past-tense form even when describing the present, because it describes a fixed trait someone "was born with."
  • ์ € ๋ฐฐ์šฐ๋Š” ์ •๋ง ์ž˜์ƒ๊ฒผ์–ด์š”. (That actor is really handsome.)
  • ์ œ ์นœ๊ตฌ ๋‚จ์ž์นœ๊ตฌ๋Š” ์ž˜์ƒ๊ฒผ์–ด์š”. (My friend's boyfriend is handsome.)
Grammar note: Use ์ž˜์ƒ๊ฒผ์–ด์š” (past tense form) to describe someone's current appearance โ€” saying ์ž˜์ƒ๊ฒจ์š” sounds unnatural to most speakers.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ How They Work in a Sentence

  1. ๊ทธ ๋ฐฐ์šฐ๋Š” ๋ฉ‹์žˆ๊ณ  ์ž˜์ƒ๊ฒผ์–ด์„œ ์ธ๊ธฐ๊ฐ€ ๋งŽ์•„์š”. (That actor is cool and handsome, so he's very popular.)
  1. ์ด ๊ณต์›์€ ๊ฝƒ๋„ ์˜ˆ์˜๊ณ  ํ’๊ฒฝ๋„ ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ค์›Œ์š”. (This park has pretty flowers and a beautiful view.)
  1. ์ƒˆ๋กœ ์‚ฐ ๊ฐ•์•„์ง€๊ฐ€ ๋„ˆ๋ฌด ๊ท€์—ฌ์›Œ์„œ ์‚ฌ์ง„์„ ๋งŽ์ด ์ฐ์—ˆ์–ด์š”. (My newly-bought puppy is so cute that I took a lot of pictures.)

๐Ÿงฑ General Formation Rule

  • ์˜ˆ์˜๋‹ค is ใ…ก-irregular: drop ใ…ก, then add ์•„/์–ด based on the preceding vowel โ€” ์˜ˆ์˜ โ†’ ์˜ˆ๋ป์š”.
  • ๋ฉ‹์žˆ๋‹ค is regular: stem + ์–ด์š” โ†’ ๋ฉ‹์žˆ์–ด์š” (already ends in ์žˆ๋‹ค).
  • ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ต๋‹ค and ๊ท€์—ฝ๋‹ค are ใ…‚-irregular: ใ…‚ โ†’ ์šฐ + ์–ด์š” โ†’ ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ค์›Œ์š”, ๊ท€์—ฌ์›Œ์š”.
  • ์ž˜์ƒ๊ธฐ๋‹ค is normally used as ์ž˜์ƒ๊ฒผ์–ด์š”/์ž˜์ƒ๊ธด (past tense / modifier) even for present description โ€” its opposite, ๋ชป์ƒ๊ธฐ๋‹ค (ugly), follows the same pattern (๋ชป์ƒ๊ฒผ์–ด์š”).
  • Modifier forms: ์˜ˆ์œ, ๋ฉ‹์žˆ๋Š”, ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ค์šด, ๊ท€์—ฌ์šด, ์ž˜์ƒ๊ธด (all + noun, e.g., ์˜ˆ์œ ๊ฝƒ = pretty flower).
๐Ÿ”Ž
Cross-check: For official definitions and usage examples, search ์˜ˆ์˜๋‹ค, ๋ฉ‹์žˆ๋‹ค, ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ต๋‹ค, ๊ท€์—ฝ๋‹ค, and ์ž˜์ƒ๊ธฐ๋‹ค on ํ‘œ์ค€๊ตญ์–ด๋Œ€์‚ฌ์ „ (stdict.korean.go.kr) or korean.go.kr.

๐Ÿ” Synonym Alert

  • ์˜ˆ์˜๋‹ค vs ๊ท€์—ฝ๋‹ค โ€” ์˜ˆ์˜๋‹ค describes something pretty or elegant (a refined kind of attractiveness), while ๊ท€์—ฝ๋‹ค describes something cute or adorable (a softer, more playful kind of charm). A flower is usually ์˜ˆ์˜๋‹ค; a puppy is usually ๊ท€์—ฝ๋‹ค.
  • ๋ฉ‹์žˆ๋‹ค vs ์ž˜์ƒ๊ธฐ๋‹ค โ€” ๋ฉ‹์žˆ๋‹ค describes overall coolness or style (and can apply to people, actions, clothes, or objects), while ์ž˜์ƒ๊ธฐ๋‹ค refers specifically to a person's (usually a man's) handsome facial appearance.

โš ๏ธ Pitfalls to Dodge

  1. Don't conjugate ์ž˜์ƒ๊ธฐ๋‹ค as ์ž˜์ƒ๊ฒจ์š” โ€” Korean speakers use ์ž˜์ƒ๊ฒผ์–ด์š” (past form) to describe someone's current looks.
  1. Remember ์˜ˆ์˜๋‹ค is ใ…ก-irregular: ์˜ˆ์˜์–ด์š” is incorrect โ€” the correct form is ์˜ˆ๋ป์š”.
  1. Don't forget ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ต๋‹ค and ๊ท€์—ฝ๋‹ค are ใ…‚-irregular: ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ต์–ด์š”/๊ท€์—ฝ์–ด์š” are incorrect โ€” use ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ค์›Œ์š”/๊ท€์—ฌ์›Œ์š”.
  1. ๋ฉ‹์žˆ๋‹ค vs ๋ฉ‹์ง€๋‹ค โ€” both mean "cool," but ๋ฉ‹์žˆ๋‹ค is slightly more common in casual speech; either is fine.
  1. ์˜ˆ์˜๋‹ค and ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ต๋‹ค can both mean "beautiful," but ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ต๋‹ค sounds more elevated/poetic โ€” calling a person ์•„๋ฆ„๋‹ค์›Œ์š” is a strong, formal compliment, while ์˜ˆ๋ป์š” is more everyday.
