TL;DR 🦄
  • 🕯️ -(으)ㄴ/는 듯하다 [-(eu)n/neun deut-ha-da] can also mean I vaguely remember / I seem to recall when it describes a hazy memory.
  • 🌫️ This advanced use is softer than 기억나요 [gi-eong-na-yo] (“I remember”) because the speaker is not fully certain.
  • 🧭 The same shape can mean “seems/appears” or “seems to remember”; context words like 어렴풋이 [eo-ryeom-pu-si] (“vaguely”), 기억이 나다 [gi-eo-gi na-da] (“to remember”), and past-time clues help you read it.

and type sentences like 어렴풋이 본 듯해요 [eo-ryeom-pu-si bon deu-tae-yo] (“I vaguely seem to have seen it”) or 전에 들은 듯해요 [jeo-ne deu-reun deu-tae-yo] (“I seem to have heard it before”) to hear the soft, uncertain rhythm.

🌈 The Big Picture

In earlier 듯하다 lessons, you used it like a careful detective: “it seems / appears.” This advanced lesson adds a memory-flavored use: “I seem to remember...” or “I vaguely recall...” 🕯️

The key is that the speaker is not saying, “I definitely remember.” Instead, the speaker is reaching into the fog:
  • 전에 본 듯해요. [jeo-ne bon deu-tae-yo] — I seem to have seen it before. 👀
  • 어디서 들은 듯해요. [eo-di-seo deu-reun deu-tae-yo] — I seem to have heard it somewhere. 👂
  • 이름을 잊은 듯해요. [i-reu-meul i-jeun deu-tae-yo] — I seem to have forgotten the name. 🏷️

Advanced nuance: this use often appears with past/completed forms because memories usually point backward. You will often see 본 듯하다 (“seem to have seen”), 들은 듯하다 (“seem to have heard”), 만난 듯하다 (“seem to have met”), and 읽은 듯하다 (“seem to have read”). 📖

🎨 The Core Vague-Recollection Family

1. Past/completed action + -(으)ㄴ 듯하다

Use this for “I seem to have done / experienced it before.”
  • 보다 [bo-da] — to see/watch → 본 듯하다 [bon deut-ha-da] — seem to have seen
  • 듣다 [deut-da] — to hear/listen → 들은 듯하다 [deu-reun deut-ha-da] — seem to have heard
  • 만나다 [man-na-da] — to meet → 만난 듯하다 [man-nan deut-ha-da] — seem to have met
  • 읽다 [ik-tta] — to read → 읽은 듯하다 [il-geun deut-ha-da] — seem to have read

2. Memory state + -(으)ㄴ 듯하다

Use this when the memory state itself feels uncertain.
  • 기억나다 [gi-eong-na-da] — to remember → 기억난 듯하다 [gi-eong-nan deut-ha-da] — seem to remember / something seems to come to mind
  • 잊다 [it-da] — to forget → 잊은 듯하다 [i-jeun deut-ha-da] — seem to have forgotten
  • 헷갈리다 [het-kkal-li-da] — to get confused/mixed up → 헷갈리는 듯하다 [het-kkal-li-neun deut-ha-da] — seem to be confused

3. Helpful companion words

These words make the “vague recollection” feeling clearer:
  • 어렴풋이 [eo-ryeom-pu-si] — vaguely, faintly 🌫️
  • 전에 [jeo-ne] — before 🕰️
  • 어디서 [eo-di-seo] — somewhere / where 📍
  • 분명히 [bun-myeong-hi] — clearly, definitely 🔎
  • 아마 [a-ma] — probably 🎲

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

1. Vague visual memory

  • 그 사진을 전에 본 듯해요.
    • [geu sa-ji-neul jeo-ne bon deu-tae-yo]
I seem to have seen that photo before. 🖼️
사진 = photo; 전에 = before; 보다 = to see/watch.

2. Vague auditory memory

  • 그 이름을 어디서 들은 듯해요.
    • [geu i-reu-meul eo-di-seo deu-reun deu-tae-yo]
I seem to have heard that name somewhere. 🏷️
이름 = name; 어디서 = somewhere; 듣다 = to hear/listen.

3. Memory with uncertainty

  • 설명을 읽은 듯하지만 자세히 기억나지 않아요.
    • [seol-myeong-eul il-geun deu-ta-ji-man ja-se-hi gi-eong-na-ji a-na-yo]
I seem to have read the explanation, but I do not remember it in detail. 📄
설명 = explanation; 자세히 = in detail; 기억나지 않다 = not remember.

🧩 General Formation Rule

Completed action: “seem to have...”

  • Vowel stem + ㄴ 듯하다
    • 보다 → 본 듯하다 [bo-da → bon deut-ha-da] — seem to have seen
    • 만나다 → 만난 듯하다 [man-na-da → man-nan deut-ha-da] — seem to have met
  • Consonant stem + 은 듯하다
    • 읽다 → 읽은 듯하다 [ik-tta → il-geun deut-ha-da] — seem to have read
    • 잊다 → 잊은 듯하다 [it-da → i-jeun deut-ha-da] — seem to have forgotten

Present/current state: “seem to be...”

Use -는 듯하다 when the action or mental state is current:
  • 헷갈리다 → 헷갈리는 듯하다 [het-kkal-li-da → het-kkal-li-neun deut-ha-da] — seem to be confused
  • 찾다 → 찾는 듯하다 [chat-tta → chat-neun deut-ha-da] — seem to be looking for

Polite forms

  • 듯해요 [deu-tae-yo] — polite everyday
  • 듯합니다 [deu-tam-ni-da] — formal
  • 듯했어요 [deu-tae-sseo-yo] — seemed / seemed to have
✍️
Spacing note
Write the modifier before 듯하다 separately:
  • 본 듯해요 [bon deu-tae-yo]
  • 들은 듯해요 [deu-reun deu-tae-yo]
  • 기억난 듯해요 [gi-eong-nan deu-tae-yo]
  • 본듯해요

📚 Cross-check note

This lesson was cross-checked against korean.go.kr. National Institute of Korean Language guidance describes 듯하다 as a helper adjective used after modifier forms to express guessing/supposition, and it also confirms learner-safe spacing such as 온 듯하다 rather than 온 듯 하다. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

These are close, but not identical:
  • 기억나요 [gi-eong-na-yo] — I remember. Clearer and more confident.
  • 기억나는 듯해요 [gi-eong-na-neun deu-tae-yo] — I seem to remember. Softer and uncertain.
  • 본 듯해요 [bon deu-tae-yo] — I seem to have seen it.
  • 본 것 같아요 [bon geot ga-ta-yo] — I think I saw it / it seems I saw it. More everyday.
  • 본 듯싶어요 [bon deut-ssi-peo-yo] — I get the sense I saw it. Even more inward and tentative.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 전에 보는 듯해요 → ✅ 전에 본 듯해요. A memory of seeing something before uses the completed form.
  • 들은듯해요 → ✅ 들은 듯해요. Keep the learner-safe space before 듯해요.
  • 기억나요 when you are uncertain → ✅ 기억나는 듯해요 or 본 듯해요. Soften it.
  • ❌ Using vague-recollection 듯하다 for a confirmed fact → ✅ Say it directly if you are sure.
  • ❌ Confusing -(으)ㄴ/는 듯하다 with future -(으)ㄹ 듯하다 → ✅ 본 듯해요 = seem to have seen; 볼 듯해요 = seem likely to see/watch.

🕯️ Bottom line: -(으)ㄴ/는 듯하다 can turn a blurry memory into careful Korean: “I think I remember, but don’t quote me too aggressively.” Tiny fog machine included. 🌫️
