🌈 The Big Picture

-(으)ㄹ지도 모르다 is Korean’s “maybe/might” pattern. It lets you say a possibility without sounding too sure.

Use it when the speaker does not have enough proof to say “probably” or “obviously”:
  • Cloudy sky → “It might rain.”
  • No reply → “They might be busy.”
  • A plan is still changing → “The meeting time might change.”
  • A quiet store → “It might be closed.”

Examples:
  • 하늘이 흐려요. 비가 올지도 몰라요.
    • [ha-neu-ri heu-ryeo-yo. bi-ga ol-ji-do mol-la-yo] — The sky is cloudy. It might rain. 🌧️
하늘 = sky; 흐리다 = to be cloudy; = rain; 오다 = to come / to fall.
  • 답장이 없어요. 친구가 바쁠지도 몰라요.
    • [dap-jang-i eop-sseo-yo. chin-gu-ga ba-ppeul-ji-do mol-la-yo] — There is no reply. My friend might be busy. 📱
답장 = reply; 친구 = friend; 바쁘다 = to be busy.
  • 가게 불이 꺼져 있어요. 오늘 쉴지도 몰라요.
    • [ga-ge bu-ri kkeo-jyeo i-sseo-yo. o-neul swil-ji-do mol-la-yo] — The store light is off. It might be closed today. 🏪
가게 = store; = light; 꺼지다 = to go off; 오늘 = today; 쉬다 = to rest / to be closed.

The feeling is: “I’m not sure, but it is possible.” Tiny mystery fog unlocked. 🌫️
