Using '왠지'
왠지 is one of those quietly essential Korean words that almost every learner underuses — but native speakers use constantly.
Iru Helper Note
왠지 means "for some reason" or "somehow" — it expresses a vague gut feeling or intuition that you can't quite explain. Today you'll learn how to use 왠지 naturally across a variety of situations: feelings, hunches, preferences, and emotional observations. Once you start using it, you'll notice how often native speakers reach for it.
왠지 오늘은 잘 될 것 같아요.
(Somehow, I have a feeling today is going to go well.)
🌀 What You'll Learn Today
왠지 is the Korean equivalent of "somehow," "for some reason," or "I don't know why but..." It signals a feeling or intuition you can't fully explain — and it sounds deeply natural in everyday speech. Today you'll learn the core pattern for using 왠지, five types of situations where it appears most naturally, and how to layer it with other expressions you've already learned.
Core pattern:
왠지 + [feeling or observation] + -는 것 같아요 / -네요 / -아요/어요
📌 Five Natural Contexts for 왠지
Context | Example | Meaning |
A gut feeling about how something will go | 왠지 잘 될 것 같아요 | I have a feeling it's going to work out |
An unexplained preference or aversion | 왠지 오늘은 커피 대신 차가 마시고 싶어요 | For some reason today I want tea instead of coffee |
A vague emotional state you can't explain | 왠지 기분이 좋아요 | For some reason I'm in a good mood |
An observation about someone or something | 왠지 그 사람이 믿음직스러워요 | For some reason that person seems trustworthy |
A slight unease or concern | 왠지 좀 걱정이 돼요 | Somehow I'm a little worried |
💡 왠지 vs. 어쩐지: Both mean "for some reason" but have a subtle difference. 왠지 is for unexplained present feelings or intuitions. 어쩐지 is used when you're realizing that the feeling makes sense in retrospect — "so that's why" / "no wonder." For now, focus on 왠지 — it covers the vast majority of everyday uses.
Common patterns:
- 왠지 + adj + -아요/어요: 왠지 피곤해요 (Somehow I'm tired)
- 왠지 + V + -고 싶어요: 왠지 집에 있고 싶어요 (For some reason I want to stay home)
- 왠지 + clause + -는 것 같아요: 왠지 오늘 잘 안 될 것 같아요 (Somehow I have a feeling today won't go well)
- 왠지 + -네요: 왠지 설레네요 (For some reason I feel excited)

🌏 Cultural Note — 직감 말하기: Expressing Gut Feelings in Korean
Koreans often express gut feelings and intuitions through softened language — and 왠지 is a key tool for this. Rather than making direct claims ("I know this will work"), Korean speakers often express the same idea through 왠지 + soft ending: 왠지 잘 될 것 같아요 ("somehow I have a feeling it'll work out").
This vagueness isn't hesitation — it's social harmony. By framing your feeling as inexplicable rather than certain, you avoid pressure on your listener and leave space for things to turn out differently. At the same time, the feeling itself is genuine and shared.
왠지 also appears frequently in:
- Describing a first impression of a person: 왠지 친근한 느낌이에요 (For some reason they feel approachable)
- Describing a place or atmosphere: 왠지 이 카페가 마음에 들어요 (For some reason I like this café)
- Expressing a soft concern: 왠지 좀 걱정이 돼요 (Somehow I'm a little worried)

왠지 + 것 같아요 | Gut feeling about outcome |
