반면에 — On the Other Hand
The Korean way to contrast, compare, and present two sides naturally.
Iru Helper Note
반면에 signals contrast — "on the other hand" or "whereas." It's essential for balanced opinions and comparisons.
서울은 바쁠 반면에 제주도는 조용해요.
(Whereas Seoul is busy, Jeju Island is quiet.)
⚖️ What You'll Learn Today
Contrast is the backbone of balanced thinking and persuasive speech. In this lesson, you'll master 반면에 and related contrast connectors that let you present two sides of an idea — "on the one hand X, but on the other hand Y." These phrases are essential for giving opinions, making comparisons, writing critiques, and sounding sophisticated in Korean conversations.
📌 Contrast Connectors: 반면에 and Friends
Expression | Meaning | Notes |
반면에 | On the other hand / whereas | Core contrast connector; versatile |
~는 반면에 | Whereas ~ | Attaches to clause or noun |
그런데 | But / however | Softer contrast; also used as topic shift |
하지만 | But / however | Strong contrast; very common |
그러나 | However / but | Formal; common in writing |
반대로 | On the contrary / conversely | Flips to the opposite perspective |
오히려 | Rather / on the contrary | Surprise contrast: "actually the opposite is true" |
~에 비해서 | Compared to ~ | Comparison-based contrast |
한편 | On the other hand / meanwhile | Introduces second perspective |
그에 반해 | In contrast to that | Formal; used in analysis/writing |
차이가 있다 | There is a difference | Explicitly states contrast exists |
다른 한편으로는 | On the other hand | More emphatic "other side" |
그럼에도 불구하고 | Nevertheless / despite that | Contrast despite an obstacle |
~와/과 달리 | Unlike ~ | Draws contrast from a reference point |
💡 Key pattern: [Statement A] + 반면에 / [Statement A] + ~는 반면에 + [Statement B] — the two clauses are connected. 반면에 can also stand alone at the start of the second clause.
💬 Conversations in Action
Dialogue 1 — Comparing Two Cities
A: 서울이랑 부산 중에 어디가 더 좋아요? (Between Seoul and Busan, which do you like more?)
B: 서울은 할 것이 많을 반면에 부산은 더 여유로운 것 같아요. (Seoul has a lot to do, whereas Busan seems more relaxed.)
A: 맞아요. 그에 반해 부산은 바다도 가깝고요. (Right. In contrast, Busan is also close to the ocean.)
B: 둘 다 좋지만 분위기는 달라요. (Both are good but the atmosphere is different.)
Dialogue 2 — Giving a Balanced Opinion
A: 재택근무 어때요? (What do you think about working from home?)
B: 집에서 일하면 편할 반면에 집중하기 어려울 때도 있어요. (Working from home is comfortable, whereas it can also be hard to focus.)
A: 그럼에도 불구하고 계속 하고 싶어요? (Despite that, do you want to keep doing it?)
B: 네, 오히려 더 생산적인 것 같아요. (Yes, it actually seems more productive.)
🌏 Cultural Note — Balanced Opinions in Korean
Korean communication often values expressing both sides of an issue before arriving at a conclusion. Jumping straight to one side can come across as one-dimensional. Using 반면에 or 한편 to acknowledge the other perspective signals maturity and nuance. This is especially true in workplaces and academic discussions, where presenting only one side without contrast can sound immature or unbalanced.

Expression Reference
Expression | Nuance/Key |

Tip: 반면에 vs. 하지만
Both contrast, but differently: 하지만 comes at the start of a new sentence and simply says "but." 반면에 connects two clauses in one breath and sounds more balanced and analytical — "X is true, whereas Y is also true." For giving opinions, 반면에 sounds more mature and considered.
