Frequency adverbs like 항상 [hang-sang] ("always"), 자주 [ja-ju] ("often"), and 가끔 [ga-kkeum] ("sometimes") usually go right before the verb: 저는 가끔 운동해요 — "I sometimes exercise." They're essential for describing habits, routines, and how often you do things. 🔁

🎭 The Negative Side: Rarely and Never

For low-frequency or zero-frequency actions, Korean pairs adverbs with negation:

거의 안 ~ [geo-i an] — "rarely / almost never" (still happens occasionally) 🤏

전혀 안 ~ [jeon-hyeo an] — "never / not at all" (zero occurrences) 🚫

별로 안 ~ [byeol-ro an] — "not really / not much" 🤷

Note: 거의/전혀/별로 pair with 안 + verb (or -지 않다) to form the negative meaning.

🧭 Speaking Tip

Frequency adverbs go before the verb, usually right after the subject/topic: 저는 자주 운동해요 ("I often exercise"). When answering with just the adverb in casual speech, add 요 to keep it polite: 가끔요 ("sometimes") or 자주요 ("often"). This is a quick, natural way to respond to "how often" questions! 🔁

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

❌ Using 거의 alone to mean "rarely" → ✅ It needs 안: 거의 안 가요 = "rarely go," but 거의 매일 = "almost every day."

❌ Confusing 전혀 (never/not at all) with 별로 (not really/not much) — 전혀 is stronger → ✅ Use 전혀 for absolute negation, 별로 for mild negation.

❌ Placing the frequency adverb after the verb → ✅ Keep it before the verb: 자주 가요, not 가요 자주.

❌ Forgetting that 보통 means "usually," not "normal/common" as an adjective in this context → ✅ 보통 아침에 커피를 마셔요 = "I usually drink coffee in the morning."
