TL;DR 🦄
  • 🏘️ 젠트리피케이션 means urban change where investment, new businesses, and rising rents reshape an old neighborhood.
  • 🚪 둥지 내몰림 / 원주민 내몰림 highlights the human cost: long-time residents and small shops being pushed out.
  • 🌱 도시 재생 can be positive renewal, but without safeguards it may accelerate displacement instead of protecting community life.

🌈 The Big Picture

Urban gentrification is not just “a neighborhood got prettier.” It is a chain reaction: older districts receive new investment, cafés and cultural venues arrive, property values rise, rents climb, and the people who shaped the area may no longer be able to stay. 🏚️➡️🏙️
In Korean, the borrowed term 젠트리피케이션 means “gentrification.” The National Institute of Korean Language has also promoted the refined expression 둥지 내몰림, literally “being pushed out of one’s nest,” for the same phenomenon. That expression is vivid, emotional, and very useful in essays or debates. 🪺
This lesson focuses on three connected expressions:
  • 젠트리피케이션 — gentrification; the broad urban process
  • 원주민 내몰림 — displacement of original/long-time residents
  • 도시 재생 — urban regeneration; renewal or revitalization of an area

🎨 The Core Urban Gentrification Family

1. 젠트리피케이션 = gentrification 🏙️
Use this when discussing the social and economic transformation of a neighborhood. It often appears with words like 임대료 (rent), 상권 (commercial district), 부동산 가격 (real estate prices), and 지역 공동체 (local community).
2. 둥지 내몰림 / 원주민 내몰림 = displacement 🚪
내몰림 comes from 내몰다 (to drive out, push out). 원주민 here means original or long-time residents, not necessarily Indigenous peoples in the global political sense. In urban-policy contexts, 원주민 내몰림 means “the displacement of existing residents.”
3. 도시 재생 = urban regeneration 🌱
재생 means regeneration or renewal. 도시 재생 can sound positive: repairing old infrastructure, reviving local economies, and improving public spaces. But a key critical phrase is 도시 재생의 역설 — “the paradox of urban regeneration,” where renewal raises costs and pushes out the very community it was supposed to help.
🧭
Useful contrast:
도시 재생 is the policy-friendly umbrella term.
젠트리피케이션 is the critical social process.
둥지 내몰림 names the painful result.

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

  • 🏘️ 젠트리피케이션으로 인해 오래된 상점들이 문을 닫고 있어요.
    • “Because of gentrification, old shops are closing.”
으로 인해 means “because of / due to,” and 문을 닫다 means “to close down” when used for stores.
  • 🚪 임대료 상승은 원주민 내몰림을 가속화할 수 있어요.
    • “Rising rent can accelerate the displacement of long-time residents.”
임대료 상승 means “rent increase,” and 가속화하다 means “to accelerate.”
  • 🌳 도시 재생은 지역 공동체를 보호하는 방향으로 이루어져야 해요.
    • “Urban regeneration should be carried out in a way that protects the local community.”
방향으로 means “in the direction of,” and 이루어지다 means “to be carried out / to take place.”

🧩 General Formation Rule

These are noun-heavy academic expressions, so they often combine with policy/report verbs:
  • 젠트리피케이션이 발생하다 — gentrification occurs
  • 내몰림을 초래하다 — to cause displacement
  • 임대료가 상승하다 — rent rises
  • 상권이 활성화되다 — a commercial district becomes revitalized
  • 지역 공동체를 보호하다 — to protect a local community
  • 도시 재생 정책을 추진하다 — to promote an urban regeneration policy
There is no special conjugation exception here. The challenge is choosing the right noun phrase for the social nuance you want.

📚 Cross-check note

Key terms and meanings were checked against National Institute of Korean Language resources, including the promoted refined term 둥지 내몰림 for 젠트리피케이션, and standard dictionary-style meanings for 재생, 내몰다, and related policy vocabulary at korean.go.kr. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • 젠트리피케이션 — borrowed academic/media term; common in news, policy, and research.
  • 둥지 내몰림 — refined Korean expression; vivid and reader-friendly.
  • 원주민 내몰림 — descriptive phrase; emphasizes long-time residents.
  • 도시 재생 — neutral or positive policy term; not automatically negative.
  • 재개발 — redevelopment; often implies physical rebuilding and real-estate development more directly than 도시 재생.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • 도시 재생 = always bad → ✅ It can be beneficial when it protects residents, public space, and local businesses. 🌱
  • 젠트리피케이션 = just “new cafés” → ✅ Cafés may be a visible sign, but the deeper issue is rent, ownership, and displacement. ☕
  • 원주민 always means Indigenous people → ✅ In local urban discussions, it can mean original or long-time residents. 🏘️
  • 둥지 내몰림 is casual slang → ✅ It is a promoted refined expression and works well in explanatory writing. 🪺
  • 재개발 and 도시 재생 are identical → ✅ 재개발 stresses rebuilding; 도시 재생 stresses revitalization and recovery. 🏗️

Gentrification vocabulary lets you discuss cities with nuance: not just what looks new, but who benefits, who pays, and who gets to remain. 🏙️🪺
