TL;DR ๐ฆ
- ๐ช Intermediate Korean is not โnew universe grammarโ โ it is basic grammar plus connectors, nuance, and longer sentences.
- ๐งฑ Your job now is to connect ideas: reasons, conditions, background, plans, ongoing actions, and softer requests.
- ๐งญ Best next-step mindset: stop translating word-by-word and start asking, โWhat relationship does this grammar create between ideas?โ
๐ง Iru Helper Note โ Use Korean Helper Widgets to listen to longer intermediate sentences. At this level, rhythm matters: connectors like -๊ณ , -(์ผ)๋ฉด, -๋๋ฐ, and -๊ธฐ ๋๋ฌธ์ help the sentence flow instead of stopping after every idea. ๐
ย
๐ The Big Picture
You have finished the Basic Grammar foundation. ๐ That means you can now build simple Korean sentences with particles, polite endings, negatives, locations, irregulars, and politeness.
ย
Intermediate Korean asks you to do something new: combine ideas.
ย
Basic:
- ์ ๋ ์นดํ์ ๊ฐ์. [jeo-neun ka-pe-e ga-yo] โ I go to a cafe.
- ์ ๋ ๊ณต๋ถํด์. [jeo-neun gong-bu-hae-yo] โ I study.
ย
Intermediate:
- ์ ๋ ์นดํ์ ๊ฐ์ ๊ณต๋ถํด์. [jeo-neun ka-pe-e ga-seo gong-bu-hae-yo] โ I go to a cafe and study.
- ์๊ฐ์ด ์์ผ๋ฉด ์นดํ์์ ๊ณต๋ถํ ๊ฑฐ์์. [si-ga-ni i-sseu-myeon ka-pe-e-seo gong-bu-hal geo-ye-yo] โ If I have time, I will study at the cafe.
- ์นดํ์ ๊ฐ๊ณ ์ถ์๋ฐ ์๊ฐ์ด ์์ด์. [ka-pe-e ga-go si-peun-de si-ga-ni eop-seo-yo] โ I want to go to a cafe, but I donโt have time.
ย
The words are still familiar. The difference is that your grammar now explains why, when, if, while, because, although, and in what context. That is the bridge to intermediate. ๐
๐งญ What Changes at Intermediate Level?
1. Sentences get longer โ but not randomly
Intermediate sentences often have two or more clauses. A clause is a mini-sentence inside a bigger sentence.
- ๋น๊ฐ ์์. [bi-ga wa-yo] โ It rains.
- ์ง์ ์์ด์. [ji-be i-sseo-yo] โ I stay home.
- ๋น๊ฐ ์ค๋ฉด ์ง์ ์์ด์. [bi-ga o-myeon ji-be i-sseo-yo] โ If it rains, I stay home.
ย
2. Endings become meaning-tools
Basic grammar often asks, โWhat is the correct ending?โ Intermediate grammar asks, โWhat does this ending do?โ
- -๊ณ โ connects actions: and / and then
- -(์ผ)๋ฉด โ makes a condition: if / when
- -๋๋ฐ โ gives background, contrast, or setup
- -๊ธฐ ๋๋ฌธ์ โ gives a strong reason: because
- -๊ณ ์ถ๋ค โ expresses desire: want to
- -๊ณ ์๋ค โ shows ongoing action: be doing
ย
3. Nuance matters more
At the basic level, โcorrectโ often means โgrammatical.โ At the intermediate level, โcorrectโ also means natural for the situation.
ย
For example:
- ๋ฐฐ๊ณ ํ์. ๋ฐฅ์ ๋จน์ด์. โ Iโm hungry. I eat rice. โ grammatical, but choppy.
- ๋ฐฐ๊ณ ํ์ ๋ฐฅ์ ๋จน์ด์. โ Iโm hungry, so I eat. โ smoother.
- ๋ฐฐ๊ณ ํ๋๊น ๋ฐฅ์ ๋จน์๊ฒ์. โ Since Iโm hungry, Iโll eat. โ reason + decision/response.
๐งฑ The Intermediate Starter Toolkit
Here are the grammar families you will start seeing again and again.
ย
1. Connecting actions: -๊ณ ๐๏ธ
Use this to connect actions or descriptions.
- ์ ๋ ์์นจ์ ๋จน๊ณ ํ๊ต์ ๊ฐ์. [jeo-neun a-chi-meul meok-go hak-gyo-e ga-yo] โ I eat breakfast and go to school.
- ๋ฐฉ์ด ๊นจ๋ํ๊ณ ์กฐ์ฉํด์. [bang-i kkae-kkeu-ta-go jo-yong-hae-yo] โ The room is clean and quiet.
ย
2. Conditions: -(์ผ)๋ฉด ๐ฑ
Use this for โif/when.โ
- ์๊ฐ์ด ์์ผ๋ฉด ์ ํํด ์ฃผ์ธ์. [si-ga-ni i-sseu-myeon jeon-hwa-hae ju-se-yo] โ If you have time, please call.
- ๋ ์จ๊ฐ ์ข์ผ๋ฉด ๊ณต์์ ๊ฐ์. [nal-ssi-ga jo-eu-myeon gong-wo-ne ga-yo] โ If the weather is good, I go to the park.
ย
3. Background / setup / contrast: -๋๋ฐ / -(์ผ)ใด๋ฐ ๐
This is one of the most important intermediate connectors. It can mean โand/but/so/for contextโฆโ depending on the sentence.
- ์ง๊ธ ๋ฐ์๋ฐ ๋์ค์ ์ ํํ ๊ฒ์. [ji-geum ba-ppeun-de na-jung-e jeon-hwa-hal-ge-yo] โ Iโm busy now, so Iโll call later.
- ์ด ์๋น์ ๋ง์๋๋ฐ ์กฐ๊ธ ๋น์ธ์. [i sik-dang-eun ma-sin-neun-de jo-geum bi-ssa-yo] โ This restaurant is good, but a little expensive.
ย
4. Strong reasons: -๊ธฐ ๋๋ฌธ์ ๐ช
Use this for clear โbecause / due toโ reasoning.
- ๋น๊ฐ ์ค๊ธฐ ๋๋ฌธ์ ์ง์ ์์ด์. [bi-ga o-gi ttae-mu-ne ji-be i-sseo-yo] โ Because it is raining, I stay home.
- ์ํ์ด ์๊ธฐ ๋๋ฌธ์ ๊ณต๋ถํด์ผ ํด์. [si-heo-mi it-gi ttae-mu-ne gong-bu-hae-ya hae-yo] โ Because there is an exam, I have to study.
ย
5. Desire: -๊ณ ์ถ๋ค ๐ญ
Use this for โwant to.โ
- ํ๊ตญ์ ๊ฐ๊ณ ์ถ์ด์. [han-gu-ge ga-go si-peo-yo] โ I want to go to Korea.
- ๊น์น๋ฅผ ๋จน๊ณ ์ถ์ด์. [gim-chi-reul meok-go si-peo-yo] โ I want to eat kimchi.
ย
6. Ongoing actions: -๊ณ ์๋ค ๐
Use this for โbe doing.โ
- ์ ๋ ์ง๊ธ ๊ณต๋ถํ๊ณ ์์ด์. [jeo-neun ji-geum gong-bu-ha-go i-sseo-yo] โ I am studying now.
- ์น๊ตฌ๊ฐ ๊ธฐ๋ค๋ฆฌ๊ณ ์์ด์. [chin-gu-ga gi-da-ri-go i-sseo-yo] โ My friend is waiting.
ย
7. Purpose and plans: -(์ผ)๋ฌ ๊ฐ๋ค, -(์ผ)๋ ค๊ณ ํ๋ค ๐๏ธ
Use these to explain why you go somewhere or what you plan/intend to do.
- ์ปคํผ๋ฅผ ์ฌ๋ฌ ๊ฐ์. [keo-pi-reul sa-reo ga-yo] โ Iโm going to buy coffee.
- ๋ด์ผ ๊ณต๋ถํ๋ ค๊ณ ํด์. [nae-il gong-bu-ha-ryeo-go hae-yo] โ Iโm planning to study tomorrow.
๐ ๏ธ How Intermediate Sentences Work
Intermediate Korean often stacks familiar pieces:
ย
Basic pieces
- ์ ๋ ์๊ฐ์ด ์์ด์. โ I have time.
- ์นดํ์์ ๊ณต๋ถํด์. โ I study at the cafe.
ย
Intermediate connection
- ์๊ฐ์ด ์์ผ๋ฉด ์นดํ์์ ๊ณต๋ถํด์. [si-ga-ni i-sseu-myeon ka-pe-e-seo gong-bu-hae-yo] โ If I have time, I study at the cafe.
ย
More natural detail
- ์๊ฐ์ด ์์ผ๋ฉด ์นดํ์์ ์น๊ตฌ์ ๊ฐ์ด ๊ณต๋ถํ๋ ค๊ณ ํด์. [si-ga-ni i-sseu-myeon ka-pe-e-seo chin-gu-wa ga-chi gong-bu-ha-ryeo-go hae-yo] โ If I have time, Iโm planning to study with a friend at the cafe.
ย
The sentence is longer, but the structure is still logical:
- condition: ์๊ฐ์ด ์์ผ๋ฉด
- place: ์นดํ์์
- companion: ์น๊ตฌ์ ๊ฐ์ด
- plan: ๊ณต๋ถํ๋ ค๊ณ ํด์
๐งฉ Transition Rule: Think in Relationships
When you see intermediate grammar, ask:
- Is this showing a sequence? โ -๊ณ , -์์/์ด์
- Is this showing a condition? โ -(์ผ)๋ฉด, -(์ผ)๋ ค๋ฉด
- Is this giving background or contrast? โ -๋๋ฐ / -(์ผ)ใด๋ฐ
- Is this giving a reason? โ -๊ธฐ ๋๋ฌธ์, -(์ผ)๋๊น
- Is this showing desire or intention? โ -๊ณ ์ถ๋ค, -(์ผ)๋ ค๊ณ ํ๋ค
- Is this showing ongoing action? โ -๊ณ ์๋ค
ย
This is the big mindset shift: grammar is not decoration. Grammar tells you how two ideas relate. ๐ง
๐งญ Suggested Next Lessons
A good intermediate launch path:
- Connecting Actions: ๊ณ โ learn to chain actions and descriptions.
- Conditional If: (์ผ)๋ฉด โ build โif/whenโ sentences.
- Background Information: -๋๋ฐ / -(์ผ)ใด๋ฐ โ unlock natural context and contrast.
- Expressing Desire: -๊ณ ์ถ๋ค โ say what you want to do.
- Ongoing Actions: -๊ณ ์๋ค โ talk about what is happening now.
- The Strong Reason: -๊ธฐ ๋๋ฌธ์ โ give clear reasons.
- Intentional Purpose: (์ผ)๋ฌ ๊ฐ๋ค / ์ค๋ค โ explain why you go/come.
- Intentional Plan: -(์ผ)๋ ค๊ณ ํ๋ค โ express plans and intentions.
๐ Cross-check note
The transition themes here align with National Institute of Korean Language learner materials and standard Korean grammar progression: moving from simple sentence endings into connecting endings, conditions, reasons, intentions, and discourse-level context. โ
๐ช Synonym Alert
- ์ด๊ธ [cho-geup] โ beginner level.
- ์ค๊ธ [jung-geup] โ intermediate level.
- ๋ฌธ๋ฒ ์ฐ๊ฒฐ [mun-beop yeon-gyeol] โ grammar connection / linking grammar.
- ์ฐ๊ฒฐ ์ด๋ฏธ [yeon-gyeol eo-mi] โ connective ending; grammar ending that links clauses.
- ๋ฌธ๋งฅ [mun-maek] โ context.
- ๋์์ค [nwi-ang-seu] โ nuance.
โ ๏ธ Pitfalls to Dodge
- โ Trying to translate every connector as exactly one English word โ โ Learn the relationship it creates.
- โ Making every sentence long just because you can โ โ Long sentences should still be clear.
- โ Forgetting basic particles while learning new endings โ โ Intermediate grammar still depends on beginner grammar.
- โ Using -๊ณ for every โandโ โ โ Sometimes sequence/reason needs -์์/์ด์ or another connector.
- โ Treating -๋๋ฐ as only โbutโ โ โ It can also set background or soften the next idea.
- โ Memorizing forms without making your own sentences โ โ Intermediate grammar needs production practice.
ย
๐ You are not leaving beginner grammar behind. You are upgrading it. Basic grammar is the skeleton; intermediate grammar adds joints, movement, and style. ๐ฆดโก๏ธ๐
