TOPIK II Prep
TL;DR
  • In the final 5 minutes, do not “rewrite” your essay; hunt for high-value errors that lower clarity and grammar control.
  • Check in this order: task fit → paragraph flow → endings/register → particles → spelling/spacing.
  • Fix only what you can correct confidently; risky last-minute changes often create new errors.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read each corrected Korean sentence aloud once. Your ear will often catch missing particles, awkward endings, and unnatural connector flow before your eyes do.

🔑 The Big Picture

A TOPIK II Writing essay is not only scored on ideas. It is also judged by how clearly and accurately those ideas are delivered. In the final minutes, many learners keep adding new sentences, but the safer score boost often comes from proofreading what is already there.
The 5-minute essay proofread is a short, repeatable routine for catching the most visible problems:
  • The answer does not fully match the prompt.
  • Paragraphs feel disconnected.
  • Sentence endings mix formal and informal styles.
  • Particles such as 은/는, 이/가, 을/를, 에/에서, 로/으로 are missing or incorrect.
  • Spelling, spacing, or common forms such as 돼요/되요, 안/않, 것 같다, 때문에 are incorrect.
For TOPIK II, the goal is not perfection. The goal is to remove errors that make the examiner pause.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Use a fixed 5-minute order

Do not proofread randomly. Move from the highest-level issues to the smallest errors.
Time
Check
What to fix
0:00–1:00
Task fit
Does the essay answer every part of the prompt?
1:00–2:00
Structure
Are introduction, body, and conclusion easy to follow?
2:00–3:00
Connectors
Are contrast, cause, result, and examples signaled clearly?
3:00–4:00
Grammar and endings
Are sentence endings consistent and appropriate for formal writing?
4:00–5:00
Particles, spelling, spacing
Are the small visible errors cleaned up?

2. Prioritize meaning-breaking errors

Some errors are small. Others damage the examiner’s understanding.
High-priority corrections:
  • Missing required point: The prompt asks for causes and solutions, but the essay only gives causes.
  • Wrong connector: 그러나 is used where the sentence needs 따라서.
  • Wrong particle changes meaning: 학교에 공부하다 should be 학교에서 공부하다.
  • Register mismatch: 좋아해요 should be 좋아합니다 or 좋다고 생각합니다 in formal essay style.
  • Common spelling error: 되요 should be 돼요, and in formal writing often 됩니다 is better.
Lower-priority corrections:
  • Replacing a correct simple word with a more advanced word you are not sure about.
  • Adding a brand-new argument in the final minute.
  • Rewriting a whole paragraph when only one sentence is unclear.

3. Know the most common TOPIK writing error zones

Particles
  • 은/는: topic or contrast
    • Example: 청소년은 스마트폰 사용 시간이 길어지고 있습니다.
  • 이/가: subject or new focus
    • Example: 가장 큰 문제는 집중력이 떨어진다는 점입니다.
  • 을/를: object
    • Example: 정부는 다양한 정책을 마련해야 합니다.
  • : destination, time, static location
    • Example: 오후 3시에 회의가 있습니다.
  • 에서: action location, source
    • Example: 학교에서 캠페인을 진행했습니다.
  • 로/으로: method, direction, change
    • Example: 온라인 수업으로 전환되었습니다.
Spelling and form
  • 되다 / 돼다되다 is basic form; 돼요 is contracted form of 되어요.
  • 안 / 않 before verbs/adjectives; 않다 as an auxiliary.
  • 것 같다 → space between and 같다.
  • 때문에 → one word.
  • 할 수 있다 → spaces between units.
Formal essay endings
Prefer consistent formal written style:
  • -습니다 / -ㅂ니다
  • -다고 생각합니다
  • -아야/어야 합니다
  • -는 것이 중요합니다
  • -기 때문에 / -으므로 / 따라서
Avoid casual endings in TOPIK essays:
  • -해요
  • -거든요
  • -잖아요
  • -죠 when used conversationally

✍️ Writing Focus: What Examiners Notice

A strong final proofread protects these scoring areas:
  • Task fulfillment: The essay answers the prompt directly and completely.
  • Coherence/cohesion: Ideas are linked with clear connectors and paragraph logic.
  • Grammar control: Sentence endings, particles, tense, and modifiers are accurate enough not to distract.
  • Lexical range: Vocabulary is appropriate and not awkwardly overused.
  • Style/register: The essay sounds like formal written Korean, not casual conversation.

Model before proofreading

요즘 많은 학생들은 스마트폰을 많이 사용해요. 스마트폰은 편리하지만 집중력이 떨어집니다. 그리고 잠을 늦게 자서 건강도 나쁩니다. 이 문제를 해결하려고 학교에 교육을 해야 합니다. 부모님도 사용 시간을 정하는 것이 좋다.

Model after the 5-minute proofread

Why the revised answer scores better

  • The register is consistent: 사용해요 → 사용합니다, 좋다 → 바람직합니다.
  • Cause and result are clearer: 과도하게 사용하면, 수면 시간이 줄어들어.
  • Particles are corrected: 학교에 교육을 해야 합니다 → 학교에서는 교육을 실시해야 합니다.
  • The solution is more specific and natural: parents set and maintain usage rules with children.

✅ Exam Strategy

The 5-minute proofread checklist

Use this exact checklist at the end of a TOPIK II writing task:
  1. Prompt match
      • Did I answer all required parts?
      • If the prompt asks for “causes and solutions,” are both present?
      • If it asks for my opinion, is my opinion stated clearly?
  1. Paragraph function
      • Introduction: topic and position
      • Body: reasons, examples, explanation
      • Conclusion: summary or recommendation
  1. Connector logic
      • Cause: 왜냐하면, -기 때문에, -으므로
      • Contrast: 그러나, 반면에
      • Addition: 또한, 게다가
      • Result: 따라서, 그러므로
      • Example: 예를 들어
  1. Sentence endings and register
      • Change casual endings to formal written endings.
      • Avoid mixing -해요 and -습니다.
      • Make recommendations with -아야/어야 합니다, -는 것이 필요합니다, or -는 것이 바람직합니다.
  1. Particles, spelling, spacing
      • Check every noun before a particle.
      • Circle forms you often confuse: 에/에서, 은/는/이/가, 을/를, 안/않, 되/돼.
      • Fix only forms you know.

Fast correction symbols

When practicing, mark your draft quickly:
  • T = task problem
  • L = logic or connector problem
  • E = ending/register problem
  • P = particle problem
  • S = spelling/spacing problem
Example:
  • 학교에 교육을 해야 합니다.P/L학교에서는 교육을 실시해야 합니다.
  • 이 문제는 중요해요.E이 문제는 중요합니다.
  • 학생들이 스마트폰을 많이 사용합니다. 그러나 건강 문제가 생깁니다.L학생들이 스마트폰을 많이 사용하면 건강 문제가 생길 수 있습니다.

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Rewriting too much

Do not try to create a new essay in the final 5 minutes. You may lose coherence and introduce new grammar errors.
Better approach:
  • Keep your original idea.
  • Correct unclear sentences.
  • Add one missing required point only if necessary.

Pitfall 2: Overusing advanced connectors

Advanced connectors help only when the logic is correct.
Awkward:
  • 학생들은 운동을 하지 않습니다. 반면에 건강이 나빠집니다.
Better:
  • 학생들이 운동을 하지 않으면 건강이 나빠질 수 있습니다.
  • 학생들은 운동을 하지 않습니다. 따라서 건강이 나빠질 수 있습니다.

Pitfall 3: Fixing style but ignoring task fulfillment

A grammatically clean essay can still lose points if it does not answer the prompt.
If the prompt asks:
  • Problem + cause + solution
Your essay must include:
  • What the problem is
  • Why it happens
  • What should be done

Pitfall 4: Using casual spoken forms

In TOPIK II essay writing, avoid sounding like a conversation.
Avoid:
  • 이 방법이 좋을 것 같아요.
  • 사람들이 너무 많이 쓰거든요.
Prefer:
  • 이 방법이 효과적이라고 생각합니다.
  • 사람들이 지나치게 많이 사용하기 때문입니다.
