🔑 The Big Picture

The TOPIK II Writing section gives you 50 minutes for Questions 51–54. The challenge is that the questions are not equal in difficulty or point value.
  • 51–52: sentence completion. These are shorter and should be handled quickly.
  • 53: graph/table description. This needs structure, comparison language, and accuracy.
  • 54: opinion essay. This usually takes the most planning and writing time.
A strong strategy is to treat the exam like a budget. Every minute must have a job.

2. The “secure first, expand later” rule

Do not chase perfect sentences early. First, secure answerable points.
  • For 51–52, write clear and natural completions.
  • For 53, cover the most important numbers and comparison.
  • For 54, answer all parts of the prompt before trying to sound impressive.

3. Time signals you should memorize

Use these checkpoints during practice:
  • 40 minutes left: Questions 51–52 should be finished.
  • 28–30 minutes left: Question 53 should be finished.
  • 5 minutes left: Question 54 should be complete enough to revise.
  • 2 minutes left: stop adding new ideas and fix errors only.

✅ Exam Strategy

Step 1. Preview all four questions in under 1 minute

Before writing, quickly check the topic and task type. Do not solve everything yet. The goal is to know where the hard work is.

Step 2. Finish Questions 51–52 without overthinking

For 51–52, natural connection matters more than advanced grammar. Ask:
  • Does the sentence fit the situation?
  • Is the ending polite or formal enough?
  • Does the grammar connect logically with the previous clause?

Step 3. Use a fixed template for Question 53

For graph/table writing, use this order:
  1. State what the data shows.
  1. Give the highest or most noticeable result.
  1. Compare the second important result.
  1. Mention a change, contrast, or reason if shown.
  1. End with an overall summary.
Helpful sentence frames:

Step 4. Protect Question 54 with a short outline

Before writing Question 54, spend 3–4 minutes planning. A weak outline often creates a weak essay.
A reliable outline:
  1. Introduction: restate topic and give position.
  1. Body 1: first reason + example.
  1. Body 2: second reason or solution + example.
  1. Conclusion: summarize and restate position.

Step 5. Revise strategically

In the final 2–3 minutes, check high-impact errors:
  • Missing required part of the prompt
  • Wrong tense or sentence ending
  • Particle errors: 은/는, 이/가, 을/를, 에, 에서
  • Informal style in formal writing
  • Sentences that are too long and unclear

0:00–1:00 — Scan

Read the instructions and identify which questions may take longer.

1:00–10:00 — Questions 51–52

Write direct answers. If one answer is difficult, make the best natural completion and move on.

10:00–22:00 — Question 53

Plan for 2 minutes, write for 8–9 minutes, check numbers and comparison for 1 minute.

22:00–47:00 — Question 54

Plan for 3–4 minutes, write for 18–20 minutes, revise for 2–3 minutes.

TOPIK II 쓰기 시험에서는 제한된 시간 안에 여러 유형의 문제를 해결해야 하므로 시간 관리가 매우 중요하다. 특히 54번 문제는 글의 구조와 내용이 모두 필요하기 때문에 충분한 시간이 없으면 좋은 답안을 쓰기 어렵다.
먼저 51번과 52번은 비교적 짧은 문장을 완성하는 문제이므로 너무 많은 시간을 쓰지 말아야 한다. 문맥에 맞는 표현을 빠르게 생각하고, 자연스러운 문장인지 확인한 뒤 다음 문제로 넘어가는 것이 좋다. 53번은 자료의 핵심 내용을 파악한 후 가장 중요한 수치와 변화를 중심으로 써야 한다. 모든 정보를 다 쓰려고 하면 시간이 부족해질 수 있으므로 중요한 내용만 선택해야 한다.

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1. Spending too long on Questions 51–52

These questions matter, but they should not steal time from 53–54. If you cannot make a perfect sentence, write a clear answer and move on.

Pitfall 2. Writing Question 53 like an essay

Question 53 is not an opinion essay. Do not add personal opinions unless the task asks for them. Focus on the data.

Pitfall 3. Starting Question 54 without a plan

If you write immediately, you may repeat ideas, lose structure, or forget part of the prompt. A 3-minute outline can save the whole essay.

Pitfall 4. Using memorized expressions incorrectly

Expressions such as 현대 사회에서, 이에 따라, and 결론적으로 are useful only when they fit the topic. Do not force them into every sentence.

Pitfall 5. Revising too late

If you are still writing new ideas in the final minute, errors will remain. Leave at least 2 minutes for checking.
