💡
TL;DR
  • -(으)ㄴ/는 셈이다 means “it is practically / effectively / as good as …” after judging the result of a situation.
  • TOPIK II reading often uses it to state a 비유적 결론: not literally true, but true enough when evaluated.
  • Read around clues like 사실상, 결국, 거의, 마찬가지로, and contrast words before choosing the answer.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read each Korean example aloud twice: first for meaning, then for rhythm. Pay attention to how 셈이다 comes at the end as a calm judgment or conclusion, not as emotional emphasis.

🔑 The Big Picture

-(으)ㄴ/는 셈이다 is used when the speaker evaluates a situation and concludes that it is practically equivalent to another situation.
It often translates as:
  • “It is practically …”
  • “It amounts to …”
  • “It is as good as …”
  • “You could say that …”
This pattern is common in TOPIK II reading because it helps writers express an indirect conclusion. The sentence may not be literally true, but based on the facts, the result is close enough.
Example:
  • 회의에 참석한 사람이 세 명뿐이었으니 행사가 취소된 셈이다.
    • Only three people attended the meeting, so the event was practically canceled.
  • 매일 한 시간씩 한국어로 뉴스를 읽었으니 독해 연습을 꾸준히 한 셈이다.
    • Since the learner read Korean news for an hour every day, it amounts to consistent reading practice.
In reading passages, this pattern often marks the writer’s final evaluation: “If we look at the facts, this is basically what happened.”

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Form

Use the modifier form before 셈이다.
Base type
Pattern
Example
Action verb, present
-는 셈이다
배우는 셈이다
Action verb, past / completed
-(으)ㄴ 셈이다
배운 셈이다 / 읽은 셈이다
Descriptive verb / adjective
-(으)ㄴ 셈이다
비싼 셈이다 / 빠른 셈이다
Noun + 이다
인 셈이다
성공인 셈이다

2. Meaning: evaluation, not simple fact

Compare:
  • 이 연구는 실패했다.
    • This research failed. direct fact
  • 이 연구는 실패한 셈이다.
    • This research practically failed. evaluation based on the situation
The second sentence leaves room for nuance. Maybe the study produced some data, but the main goal was not achieved.

3. Common clue words

Writers often use these words near -(으)ㄴ/는 셈이다:
  • 사실상: in effect, virtually
  • 결국: in the end
  • 거의: almost
  • 마찬가지로: similarly, just like
  • 결과적으로: as a result
  • 달리 말하면: in other words
Example:
  • 무료라고 하지만 배송비가 너무 비싸서 사실상 값을 내고 사는 셈이다.
    • They say it is free, but because the shipping fee is very expensive, the buyer is practically paying for it.

4. It often summarizes a cause-result chain

TOPIK reading passages may give several facts first, then end with -(으)ㄴ/는 셈이다.
  • 재료비가 오르고 인건비도 증가했다.
  • 그러나 판매 가격은 그대로이다.
  • 따라서 회사의 이익은 줄어든 셈이다.
The key is not only grammar. You must understand what conclusion follows from the facts.

✅ Exam Strategy

Step 1. Identify the judgment

When you see 셈이다, ask: “What is being judged as practically true?”
Example:
  • 봉사 활동을 통해 실제 업무를 경험했으니 취업 준비를 한 셈이다.
    • Judgment: The volunteer work counts as job preparation.

Step 2. Separate literal fact from practical conclusion

The passage may say one thing literally, then use 셈이다 to express a practical result.
  • Literal fact: The person did volunteer work.
  • Practical conclusion: The person prepared for employment.
TOPIK distractors often confuse these two.

Step 3. Check the evidence before the pattern

The reason usually appears before 셈이다.
  • 이미 필요한 자료를 모두 모았으니 보고서의 절반은 끝낸 셈이다.
    • Evidence: all necessary materials have been gathered.
    • Conclusion: half of the report is practically done.

Step 4. Watch the tense

  • -는 셈이다: ongoing/general action or current practical result
  • -(으)ㄴ 셈이다: completed result or adjective/noun evaluation
Example:
  • 매일 조금씩 저축하는 셈이다.
    • The person is practically saving a little every day.
  • 이미 목표 금액의 대부분을 모은 셈이다.
    • The person has practically collected most of the target amount.

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1. Translating it as “plan” or “calculation” every time

can mean “count/calculation” in other contexts, but -(으)ㄴ/는 셈이다 is usually about evaluation.
  • 돈을 셈하다 = count money
  • 성공한 셈이다 = it is practically a success

Pitfall 2. Treating it as 100% literal

셈이다 often means “close enough to say.” Do not overstate it.
  • 행사가 취소된 셈이다.
    • It was practically canceled.
    • It does not always mean there was an official cancellation notice.

Pitfall 3. Ignoring contrast

Sometimes the sentence says the official label is different, but the practical reality is another.
  • 명목상 무료 강좌이지만 교재비가 필수라서 유료 강좌인 셈이다.
    • Officially free, but practically paid.

Pitfall 4. Missing the writer’s stance

This grammar often reveals the writer’s evaluation, criticism, or conclusion.
  • 소비자는 선택권이 있는 것처럼 보이지만 사실상 같은 회사의 제품만 고르는 셈이다.
    • The writer is criticizing limited real choice.

🧠 TOPIK Reading Lens: Why This Pattern Matters

TOPIK II reading often tests whether you can infer the writer’s conclusion from indirect language. -(으)ㄴ/는 셈이다 is a useful signal because it turns facts into an interpretation.
In answer choices, look for the option that expresses:
  1. The same practical result
  1. The same evaluation
  1. The same level of nuance
Avoid choices that are:
  • Too literal
  • Too extreme
  • Only a detail from the passage
  • Opposite to the practical conclusion

📌 Final Takeaway

-(으)ㄴ/는 셈이다 is a conclusion pattern. In TOPIK II reading, do not stop at the surface fact. Ask what the writer is practically saying after weighing the evidence.
A strong reader notices the difference between:
  • what officially happened,
  • what literally happened,
  • and what the situation amounts to.
That final “amounts to” meaning is the heart of -(으)ㄴ/는 셈이다.
