TL;DR
  • -(으)ㄹ 리가 없다 means “there is no reason/possibility that…” and expresses strong disbelief or logical impossibility.
  • In TOPIK II reading, it often helps you identify the writer’s inference, attitude, or the most logical conclusion.
  • Check the evidence before the grammar: this pattern is only correct when the context gives a reason the situation cannot be true.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read the Korean example sentences aloud, especially the contrast between -(으)ㄹ 리가 없다, -(으)ㄴ/는 것 같다, and -(으)ㄹ 수도 있다. The rhythm helps you recognize the pattern quickly in long TOPIK reading passages.

🔑 The Big Picture

-(으)ㄹ 리가 없다 is a high-confidence negative inference pattern. It does not simply mean “I don’t know” or “maybe not.” It means the speaker/writer believes something is impossible or extremely unlikely because there is a clear reason.
  • means “reason,” “logic,” or “possibility.”
  • 없다 means “does not exist.”
  • Together, -(으)ㄹ 리가 없다 means: “There is no logical reason/possibility that this would happen.”
Examples:
  • 민수 씨는 매일 연습했으니 시험에 떨어질 리가 없어요.
    • Minsu practiced every day, so there is no way Minsu failed the exam.
  • 이 가게는 이미 문을 닫았는데 손님이 있을 리가 없어요.
    • The store is already closed, so there can’t be customers inside.
  • 그렇게 신중한 사람이 확인하지 않고 보냈을 리가 없어요.
    • Someone that careful couldn’t have sent it without checking.
For TOPIK II reading, this pattern often appears in passages about judgment, evidence, contradiction, or interpretation of someone’s behavior.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Form

Attach -(으)ㄹ 리가 없다 to a verb or adjective stem.
Stem type
Form
Example
V/A stem ending in vowel or ㄹ
-ㄹ 리가 없다
가다 → 갈 리가 없다
멀다 → 멀 리가 없다
V/A stem ending in consonant
-을 리가 없다
먹다 → 먹을 리가 없다
작다 → 작을 리가 없다
Past inference
-았/었을 리가 없다
잊다 → 잊었을 리가 없다
Noun + 이다
일 리가 없다
거짓말이다 → 거짓말일 리가 없다

2. Meaning: strong negative inference

-(으)ㄹ 리가 없다 usually depends on evidence.
  • 시간이 이렇게 늦었으니 은행이 열려 있을 리가 없다.
    • Evidence: It is too late.
    • Inference: The bank cannot be open.
  • 평소에 약속을 잘 지키는 사람이니 아무 말 없이 안 올 리가 없다.
    • Evidence: The person usually keeps promises.
    • Inference: The person would not fail to come without saying anything.

3. Common TOPIK signal words

Look for words that create logical evidence:
  • 평소에: usually
  • 이미: already
  • 아무리 그래도: even so
  • 분명히: clearly, surely
  • 그렇게 / 이렇게: that/this much
  • 때문에 / -아/어서 / -으니까: because, since
  • 사실을 알았다면: if someone knew the fact
  • 확인도 없이: without even checking

-(으)ㄴ/는 것 같다
Moderate

-(으)ㄹ 수도 있다

✅ Exam Strategy

Step 1: Find the evidence

When you see -(으)ㄹ 리가 없다, ask: What makes the writer so sure?
Example:
  • 그 식당은 예약이 한 달 전부터 꽉 찬다. 오늘 갑자기 가서 자리가 있을 리가 없다.
    • Evidence: Reservations fill up one month in advance.
    • Correct inference: Getting a seat suddenly today is impossible.

Step 2: Identify the writer’s attitude

This grammar often shows:
  • strong disbelief: “No way.”
  • trust in a person: “They would never do that.”
  • logical contradiction: “That cannot be true.”
  • rejection of a claim: “That explanation makes no sense.”

Step 3: Avoid weak answer choices

TOPIK distractors may use softer meanings:
  • “It might be true.”
  • “The writer is uncertain.”
  • “The writer wants to confirm later.”
  • “The writer has no opinion.”
These are usually wrong when -(으)ㄹ 리가 없다 appears with strong evidence.

Step 4: Watch past form

-았/었을 리가 없다 means “there is no way that something happened.”
  • 어제까지 해외에 있었으니 회의에 참석했을 리가 없다.
    • There is no way they attended the meeting, since they were abroad until yesterday.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  1. Do not translate it as simple future negative.
      • 갈 리가 없다 is not just “will not go.”
      • It means “there is no way someone would go.”
  1. Do not use it without evidence.
      • Weak: 잘 모르겠지만 올 리가 없어요.
      • Better: 이미 다른 약속이 있다고 했으니 올 리가 없어요.
  1. Do not confuse 리가 없다 with 필요가 없다.
      • 갈 리가 없다: There is no way someone would go.
      • 갈 필요가 없다: There is no need to go.
  1. Be careful with nouns.
      • Correct: 그 말이 사실일 리가 없다.
      • Incorrect: 그 말이 사실 리가 없다.
  1. Strong tone
    1. In speaking, this can sound very certain or even dismissive. In formal writing and TOPIK reading, it often marks firm reasoning.

✅ Final Review

Before moving on, make sure you can explain these three points:
  • -(으)ㄹ 리가 없다 expresses strong negative inference, not simple uncertainty.
  • The grammar usually depends on clear evidence in the previous sentence or passage.
  • In TOPIK II reading, this pattern often reveals the writer’s conclusion, disbelief, or attitude toward a claim.
