TL;DR
  • -(으)ㄹ 법하다 means something is plausible, reasonable, or likely based on circumstances.
  • It is useful in TOPIK II reading because it often signals an inference: “it would make sense that…”
  • Do not use it for a random guess; there should be evidence or a socially/ logically reasonable basis.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read every Korean example aloud twice: first for meaning, then for rhythm. Pay special attention to the chunk before 법하다, because that is where the inferred action or state appears.

🔑 The Big Picture

-(으)ㄹ 법하다 is an advanced modifier-like grammar pattern used when a speaker judges that something is likely, understandable, or reasonable.
It does not simply mean “maybe.” It means:
  • Given the situation, this result is believable.
  • Given the evidence, this action would be natural.
  • Given common sense, this conclusion is reasonable.

Core meaning

  • V/A-(으)ㄹ 법하다 = it is likely/understandable/reasonable that…
  • V/A-았/었을 법하다 = it would have been likely/understandable/reasonable that…
  • N일 법하다 = it is likely/reasonable to be N

Why it matters for TOPIK II

TOPIK II reading passages often ask you to infer an attitude, reason, consequence, or hidden conclusion. -(으)ㄹ 법하다 helps you recognize when the writer is not stating a fact directly, but making a reasonable inference from context.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Basic form

Use -(으)ㄹ 법하다 after a verb or adjective stem.
Stem type
Form
Example
Meaning
받침 있음
-을 법하다
먹을 법하다
It would be likely/reasonable to eat.
받침 없음
-ㄹ 법하다
가 볼 법하다
It would be reasonable to go and see.
ㄹ 받침
-법하다 after ㄹ
살 법하다
It would be likely/reasonable to live.
Noun
N일 법하다
사실일 법하다
It is likely to be true.

2. Evidence-based likelihood

-(으)ㄹ 법하다 often appears when the speaker notices evidence.
  • 밖이 어두운 걸 보니 곧 비가 올 법하다.
    • Looking at how dark it is outside, it seems likely to rain soon.
  • 그렇게 오래 기다렸다면 화가 날 법하다.
    • If someone waited that long, it is understandable that they would get angry.
  • 가격이 이 정도면 사람들이 관심을 가질 법하다.
    • At this price, people would reasonably be interested.

3. Past inference: -았/었을 법하다

Use this when judging something that probably happened or would have been understandable in the past.
  • 그 소식을 들었다면 많이 놀랐을 법하다.
    • If they heard that news, it would be understandable that they were very surprised.
  • 시간이 늦었으니 이미 집에 갔을 법하다.
    • Since it is late, they have probably already gone home.
  • 준비를 철저히 했으니 결과가 좋았을 법하다.
    • Since preparation was thorough, the result was probably good.

4. Common pairings

-(으)ㄹ 법하다 often appears with expressions that show evidence or reasoning.
  • 상황을 보면 + -(으)ㄹ 법하다
  • 그 정도라면 + -(으)ㄹ 법하다
  • -았/었으니 + -(으)ㄹ 법하다
  • -는 걸 보니 + -(으)ㄹ 법하다
  • 충분히 + -(으)ㄹ 법하다
Examples:
  • 이 정도 설명이면 이해할 법하다.
  • 그런 경험을 했으니 조심할 법하다.
  • 판매량을 보면 인기가 있을 법하다.
  • 하루 종일 일했으니 피곤할 법하다.

✅ Exam Strategy

Strategy 1: Look for the evidence before the grammar

When you see -(으)ㄹ 법하다, ask: What evidence makes this conclusion reasonable?
Example:
  • 젊은 층의 이용률이 계속 증가하고 있다. 따라서 기업들이 이 시장에 관심을 가질 법하다.
    • Evidence: young users are increasing.
    • Inference: companies are likely/reasonably interested in the market.

Strategy 2: Distinguish fact from inference

관심을 가진다 sounds like a direct fact.
관심을 가질 법하다 means the writer judges that interest is likely or understandable.
In TOPIK questions, this can affect the correct answer. The correct choice should preserve the nuance of reasonable possibility, not overstate it as confirmed fact.

Strategy 3: Watch for emotional understanding

This grammar often expresses that a reaction is understandable.
  • 실망할 법하다 = it is understandable to be disappointed
  • 화가 날 법하다 = it is understandable to get angry
  • 부담을 느낄 법하다 = it is understandable to feel burdened
  • 의심할 법하다 = it is reasonable to be suspicious

Strategy 4: Use it in writing carefully

In TOPIK Writing, this pattern can make your argument sound mature when you are explaining a reasonable consequence.
Good:
  • 이러한 변화로 인해 소비자들이 불편을 느낄 법하다.
  • 준비 기간이 짧았기 때문에 문제가 발생했을 법하다.
Avoid using it without evidence:
  • 내일 좋은 일이 생길 법하다.
    • This sounds weak unless you provide a reason.

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Treating it as simple future

갈 법하다 does not simply mean “will go.” It means “it would be plausible/reasonable to go.”
  • 친구가 갈 법하다. = It is likely/reasonable that the friend will go.
  • 친구가 갈 것이다. = The friend will go.

Pitfall 2: Using it for certainty

This pattern is not as strong as 분명히, 확실히, or 틀림없이.
  • 그는 이미 알 법하다. = He probably knows / It would be reasonable that he knows.
  • 그는 분명히 안다. = He definitely knows.

Pitfall 3: Confusing it with -(으)ㄹ 만하다

Both can express reasonableness, but the focus differs.
Pattern
Main focus
Example
-(으)ㄹ 법하다
plausible inference
그 말이 사실일 법하다.
-(으)ㄹ 만하다
worth doing / acceptable degree
이 책은 읽을 만하다.

Pitfall 4: Forgetting past inference

For past situations, use -았/었을 법하다.
  • 지금쯤 도착할 법하다. = They are likely to arrive around now.
  • 이미 도착했을 법하다. = They have likely already arrived.

🧭 Final Review

Use -(으)ㄹ 법하다 when you can answer this question: “What makes this conclusion reasonable?”
Strong TOPIK II reading answers usually keep the same level of certainty as the passage. If the passage says -ㄹ 법하다, avoid answers that are too certain, such as “definitely,” “must,” or “without exception.”
